Are you coming to GS?  We could work out a trade. I have mako I don't use and I'd like j hooks

Unfortunately I am not.

Maybe a load assist bar to load from the side?

Excuse my noobness, are you referring to a hullavator or similar? I love those designs but I definitely can't afford it at the moment.

As the title says, looking for any kind of rack so that I can push my kayak on. I have some J-hooks but my truck sits so tall that its nearly impossible to get my kayak up or down on my own without hurting myself, the truck, or someone else. Any style of rack/holder/pad that would allow me to push my kayak on from the rear would be awesome. I haven't been out in months because I haven't had someone to go with and I'm nervous of damaging something trying to load and unload on my own.

Places to Launch and Camp / Monterey Bay alone?
« on: June 10, 2016, 07:51:05 PM »
Thanks for all the input guys! I'm heading down to Monterey tomorrow, just sticking with the kelp beds near the coastguard pier since that's what I know for now. I'll definitely be hoping to head out to SC or HMB soon as they're considerably closer, but I'm leaving that first trip for a group outting. If any of y'all are on the water and spot a dude on an orange SOT with a gray PFD who looks like he barely knows what he's doing, be sure to come over and say hi!

General Fishing Tips / Re: Newbie question of the day
« on: June 10, 2016, 01:55:55 PM »
I would not recommend bleeding fish off of a kayak, but that's just me & my experiences :smt005.
I like to bonk the fish, cover them with a wet burlap sack or bag, and then get them on ice as soon as possible after landing on the beach.

I'm a bit apprehensive to bleed it out on the water myself... maybe I'm just a worrywart but this sounds like a plan to me.

General Fishing Tips / Newbie question of the day
« on: June 10, 2016, 01:04:28 PM »
Hey guys, thanks so much for all the help this forum has been already! I have another (probably stupid) newbie question for y'all. I know SOP for shore fishing is once you land a fish bonk it, bleed it, and throw it in an ice chest. Since an ice chest isn't readily available for me on the water, anyone have tips for what to do with the fish? Is bleeding it out while you're out on the water okay? All I've caught so far is a rock fish that was so tired by the time it got up that I just threw it in the footwell alive until I got to shore.

Hey guys, I'm still very green kayak fishing. The past two weekends I ended up going out to the kelp beds in Monterey (not planned, we decided last minute to go to Monterey on Memorial day weekend and ended up in Monterey escaping the heat last weekend so we decided to take our kayaks). I've been going with my SO and her father, as he is hoping to get into kayak fishing as well. They have a family event this weekend so I'm left high and dry on things to do and figured why not go for 3 weekends in a row. Am I stupid to be going out alone as a fairly new kayaker? As of last time I felt pretty confident out and about. The only issue I can think of is just carrying the kayak to and from my truck as we normally carry them but I can pick up a cart later this week so that wouldn't be an issue. I'm understandably apprehensive to go out on my own but its a very easy area in my mind. Any tips or things I'm overlooking please send them this way. This is my "am I stupid" checking post before I go do something stupid.

I've towed with 1/2 tons, 3/4 tons, and now have a Tacoma V6 with the tow package (6500# rated) to tow my 3700# dry wt (45-4700#) total wt trailer.

You may already know all this and didn't ask for it, but I'll put it out there,

Maybe it'll help with your truck buying choices.

Of course all IMO,

First, make sure your trailer brakes and controller are in top condition and properly adjusted,
Unless you go 3/4 ton and maybe even then get a load leveling hitch setup,
If it doesn't have a trans cooler, put one in, unless it's a rare manual trans,
Make sure the engine cooling system can handle the excess heat from towing,
Cover all the bases, tires, belts, hoses, (I say this because I used to gloss over some of this stuff)

I recently got a new trailer and weighed everything as I moved stuff from one to the other, just for the GF and I we had about 650# over the dry wt sticker, remember that sticker is "as built" and doesn't include the battery or propane tanks,

I am NOT recommending a Tacoma, but the above is what I did, since the Tacoma I got had a standard suspension (pretty soft) I added air bags and a top of the line brake controller. (already had the load leveling hitch)

Last year we went thru the southwest, starting here going thru Bakersfield, Las Vegas and thru the Utah Canyon Country, I was a little concerned but while dragging that trailer from sea level to over 8000 ft the setup performed flawlessly.

Speaking as another tacoma driver, dear lord I can't imagine your fuel economy. With my rack and kayak on I drop down to 15 mpg highway, and I thought that was bad. Great advice!

I'm late on the welcome party but welcome! I just joined myself. I'm a college student in Boston so I get to enjoy the Boston falls and the California summers! It won't take long for you to be calling 50* cold, trust me

5% towing a 7k lb travel trailer, 95% other.  I understand the limitations of half tons, and am open to a 3/4 ton diesel, just waiting on the right deal to come my way.

Ah in that case, definitely consider an eco boost SCREW F150. You should be able to find plenty around in your price range. I know I did when I was shopping for a truck last year.

Kayaks / Re: Will a 10ft SOT be too small for salt water usage?

She's approx 5'6" ~130lbs if I had to guess.

you really want to eliminate guesswork, no betta time to axe her to step on a scale.  To plozzibly deny its just for your curiosity, blame it on "The NCKA safety committee says so."  :smt004

She may understand that, to fishermen, ounces do count  :smt005

Hahahaha, it's not so much guessing as much as me just not remembering well when she told me before (for snowmobiling purposes, I don't dare ask without a reason). It's 130 +/- 10lbs.

Thanks for all the input guys. I don't know info on the kona aside from what I've been told, but according to her dad it's a convertible tandem/single (it has the attachment points and foot slots to put a seat in the center). It definitely is way more buoyant than she needs.

Would you only be using the truck to tow or also for other applications? If its solely towing you'll have a much happier time driving it if you opted for a 3/4 ton truck. Most modern 1/2 tons will tow 8k, but they won't be remotely as happy while doing it.

Kayaks / Will a 10ft SOT be too small for salt water usage?
« on: June 01, 2016, 01:38:37 PM »
Hey guys, I'm still learning a lot myself but at the same time trying to help my girlfriend. Her and her dad have had kayaks for a while (he has a 14 ft malibu kayak x-factor, she/her mom has a hobie kona convertible). I opted for a 12ft (Tarpon 120) when I was looking due to weight requirements (I'm 6ft 220lbs, not the smallest guy out there), and the size seems to work well for me. Her kona is about 12 ft, but considerably wider than mine and she seems to have a lot of issues with tracking and being blown by the wind. It's bad enough that the few times we've been out together her dad and I are fine while she's miserable and constantly fighting crosswinds. I'm not sure if its just too much kayak for her, or if its just the design that's giving her issues. I've found a couple 10ft models that it seems like she would like, but I worry that they will be too unstable for usage in the ocean. Really any info would be appreciated. She's approx 5'6" ~130lbs if I had to guess.

Welcome to the Madness!  What kayak did you get?

Thanks for the welcomes guys! I got an older generation Wilderness Systems Tarpon 120 off of Craigslist, which came with a Hobie paddle. It may not be much but it gets me out there so I love it.

VHF is a necessity, IMHO...

It's on my shortlist, but my SO's father who I went out with and plan on going out with (he has the mango malibu kayaks x-factor) has one so we aren't completely without.
