General Talk / Cosumnes River heads up
« on: January 23, 2020, 10:29:53 AM »
Was out for a stroll on the CRP yesterday afternoon and observed a sea lion in the river at the mouth of Tihuechemne Slough. That typically means stripers. Low flow in the Cosumnes had the flow reversed with the incoming tide.

Way more people are killed every year by deer than bears (all species), wolves, cougars, coyotes combined.

I am a lot more nervous about m/c ing a twisty high way at twilight than taking a solo stroll through the woods. Before I got to be so damn old I used to love ab diving. in the seventies I used to go with a group that would boat across Tomales Bay, hike over the point and dive near bird rock. Eventually I came to believe that patch of ocean was more dangerous than others and I quit going there but continued to dive else where. Was this rational? probably not, but sometimes you just have to go with your gut.

In searching for an answer to my own question I came across this interesting video.

https://www.nytimes.com/video/science/100000000812441/stephen-herrero-on-black-bear-attacks.html

It pegs the number of fatal black bear attacks at two per year. Fatal cougar attacks are may be a quarter or half as numerous. When you consider that cougars are a lot less numerous than black bears that suggests the cougar is the more dangerous critter.

I don't consider aggression from bears habituated to humans over food to be a serious attack. Once a bear has your food he might fight to keep it.
It is the predatory attack, when a bear stalks you with the intent of eating you that I am considering. Such attacks by black bears are rare but do occur. Both of the mountain lion attacks I am familiar with were apparently predatory. One occurred in the Arc Dome Wilderness in central Nevada and the other on a ranch near Georgetown Ca. Both friends were hunting at the time felt fortunate to be armed at the time as they killed both cats in self defense.  A California Warden told one "any time you can kill a lion with dove loads you had better do it".

Mountain lion and black bear attacks on humans are both rare events. But which is most likely to occur? The statistics available seem to indicate bears, but personal experience says otherwise. in a life time of working and recreating in the woods I have known two friends that have had close encounters with aggressive cats and there have been zero incidents with bears.

I may as well mention that the Sacramento County flood alert system has real time water level sensors for many local water ways. The Point Pleasant Beach-Stone Lakes dashboard has all of the Cosumnes gages. Currently the level at MIchigan Bar is rising and the levels down stream are receding. The sensor at Bensons Ferry (Cosumnes mouth) is malfunctioning as of 2018-03-2011:13 PDT.

Sacflood also has a sensor for Dry Creek (south) which discharges some water into the Cosumnes via Grizzly Slough, which often is dirty long after the river has cleared, at a point that is almost as far as stripers go up the river.

Monitoring the Cosumnes Flows online at two points upstream, Michigan Bar and McConnell (Hwy 99), is help full as is visual inspection of the water condition at Twin Cities Road.

You want to be on the river the first morning the water is fishable because a fresh batch of stripers often moves up into the lower river with each flood event. The water was starting to clear yesterday. I suspect it may be fishable for a brief period before the next storm effects reach the CRP.

General Talk / Re: Need 411 on Lake Eleonor

OK, from the gate it is between 1/4 and 1/3 mile. More that 100 lbs. would be to much for me. If there will be some one to help with the other end of the yak in the steepest sections that will help. Wheelez should be OK.

It is more like 1/4 mile but it is steep. Two wheel drive vehicles can make it up but 4WD would make it more easily. You will need a good set of wheels and high traction shoes. I would recommend a lighter boat. I took a 13 foot Hobie Quest and back packing gear and that was about all the weight I would care to tote in and out.

attack on sea lion or seal that preceded tourist video:

Rocket Shad, white and chartuse. Maybe replace the double hook with a single for snag resistance.

The portion of the Cosumnes River that lies in the CRP is Closed to the take of salmon but is not barbless for other species.
