Introductions / Re: Hello from California's Central Coast
« on: December 13, 2017, 03:39:11 PM »
New member from California's Central Coast.  Been fishing forever, but new to kayak fishing (guess I didn't have enough hobbies...).  Just purchased a new Vibe 130 and am in the slow process of outfitting it, but anxious to get it broken in.  Fishing will mostly be for rockfish, ling cod, and halibut in the Monterey Bay, but plan on checking out north to Santa Cruz areas and south to Morro Bay / Pismo Beach.  Will gladly accept all tips, trade secrets, and especially offers to mentor an old newbie to the sport.  Thanks for reading...happy fishing!!!
Welcome! :smt006 We are from Prunedale and look forward to seeing you out there!

Hi, Time.  Welcome to NCKA...newbie myself.  Live down in the Monterey Bay area.  Just picked up the same Vibe 130 smoke camo yak and am starting the slow process of outfitting it (let's hope Santa is good to me this year...).  Happy fishing.  If you're ever this far south, let me know.

One more silly question. I just filled out my registration form and I see it asks for our NCKA name, no prob but wondering is this a NCKA member only event or open to public or??  :smt102 Wondering because I was telling my BF and Land Mate about the event.

It's open to NCKA Memebrs and their family. If your friends want to join, all they have to do is become a member and create a user name.
Thank you! I will let them know. Looking forward to the event! :smt003

Fish Talk / Re: Hooked something big...maybe?
« on: December 07, 2017, 10:37:26 AM »
"Big tugs" you experienced usually end up being cabezons for me.  Feels like pulling up concrete, with a few runs/tugs that make your rod go bendo.  Probably a ling or cabezon that took your bait back to its hole and broke off at the rocks... or your line needs a better knot/tie next time?
I agree with you, last time I hooked into something that pulled "differently" at SW. At first I thought I had a snag so I kept pulling and reeling trying to break my "snag" loose with out snapping my line only to notice it was coming up little by little but still pulling down "heavy" like I was reeling in a kelp ball. When my kelp ball came to the top it had a face only a fisherwoman could love! :smt007 Awww, a Cabbie!!! Yummm! Smiles:

General Talk / Re: Show me your Crab buoy paint
« on: December 06, 2017, 09:52:02 AM »

Do we need to show anything else on our buoys other than our GO ID#? I think I will try the hot nail method for my #'s.

I added NCKA and my handle "Traildad" plus my cellphone #. That way if I lose it I have a better chance of recovery.
That's a great idea to add your handle. This will be my first season crabbing on my own and not on a charter boat where everything is pretty much done for you so I'm learning. Any advice is greatly appreciated. I'm sure I will have some issues once OTW but that's how I learn, hands on.

There are specialty buoy paints availabile at places like Englund’s which have a cool factor but unless you live near a store which sells it then that’s a PITA. I have found Krylon Fusion to work great, it is even works on plastic. For your CDFW GO ID number the best approach I’ve seen is to burn it in with a soldering iron type wood burner or framing nail held in vice grips and heated by a propane torch and then apply paint to the number via a small brush.  Humboldt Vinylon Bouy paint, there are others. Maybe one of the commercial crabbers here on the forum will improve upon my suggestions. Mine are tricolor yellow, white, and orange with the orange being the only one which shows up worth a s#!t.  :smt003
Does the GO ID gets changed each year or stays same ID number?
