Ive been using a Thule kayak carrier thing on my racks for the last couple years. I like it because it extends the cradles past the stock crossbars. About 5'6" or more cradle to cradle. That's nice because my 525 is pretty long. Problem is that I kinda hate it too. It's noisy and flimsy and my doesn't really fit my kayak well. I recently purchased a new car and was thinking of just using the stock crossbars with cradles. My question is, with the stock crossbars the spread is about 3'6" cradle to cradle. Is that too narrow? Im worried with my 17' kayak that might be too close together and cause flex on bouncy country roads. On a side note, Moo and Eddie, how are you guys liking the Lockracks?

I hate to be a nay sayer and I don't intend for this to be mean or judgemental -- I hope you can take this as constructive, yet firm advice.  Your last two trips showed that you are not experienced enough to do the R2AK trip.  You were literally scared for your life in moderately severe conditions within immediate rescue range.  The R2AK is the opposite of that.  You had very near disaster moments due to poor judgement and lack of seamanship that could result in your death on the R2AK.

Remember that you may be 1-2 days away from rescue when you press your PLB button, if you can get your frozen hands to work.  When you are malnourished and severely dehydrated, you won't have the sense to push the button because your brain will be starved.  When you're not dressed properly and your crack reappears, your survivability in those waters will be measured in hours, not the days it will take to find you and rescue you.

As evidenced in this thread so far, though, you will not heed this advice and you will do this trip anyway.  So, before all else, make sure your family is whole and update your life insurance policy for current needs and costs so that your poor decisions don't financially burden them.

Just my 2 cents.
Mr X, I find your journeys amazing and inspirational, but this is just insane. And foolish. I would really take Tedski's advice. More people on here need to be discouraging you from this journey. You're a total badass and I love following your adventures but I would really hate to see something bad happen to you. Please please listen to what Tedski is saying

General Talk / Re: Paddle vs Pedal vs Sailing Fishing Tactics
« on: May 03, 2023, 05:28:28 PM »
I think I've observed what most folks here use, and have noticed trends in how they tend to use their kayaks. What am I missing here? What are the main reasons y'all chose one kayak over another, and what are your primary fishing techniques?
I have a standard kayak and a pedal drive kayak. I love them both. But.....Ive found myself using my paddling almost exclusively. In fact, I almost never use my Hobie :smt010. One of the main reasons is the simplicity of loading and unloading gear. They are lighter and less components to load. Just paddle, fishing gear and safety gear. I don't even have a seat so way less things to potentially forget. I do favor the pedal drive in freshwater. Perfect for a lazy day on the lake. Just depends on the angler. I got bored with pedal drives and find paddling much more exhilarating......never tried sailing but it looks sweeeet!

The Revo is hands down the fastest non sail yak out there. I love my 2012, but wish I had waited for the 2013 with the Lawrence ducer mount and new seat.  My opinion anyway
I dunno know....... A Stealth 575 might be faster. Especially with an experienced paddler. A 525 is pretty dang fast and a 575 is faster. But I don't have experience with a Revo 16. My 525 is definitely faster than my Revo 13. Just my opinion too
