Craftsmen's Corner / Hack for slipping Ram mounts
« on: September 18, 2015, 05:36:49 PM »
I know a lot of people have Ram ball mounts and if you are like me after a while they start to slip even if you tighten them down all the way.  I hate it when my ff flops down after landing a fish.

I only use them for GPS and Fish Finder but I found a way to tighten them up effectively.  Though temporary, this simple hack is cheap so you can replace it as needed.

Line the balls with one or maybe two layers of thin rubber from the fingers of rubber gloves.  I have nitrile gloves I use for various things and just slip the thumb over the balls and cut off the rest.  You can use two layers if you want but make sure there is no moisture between the two or it can increase slippage.  I used one layer on each ball and had good results for 5 trips before they tore and had to be replaced.  I am sure other types of gloves like latex would work too.  Maybe thicker would be good too.

Fish on!

Just got home and caught up on the reports.

THANKS SO MUCH ERIC!

I had a great time.

4 days in a row fishing Shelter.

Day 1: May 13, arrived about 9 and launched to glass conditions.  Dropped two pots and trolled salmon for six hours for skunk.  Upon checking pots, we found all females and rock crabs.  Repositioned and sent them back for the night.

Day 2: May 14, headed out for Pac Buts.  Went way north then came back to help a friend before I started fishing.  Fished all day, skunk.  On the way in one pot was empty and one had 9 large males.  A few claws and legs missing but dinner!

Day 3: May 15, the lump was up early and the fan came on in the afternoon.  Fishing was decent but challenging.  We got lots of lings an kept some to eat along with a huge black.  One of my crab pots was gone.  We found the buoy and line on the beach with the screw shackle to the harness undone and crab legs on the sand. :smt011 :smt012 :smt013.

Day 4: May 16, Game Day!  I went for lings first but there were two periods in the early morning of sustained gusts.  One from say 6:30 to 7:30 and one about an hour to an hour and a half later.  After that it settled some and the bite picked up before the fan came on again though not as much as Friday.  After I got my two I trolled for salmon for nothing.  My last pot was gone too but Ken found it one the beach.  Not sure if it was blown or walked on the swell or encountered the same skum that hit my first one.  At least I got it back.

Again a great time was had.  I enjoyed meeting and talking to everyone.  Sorry if I forgot or forget your name next time I see you.  There were so many people and my I was not of the clearest mind in the afternoons especially after four days at Shelter.

Thanks to Pat for the floor space.  Shelter was given and I took it!

Pre Shelter distraction anticipation and near incapacity to get any work done.

I am ruined and worthless for anything not related to getting ready for next week.  Fighting through it for one more week.

I do often get quite a few last minute entries, Deva, but this year is looking to be down by several dozen at least.  We may end up at 150 or so.  I'm excited to have it cut down to a more manageable level and to be able to have more time to spend visiting with people.  :smt001

Weird that you feel that way.  I have a friend who I have hardly been able to spend any time with at GS lately even though he is always there.  Love you brother.

Hi Scott great fish and sail this Sat. anyway.

I will join unless the salmon bite is hot somewhere else.  Not sure I will have much left for racing after but if my body is willing, I know a few things about sailboat racing.

11
This whole crazy thing started with a trip in March for Salmon.  Six of us were there the first year.  Last year I finally got mine!

Here we go again.

Thanks Eric for all the good times and keeping this going.

We've come a long way baby!

I will get my stuff in and see you there.
