Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Bluefin Anyone?
« on: October 23, 2023, 09:56:30 PM »
I was working in Shelter Cove today and talked to a guy at the store. The conversation went from mushroom foraging to fishing and he showed me a video of him plucking a 170 pound bluefin four miles West by 3 miles North out of the cove. He said dudes are catching 150-200 class fish regularly from Fort Bragg to the cove. They're on the cooler side in close and just out there crashing bait apparently. Anybody crazy enough to target this from a kayak?

General Fishing Tips / King Salmon Humboldt
« on: June 21, 2023, 09:16:45 PM »
Yo peeps, been a minute  :smt006
So these days I find myself living in King Salmon. I'm fishing and poke pole-ing the fudge outta the rock walls around here for (pretty much) a goose egg. I've scoured our site here and noticed that there used to be a phenomenal perch bite around these parts (the PG&E outflow, wherever that is.) And Clayman got a nice starry once upon a time,  which I'd be very interested to acquire on a regular basis.

What I've noted so far is pretty much Eel Grass or sand flats all around anywhere from 0 - maybe 8 feet; except for the Fields Landing Channel behind Gill's, which drops right off to around 20'. I've fished the channel a couple times with bait and found that a good number of decent sized keeper Dungees are readily available, but I'd like to catch something beyond the occasional sculpin. Anyone have any shareable info that can steer me into perch, flatfish, or anything worth keeping immediately around King Salmon? I'm aware of the great clamming right here and I do well off N and S jetties, but I'd love to go out on a walk with the fam and bring something good home.
Thanks!  :smt006

Recipes / Breakfast Scramble
« on: November 06, 2015, 08:48:26 AM »
I figured I'd post this recipe as it is one of our favorite breakfasts that has to do with fish. I like using Shasta Spots because they are such a clean canvas to work with.

10 boneless fillets (any smaller white fish will work)
5 Tbs olive oil
4 Tbs finely chopped purple onion
1 tsp yellow curry powder
1 good pinch of fresh rosemary
1 roll of Ritz Crackers
1/2 stick of butter
1 dozen eggs
Salt to taste

Put olive oil in large skillet on low. Add fish, onion, curry powder (sprinkled around) and rosemary. Sautee and turn fish until white and falling apart. Add butter and let it melt, turn butter in. Crush Ritz in it's bag, add Ritz, turn in. Beat eggs (add water or milk until it's the consistency you like). Add eggs and turn until the mixture is dry. Add salt to taste.

Eat by itself, with a tortilla or toast. Great for a long day on the water!

General Talk / Amphibia shades

Was wondering if anyone had experience or a review of amphibia sunglasses. They look like they offer a pretty good product and they float. Affordable too.

Fish Talk / Question for biologists or anyone else.
« on: December 10, 2014, 09:53:18 AM »
Hey guys :smt006

I've noticed something considerably different about the spotted bass I've been catching recently at Shasta; They're wormy. I rarely see worms in Shasta bass, I'm assuming it's because the water fluctuates so much that the water quality is very good. I guess that with the lake being so low and very little water entering the lake,  it makes an opportunity for parasites. I have yet to see any muscular worms, it's the occasional gut stuffed full of segmented tapeworms, or as is the case recently with 90% of the bass I've cleaned,  a weird squiggly worm that seems to reside in the fatty deposits attached to the ribs in the belly cavity.

Anyhoo, I was wondering if CADFW has any treatment capability of an issue like this.

On a side note: I was also wondering what kind of an impact the clam die-off due to low water conditions may have on parasitic activity. If I remember correctly,  an adult freshwater clam (little yellow to dark brown guys) bivalve filter 3 gal. In a 24 hour period.  I've noticed that there are 250 yard wide clam beds that are dead and sun baked all around Shasta. This has to have a significant impact. Does CADFW have a clam seeding program at all? I expect it wouldn't take long to get a healthy clam population up and going again.

Thanks
Jesse

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / [HKUP] Shasta Lake
« on: October 31, 2014, 11:44:46 AM »
Hey peeps :smt006

I've had a hankerin to get me some spot fishing in at Shasta and now that deer season is over I'm gonna be gettin it on!

I've been doing a little fishing for trout here and there at centimudi because the shad are on the surface in fairly good numbers. I went yesterday to check it out after the rain we've been getting. The trout were pecking terrestrial wash off the surface and scattered with the stain so I tossed some darker plastics into a runoff trough and caught bass after bass, with no undersize!

I'm thinking that launching at centimudi and working over to the Digger Bay inlet will seriously produce. The ramp is as clear as its gonna get and plenty of parking. Fish were 3'-20', so it should be easy fishing. I'm going to be at it a lot, but if anyone wants to join, I'm pretty open on dates.

Fish Talk / Spotted Bass Proposition
« on: February 11, 2014, 10:51:29 AM »
Hey Guys :smt006

I've been mulling around the idea of talking to CDFW about increasing the bag limit and making a no minimum length, 19" maximum length limit on spots.

From the bit of research I've been doing about fisheries management and biomass, I think that different regulations would enhance our fisheries and bring the quality of spots up.

I know there are professional biologists here. Any comments, pros and cons?

Fish Talk / kayak wars classification of spotted bass
« on: January 22, 2014, 08:17:29 AM »
Was wondering if anyone knew if spots are classed as black bass other, or hybrid bass. I noticed that there is no trophy size for one of them and the trophy size for the other is 28 inches, which is highly improbable.

Doing it again. fishing and water-fowling. launching at the end of the road on the main arm and hanging a right. fishing was stellar last few times. Sorry for the short notice. :smt006

Jesse

Almost forgot: 4pm till dark...

Figured I would throw it out there. Sorry it's such short notice. Going to launch at the point to troll and cast for trout. it's 3pm now, I should be up there by 4pm.

I found myself in the vicinity this morning so I drove in to check it out. First got there and saw not much activity. Then saw a few patches of surface activity. watched the shad start breezing then a fish or two or five would blow up on them. saw some impressive dorsal fins too. by the time I left you could not count one thousand one with out seeing 10 different blow-ups in any given second around the next barely submerged hump off the point. the fish seemed to have the shad balled up against the shoal and are having their way with 'em. Its gonna be a good one this evening.
