General Talk / Re: NOAA letter
« on: February 09, 2014, 09:21:33 AM »
I was approached by a DFG volunteer last December a Marin county lake and asked a series of questions about my experiences fishing. He asked very politely if he could conduct a quick interview and most of the questions were about how much success I was having catching fish.

Based on the questions it seemed they were mostly trying to see if the fish plant program was producing satisfactory results, however it was curious that they asked about my fishing habits outside of just fishing that particular lake. Overall I think the intention of the interview was positive, however as the saying goes 'the road to hell is paved with good intentions'.

Safety First / Re: Understanding surf wind and swell reports
« on: January 27, 2014, 10:03:06 AM »
As a life long surfer one of the things I did as I got older and more into surf and wind forecasting is keeping a journal of sea and weather conditions. I would not only check the buoy readings, tide and wind conditions/forecast before I went to the ocean, but check them when I got home. Combining first account observations for a particular stretch of coastline/body of water along with their corresponding data readings (over time) allowed me to reasonably predict what to expect when planning a go out. It takes time but you will get to know what "kind" of day to expect and plan your activities accordingly. For me wind is the first thing I check, then swell direction and period, then wave height, then tides and temps. Also note weather, particularly fog and seasonal trends
Journal Observations:
Wind direction and speed
Swell period and direction
Wave heights
Weather
Overall summary of surf/fishing conditions

Going out tomorrow morning, picking up my pot thats been soaking since Friday night. Picked up a nice ling and a couple of gopher Rf after I dropped the pot Fri evening hoping for more tomorrow. Rare chance to fish Pt Bonita, reasonable tide and none swell. Still a surf launch but doable, park at the lagoon bridge and launch from the middle of the cove. I'll be there around 7-7:30 or hit me up ch69. Not and area for the faint of heart but and area that doesn't see much pressure either.

Kayak Diving and Spearfishing / Re: Women ab divers and kayakers
« on: November 22, 2013, 12:07:43 PM »
My wife just went out spearfishing for the first time last weekend and is looking for some buddies to dive with. I don't dive (I fished from my yak while she dove), and she doesn't kayak (yet) so she's looking to do more shore dives right now. I know she would be fire up to dive with some other women and she's really keen to give ab diving a try as well as spearfish. Let me know if you want her contact info,

General Fishing Tips / Re: Crabbing in Marin and Sonoma
« on: November 14, 2013, 09:38:04 AM »
If you are going out next week Tues is looking good, no swell and light winds. If its calm enough I may try and drop a pot at Rodeo beach (not recommended) or go out to Bolinas. I agree with AlexB, Muir would be a good choice when it reopens.

Introductions / Re: Pt. Molate Beach Launch and Intro
« on: October 29, 2013, 06:54:30 PM »
I haven't checked out the park yet but plan to. I live in the Richmond area as well and fish Red Rock and Pt. Molate on occasion when conditions are doable. Mickfish is right you need to check the tide and wind carefully before heading out in the shipping channel, and watch for the Vallejo ferry, oil tankers and tugs pulling barges through that stretch. The tankers move a lot faster than you think and the rips have spun me two full rotations before I could power out of them. As for parking I've fished the Brother Islands a lot and never had a problem, and there are park and Chevron security guards that patrol the entire road regularly. I have seen some sketchy characters out there as well so I'm not saying a break in couldn't happen. The perch fishing can get very good in late fall and winter especially when the rubberlips are in. Good luck, and see you out there.

Never fished HMB either but I may need to start a bit earlier having a limited time window. If you all don't see me at the launch I'll be otw on ch69 in the sand colored Search15.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Re: Muir beach access?
« on: September 18, 2013, 05:05:28 PM »
I only launch there when there is no wind and no swell which is about 2-3 days a year. The other day was one of those days, otherwise I would not recommend it to anyone. I've been surfing the break for 25+ years so I'm familiar with how the shore break works and even then I have a hard time getting out without getting soaked. When it is doable though its one of the few place I can go fish on the coast if I only have a couple of hours.  Stinson is always a way better choice.

It is launch-able from the naked beach but you have to get there on back roads unload and drive back to the highway to park, hike in and then reverse order when you get out, very time consuming and not worth the time. The new lot should re-open in November. With the swell down as much as it is you might try Rodeo beach (Cronkite). Park by the lagoon bridge then wheel down to the middle of the cove. It is a surf launch but should be very doable tomorrow. Don't go South around Bird rock, it gets dicey around Pt Bonita. Good luck.

Introductions / Chiming in from Richmond
« on: May 30, 2013, 10:33:54 AM »
Hello All,
I have met a few members in person over the past couple of years I've been Kayak fishing and have appreciated all the good vibes, welcome advice and tips I'v been given. I love fishing the Monterey, SC, SM and Marin coasts but would really like to get my local Bay spots wired. I've been out to Red Rock, South Hampton Shoal and Pt. Molate with limited succes and would appreciate any advice on targeting Halibut in those areas.
See ya out there,
Soleman
