Jackson Kayak / New Jackson Kilroy! Review
« on: January 22, 2014, 07:08:04 PM »
Dan at Headwaters was kind enough to let me demo a Kilroy last Saturday (for free, thanks Dan). Took it out to Lake Berryessa for some trout fishing with my buddy Mike. After paddling it for 5 minutes I tested out its stability and stood up with absolutely no problem. I was able to paddle and cast like I had been fishing out of it for years. I had a Cuda 12 before, which is also pretty stable but the Kilroy was a dream in comparison. My buddy Mike had never been kayak fishing before and after a few hours on my Trident 13, I let him paddle the Kilroy. Not a huge surprise that he didn't want to give me back the Kilroy. He ended up fishing the rest of the day on it the bastard! The way I see it, this might get him closer to the madness and maybe he'll buy one for himself.

So needless to say, I was sold after that trip to Berryessa. Immediately after returning the demo and telling Dan how much I loved it, I picked out a Yellow Jacket color Kilroy still wrapped in the shipping plastic to take home with me. I took this out the very next day to the Port with 2 additional first timers. This time nobody touched the Kilroy but me!

Why I bought a Kilroy:

-Stability, i was able to stand up on it front the very beginning from the low seating position. In the high seating position you don't even need the stand asisst handle to get up! Storage access was easy front, back, and sides. Casting standing up was also very easy.

-Comfort, I already knew how comfy the Jackson seat was from owning a Cuda before. Now Jackson has a lumbar cushion that makes it that much more comfortable. Being able to stand up and stretch on long fishing trips is awesome.

-Storage, Storage, Storage! Storage in the front, rod storage on the inside walls, storage under the seat, behind the seat, pretty much everywhere! The best thing is that you can get to your stored items from the comfort of your seat. No need to side saddle, weird twisting or balancing acts.

-Ready to Fish, comes with two gear tracks in the front and two in the back. That opens a lot of posibilities with rod holders, camera mounts (GoPro mount comes with it) etc, etc. Comes with a Ram 2007 rod holder and a Ram Tube Jr. My favorite feature is hard deck that comes with it. Its a like a dashboard with places to bugee stuff to, removable hook foam for leaders and lures, rod stagers and an opening to insert a full size tackle box into.

-Speed, it kept up with my Trident 13. Even my pal Mike was surprised how fast it was after he raced me to the boat launch in it (I won the race, no big deal).

So far no complaints on this other than weight. Jacksons are heavy but I found that the weight was a little more evenly distributed on this kayak. It didn't feel odd picking it up. Plus it comes with hard handles vs the soft ones my old Cuda had, which makes the weight easy to move around.

Anyway, i hope this helps anyone that is interested in the Kilroy. A good choice for lakes and rivers. I'm keeping my Trident 13 for ocean and anything else. Its an all around good kayak and I still love it.

General Talk / Need a huge favor!
« on: January 18, 2014, 09:05:44 PM »
Taking a couple buddies out to the port tomorrow. I bought a new Kilroy today and now have 3 kayaks. My dilemma is that I have 3 kayaks and only 2 paddles. This was a complete fail on my part and my buddies are already excited about coming up tomorrow. I'd hate to cancel on one of them on such short notice. Is there anyone around the Natomas/West Sac area that could possibly lend me a paddle for tomorrow? I made plans with them for 10am...

Ocean Kayaks / Cheap 1" RamMount ball alternative
« on: January 13, 2014, 03:06:33 PM »
I needed a 1" ball to mount my GoPro on my T13. Didn't have one so I started to look around my garage. I had a couple ball bungees from Harbor Freight lying around and I couldn't help but notice that its very similar in size. I took the bungee cord out and also noticed that there is flat spot in the hollow section (perfect for a screw/washer). I used the same screw that holds the front right battery bag strap to mount the ball to the kayak. The ball was sandwiched between the screw/washer (also had laying around)on top and washer with rubber lining (that was already installed on the kayak) on the bottom. It was a perfect fit with the double socket arm. It holds really tight without having to crank it too hard. I used the bungee cord as a lanyard just in case it ever fails on me. Gonna get a dog bone later on and use this same method to mount another ball on the top of my dry box. I wouldn't use this on anything that is really heavy but for things like cameras it should work just fine. You can get a 4pk of bungees at Harbor Freight for $2.49.  :headbang:

Recipes / Happy thanksgiving! Smoker hack
« on: November 28, 2013, 08:46:50 PM »
So I've been wanting to make one if these puppies for a while now. My problem was that I already have a camp chef. I totally love this thing, it does everything I need except smoking. So I did my version of the mini WSM by just using one of the burners on my camp chef as the heat source. I added a thermometer and a tin can slide vent to the tamale pot lid, drilled holes to the bottom of the pot and boom pow I have a smoker/oven. I didn't smoke anything today but it worked great as an outdoor oven. Kept the temp at a steady 325 F. Our beer can chicken came out great! I plan on adding a grill to it so I can use it as a smoker and painting the outside with an AZ DBacks logo later on. Hope everyone had a great day and had plenty to eat.

For Sale / iPhone 4s w/lifeproof case
« on: October 31, 2013, 02:10:56 AM »
Just upgraded my Att iPhone to the 5s. Wanted to see if anyone would be interested in an iPhone 4S. It's a white 16gb, with minor wear (no cracks), a white lifeproof case, life proof case float case, and lifeproof case clip. This setup was great for fishing, no worries about messing up my phone if it got wet or if I dropped it in the water. Asking $220obo (plus shipping if not in the Sac-Fairfield area) for the whole setup but willing to break it up if the offer is decent. I'll post some pictures when I get off of work.

Update 10/31, the lifeproof stuff has been sold. The phone is still for sale, $160obo

If anyone is in the market for a utility trailer, I just posted one up for sale on craigslist. I'm asking $500 but will sell for $400 for NCKA. I'm wanting to make a camping/kayak trailer out of a harbor freight or similar type trailer. So would consider trades too. Thanks for looking

General Talk / First GoPro Video (non-yak)
« on: September 24, 2013, 02:26:15 PM »
Messing around with the new GoPro Studio 2.0   Its pretty easy to make videos with the templates. Just plug in your videos and the work is done for you.  Had some footage of a work trip to Hawaii. We had some downtime so we rented mopeds and rode around town. Whatcha think?
