And all the Taco Bros dog on my "Fix Or Repair Daily" ... Just sayin' ...

you have it flipped around. for every 148 fords sold 1 will be a lemon claim. for every 2,029 toyotas sold 1 will be a lemon claim

Yikes, was def thinking of this as # of lemon law cases per xx number of units sold....

I actually kinda have to question those numbers though... Ford supplies an immense number of fleet and commercial vehicles.  Which, apparently:

"If a business owns or leases no more than five vehicles, including trucks and vans, the California Lemon Law may apply to those vehicles."
https://www.thelemonfirm.com/2024/03/20/commercial-vehicles/#:~:text=However%2C%20the%20law%20also%20extends,may%20apply%20to%20those%20vehicles.

So ... That isn't the whole set of numbers ...

You might be able to get a thinner, smaller brush size for more detail, but maybe those super detailed lures just catch more fishermen than fish anyway.
I wanna see a photo in the future of fish caught on one of these.

Agreed! I didn't buy anything for the finish material yet, literally just used my kids paintbrush, so not super detailed. I ended up using a toothpick for most of the "details" haha.

Do you fish for Kokanee or landlocked kings?
If you do or are interested in trying I’d bet you can come up with some effective and unique stuff you couldn’t get from any store. I think I’d try making a few 1”-2” spoons. I’ve made some using metal willow blades that have been pretty good for King salmon in Berryessa, Oroville, and Almanor.

Kokanee lures seem to evolve every season, and the strangest stuff can be the hot ticket some years. Maybe print up a super small (like 1”) cut plug style lure, or a variation of the willow blade or apex?

Photos below are of the willow lures I referenced

I've only been Kokanee fishing once - and it was a blast! Kevin (Plug-n-Jug) put me and the kids onto the fish and everyone had a great time. Will definitely be chasing Kokanee again this spring/summer, and will definitely build a few home.made lures to try out.

Nice! I have a couple lure STL's I'd be happy to pass along if you're interested. They'll need some sealing to prevent water from getting in though.

The grey one I made up, white one was adapted to be line-through from a file I found online. It's been a while since I've printed those but I don't think either need supports.

Those look great, would love to give them a try! I've just been playing with what I can find on Thingiverse and a couple other sites.

Trying a couple small crank baits too. My painting experiment, haha.

Ooo, so many good ideas!

Something else I'm gonna try. A small inline bait holder, just to get something smelly in the water without needing to bother scenting the lure itself. Will probably put on the line ahead of my flasher or maybe on the main before my leader.

Anchovy paste would work well on this  :smt002

Good call, will have to try that.

If you cut a the top off at a 45 degree diagonal, your reel will rotate when dropped in to face the direction of the cut.

I never thought to cut those at an angle. Gonna have to do that now!

Which brand/model do you guys have?  I was gifted this Ender 3D printer and this will be one of my Winter projects too.

Ours is an older Flashforge Finder hand me down. Works great for smaller stuff, but as we start wanting to print larger things, we will probably buy an Ender like yours. I think the Ender is probably the sweet spot for hobby printers - fast, good quality prints, can print larger items, and is reasonably priced for it's capabilities.

Top three colors IMHO are Orange, Firetiger Green/Yellow, and Shad black and white.  I'd love to try painting lures, it sounds like so much fun!

I was definitely thinking fire tiger and black and white/silver. I don't think I've use orange in CA yet.  I remember the orange body chrome blade rooster tails working pretty well in OR as a kid.

Full pictures of my cockpit for freshwater. Basic milk crate, no lid, three ABS pipe rod holders zip-tied on. I used ABS because it is more UV stable than PVC, and I had the right size on hand.

I also use a Trader Joe's insulated shopping bag for my freshwater fish bag. It fits perfectly between my seat and the milk crate, is large enough for a limit of nice sized trout with frozen water bottles to keep everything cool. I installed some grommets on the bottom for drainage, and on the back at the top for the bungees to hold it right to my seat back.

For saltwater, I only carry a large fish bag behind the seat, and minimal gear under the seat. If crabbing, I throw the crab hoops right on top of the rear well, and will usually bungee a 3 gallon bucket to the bow to hold crabs.  The rear well is sized perfectly to place the hoops on top, then use a gaff and net or rod though the hoops and into the flush mount rod holders. Everything stays in place perfectly.

For rod holders, I have 4 flush mount, three on the milk crate, and one Scotty on the rail. For freshwater I use the Scotty rod holder in the picture, for saltwater I use the rocket launcher type.  I make sure that any nets or gaffs I buy can fit into the flush mount holders, just to keep them accessible but out of the way. I am considering another ABS rod holder forward near the pedal drive to hold a rod while I unhook a fish - probably using the track mount to hold it in place.

I have the Scotty holder and fish finder mounted on the left side, to keep the right side clear for landing fish. That grey box on the bow houses my fish finder battery, with an SAE connector for easy removal for charging.  My charger has that same connector too. A little dialectic grease and I've never had a corrosion problem.

For trolling, I use the flush mount rod holders and the Scotty mount.  I would say 75% of my fishing is trolling, 20% jigging for rockfish/ling cod, and 5% casting lures.

I am always trying out new/different things as far as cockpit layout, but this configuration works really well for me.

Jointed swim baits. Again, wasn't thrilled with the action. They feel pretty sturdy, I think definitely tough enough for bass and trout. Probably not for striper, haha.

nice, which filament are you using?

The printer itself is an older Flashforge Finder that needed some repair.  I replaced the hot end and powercord, and after some trial and error, it prints pretty well.  I'm using Sunlu PLA - it's cheap and gives me pretty clean prints.  This stuff is surprisingly durable too.  So far I have yellow, black, grey, white, and translucent blue... We've made some cool stuff for the kids and their friends.  I made a couple jointed swimbait things too, but I wasn't happy with the action, so those are gonna become keychains, haha.

Fun!  How do you paint em'?  Nail polish?  Layers of air brush?  I would think salmon lure type colors fo' da ocean.   :smt006

I actually haven't painted any lures yet, but acrylic paint sticks very well to the material.  My wife and kids are pretty artistic, so we have a ton of paints around the house.  For the first few, I will probably just hand paint them.  If I find a winning design, I might get an airbrush setup.  I've never used one of those before, so would definitely need to learn some new skills there.  I've not targeted salmon in the ocean here - but I imagine watermelon, silver, and mack colorations would probably be cool for saltwater ...

Bottom line up front - what color should I paint 3d printed trout lures? What other lures should I be printing?

So, I was gifted a 3d printer a few months ago, and have been learning the ins and outs of printing various shapes with the basic PLA plastic filament. I am at a point where the kids have printed the fun bendy toys and whatnot, and finally have some time to print stuff for myself. So, of course, first thought went to finding some lure designs online to print.

I've found a few lures that look "trout-y" enough, even though they are mostly scaled down salmon lures.

I started with two Tomic style plugs, and one flatfish type that seems similar to a Brads Cut Plug - mostly because I was looking for somewhat popular designs that I could run the line through without needing to epoxy loops or wire into the body.

I can scale these up or down, but I think 2-3" is a good starting size for these type lures. The flatfish one is a out 2.5" and the plugs are about 3". One plug is set for a 45 degree line lay, and the other for 30 degrees.

What colors should I paint them first?  They are two colors now because my kids wanted to use yellow for a different project, and I was too lazy to switch back to grey or black, haha.

I'm kinda thinking one black and silver, one white and chartreuse, and maybe one fire tiger?

There are a ton of crank bait models available out there, and a handful of other trolling types lures too - anyone else 3d print lures for trout, or other species? Seems like this could be either really cool, or a giant waste of my time....
