General Talk / Re: Anyone fish in a tandem?
« on: July 25, 2024, 03:12:10 PM »
While we are on the topic of old Hobie pedal drives - how many different shape drive wells are there? I'm fairly certain the old gen 1 drive wells are different than the GT, which is different than the 360? Do the kick up drives have a different well than the non-kick up? Just trying gauge cross-compatibility from one to the other.

By my count it is either two, or maybe up to eight.

If you don't need it to be stretchy, you could form a piece of kydex to the shape you want and then just mount in place with the screws around the frame. Could cut holes in it to suit your needs, either for sticking things or just for visibility/drainage.

Or, could also weave some thin bungee cord into a pocket type thing.

That looks tasty.
For California catfish, I'm assuming the large ones and particularly the large ones from Clear Lake and maybe from Berryessa would not be desired.
Where would one target the cleanest catfish for eating? I'm thinking targeting fish in the 18"-24" size would be the way to go.

I'd probably go with fish from a stocked lake, like one of the EBRPD lakes. I'd like to learn how to target catfish - have only caught them from shore as incidental catch while striper fishing in the delta.

Dang, that looks tasty! I've only had catfish breaded and fried. If I ever catch one, gonna have to give that a try - looks really yummy!

I fished a Perception Tribe 13.5 tandem for about 2 years before getting a solo pedal kayak. I still take the kids out once in a while on the big tandem. Works great, even for a kayak that isn't even really a fishing kayak. It paddles great, and running solo I have tons of deck space.  I'm considering making some upgrades and using that kayak for salt water.

With a kid on board, I usually just paddle and let my passenger fish. That way I can keep us in the right spot while they focus on fishing.

Used paddle tandems are easy to find for cheap, and pretty much all of them can be used solo.  Also, rental places usually have some used kayaks for sale. A lot of them would discount the rental price off a purchase, if you wanna try it out before you buy.

This seems like an enforcement nightmare, as I suspected it would.  The law is vague to allow officer interpretation, and leeway in the court if it comes to it.

I'd much rather a black and white law. Have a specific device, rigged a certain way, used in a certain manner, and stored in a certain state so as to be 100% clear it meets the requirement. Anything else just turns into a shit show and uncertainty.

For the record, I also do not keep it rigged on a pole. I carry two poles all the time, but usually rigged with different baits/lures. Just a snap swivel away from rigging my descending device, and I keep it on deck and ready.

I have not been checked yet - only been out for rockfish twice this season.

I don't think lights are required unless you operate at night.... That should not hold up the registration process for a kayak.

General Talk / Re: canning tuna?
« on: July 17, 2024, 06:09:11 PM »
I don't have the time or equipment to get into canning right now, but my grandmother used to can albacore pretty regularly when I was kid.  She would buy two or three fish from the boat on the dock, and can same day.  House stunk pretty bad for a few days after, but her tuna was the gold standard for sure.  Spoiled me on canned fish, haha.  I think she did a mix of water, olive oil, salt, and a couple peppercorns in each jar, but it was a long time ago and I was pretty young the last time I helped.

Good luck!

That looks very similar to my Pelican branded drive. How long is your kayak?

You can loosen the drive cables a 1/4 turn or so and they will get easier to pedal, but won't necessarily make you go any faster unless you pedal faster.

CA Regulations / Re: Fishing on a SUP question
« on: July 10, 2024, 08:33:37 PM »
Not sure I would bother with registering a SUP.  Depends on where you take it too, I guess.  Maybe ask local Sheriff Office?  They run most of the marine divisions, incl lakes and small water.

One of my friends just bought a couple inflatable SUPs - hoping to show him some nearshore spots to get on some fish.  Should be fun!

Haha, you know that hillside well! Was a good day yesterday, nice to get a break from the East Bay heat.
