Dang Joe, that's a bummer. It's been pretty hot the last couple weeks, must be messing with the bite.

Interesting video - gonna have to introduce small grubs into my trout arsenal.  I've seen him talk about those hooks before too, might have to find some of those.

So if I wanted to, I could tie a shrimp fly and a jig w treble hook underneath.

I do this sometimes.  I tie a dropper loop in the middle of a 4' or so piece of 40lb mono.  Double surgeon's loop at the top to connect to my main line swivel, the fly on the dropper loop, and then a snap swivel at the bottom to connect a jig.  Could also put a hoochie or a hook for bait on the dropper loop.  Any single hook jig works for the bottom - heavy jigheads for swimbaits, diamond jig, or other vertical jigs.

In the first 20 seconds I believe he says that "he droned out his bait" meaning deployed it with a drone, right?

“Under current law, using drones for hunting or fishing is illegal, ” said Chief Henry Gonzales Jr. of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.”

Does the law specify bait delivery or sight fishing? Is it meant to cover both? I've seen guys on the rocks at Pacifica using drones for bait delivery.

My view, go out there, take what you need, not what you can - enjoy a special meal, leave many fishies behind.

This. I'm happy if I come home with a story and enough fish for one good fresh meal. If I have more than my family can eat, I invite friends.

Good luck tomorrow Joe!  Wish my schedule allowed a big day tomorrow, or I would join you. I have all day Wednesday, but the weather looks less than optimal...

Those are pretty sweet.  Have you considered making them a little shorter or longer?  Could be a good way to help adjust travel for longer/shorter legs, or to really refine how much leverage and fin stroke per/inch of pedal travel.

It's funny you mention that, as I've made a bunch of longer ones, up to 2" (maybe even 2.5") longer. There is probably an old thread here about that topic.

Why longer? Years ago, I owned a couple of recumbent bikes, and the consensus then seemed to be that for maximum power on a recumbent, you wanted the seat laid way back and the pedals up higher than you'd expect. So, my thought was that longer pedals would get my feet up higher and might result in more power/less effort. I found that about 1 inch longer seemed best, but on my AI, longer is more trouble, as the ropes are routed near the pedals. Recently, I raised the seat on my (pre-2015, pre-vantage seat) AI, and now I actually find that standard length (13 inches) is better than longer. I never considered shorter crank arms, as my heels would drag on the kayak if the cranks were any shorter.

Anyways, my conclusion is that there is probably no universal "best" length, or even a simple formula that will tell a person what is best for them. The only way to find out would be to experiment.

Btw, if anyone wants to experiment with shorter cranks, LMK as I have a few pairs around that I'm not using, and shortening them is easy.

That's kinda funny - I was thinking a shorter arm would be better for me.  I have relatively short legs for my height, and often wished the stroke length from front to back was a little shorter. I might have to fab up a couple arms for my drive.

I use SPD mountain bike pedals and clip in with mountain bike sandals with cleats.

This is a fantastic idea - I even have a spare set of pedals, haha.

Any issues with saltwater vs pedals?

Craftsmen's Corner / Re: Super rusted nuts on my Hobie 18 rudder
« on: September 22, 2024, 10:58:14 AM »
I cant get it un-done with brute force, the nut's metal just gives way.  Seems like I need to cut or drill it, but not sure how that can be done really.  They are recessed a little bit in the rudder housing, so I dont think I can get a flat cut in with a hack saw. They do still turn though, so maybe drilling the center out would work?  Probably take forever though without a drill press.

What do you have for cutting tools?  I would try a vertical cut, getting as close as you can without hitting the surrounding surface.  Would take a while with a hacksaw, but you should be able to remove enough material to just break what remains of the nut in half.  Those stainless bolts probably won't be fun to cut by hand either.

Hey Troy, Benicia isn't quite the delta, but I do like it for stripers in these transition seasons. They move through and stage there, so when it is good there, it is really good.

Sherman Island is an easy first time delta excursion. Launch at the ramp or on the beach, there is a large flat area, some islands with deep channels nearby, and easy access to the main Sacramento River. Little current inside the "lake" portion, and lots of room to move around and find fish. Drift with bait, anchor with bait, troll, whatever you wanna do in that area. I have had best luck trolling the shallows near the channel edges, or anchoring and tossing bait at the channel edge.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Favorite Crab Hoops?
« on: September 20, 2024, 10:27:15 PM »
I need to get some new gear before the season starts up, and wanted to ask for recs. I've been pretty satisfied with the heavier weight KUFA traps, but anybody have a strong preference for Promar Ambush or Danielson? Seems like the Ambush would have to be seriously better to justify the hassle of not collapsing...

Definitely interested in heavier rings as I've had problems with walking traps in the past.

I use the standard Promar collapsible hoop nets and they work fine for me. I also don't crab in Tomales very often, so current isn't much of a problem.

Also, PB Blaster is your friend if you really want to get it apart without ruining the bolt.
