Safety First / Re: Personal Locater Beacons (PLBs)
« on: July 12, 2019, 03:39:23 PM »
...I recently just got the Standard Horizon HX890 which has a distress feature on there. I lift up the cover and hit the button which should send out a distress signal

That's a VHF device, so still line-of-sight, just like your radio. Maybe helpful in some cases, but not really comparable to a PLB...

Yeah but coast guard antennas are pretty high, you will lose vhf with nearby boats before you lose signal with CG. Line of sight with CG antennas will still be there , it's just a matter of the power of radio transmit at that point. (Receiving takes less power)

Remember to register your DSC radio device, otherwise it won't work.

EPIRP.  $300-$500 and don't accidentally get it wet.  :smt044 :smt044 :smt044 :smt044 :smt044 :smt044 :smt044

I don't have one but I try to carry two radios for redundancy

Fishing Pics / Re: Catching report!

Santa Cruz. I don't think this was within the last day or two since it looks overcast in the picture, and the sun has been shining hot these past couple days. Also, no motor so they were close to harbor.  But thanks for posting! Always like looking at fish pics.

I think harken makes a lot of Hobie hardware? Only the best. Expensive, but maintaining a Hobie is still WAAAAY cheaper than boat

I was very close.  I hope you feel better. Thank you for the very generous offer

I'm also interested, can you send some details? I have passport ready!

I'd probably confirm with a dealer that's the part, but I'm pretty sure

81450001 CHEEK BLOCK - HOBIE

https://westcoastsailing.net/hobie-kayak-cheek-block/

My other ones were ok, but yeah wouldn't hurt to replace all

The same thing happened to me!!!  Mine wore out in the same place yours did.  The kayak connection in SC ordered a replacement for me.  I'll see if I can find a receipt with part number.

Also, make sure your lines aren't twisted in the back.  Sometimes they twist and then you need to use more force to get the rudder up which then wears out the pulley you are replacing...

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: 3rd rod and reel ideas
« on: June 25, 2019, 12:03:21 PM »
I bought a penn squall about 3-4 years ago, didn't even last one season on the kayak.  I had to send it back for warranty repair.  I got it back and now I have to take it apart every year to clean it.  Salt water intrusion.  If you go with penn I would stay away from squall and do at least their fathom line.  I have three fathoms, 2 lever drags and a levelwind for 2 years now with no problem.  I've had them apart and no signs of saltwater inside.  I agree with having a dedicated trolling rod for salmon.  I have 2 penn levelwinds dedicated to trolling with a fast action light rods for salmon and 2 heavier rods with lever drag or level winds for bottom fishing.  But I have a tandem and typically always have 2 people so I need 4 rods.
I'm sure lots of people will chime in, but yes, you should have at least 2-3 setups for kayak fishing out here!  It's more that salmon fishing requires light rod, fast action, which isn't the greatest for deep dropping 8oz of weight for jigging halibut/lingcod/rockfish.
