Places to Launch and Camp / Re: Tomales Bay launch on west side?
« on: June 11, 2018, 09:41:13 PM »
It’s a -2 tide this weekend if you want to dig for clams too. It’s an early one Friday or Saturday in front of Lawson’s launch. Good luck on the butts!

Thanks for the tip yatzmail. Grilled butts' and clam chowder would be icing on the cake!

Watch out for the clam chowder. There has been a PSP warning on bivalves for several months now. Someone got sick from eating mussels from Dillon beach. Hope it gets lifted soon.

Check out the Daiwa emcast series. Pretty nice quality for the price.

Outdoor pro shop has them.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Recommended Landing Net for Halibut
« on: April 21, 2018, 02:48:54 PM »
Use a gaff.

X10

Gaff is sooo much better for halibut. Gaff them in the belly side right below their gills and they will freeze up allowing you to get them on the clip and administer the wood shampoo. Also much less likely to snag your hook and lose them this way.

I like a net for salmon but pretty much anything else gets the gaff.

General Talk / Re: Berkley live bait

Sharky took the picture. Thanks Sharky! We caught many halibut and rockfish/lingcod with the same bait. The WSB was just bycatch I was actually fishing for lings.

Nothing beats the lively’s! 😀

Live chovies from K dock with 5 gallon bucket and an aerator got me a #50 WSB at Muir beach almost ten years ago. Tsuri and Sharky were there too.

Like Rockhopper said don’t overload your container. Stop and skim off the dead/weak ones for later use as fresh dead or frozen. You should still end up with plenty of lively for the yak. Must have a good bait tank on the boat that recirculates the water. Tubes and caddy’s don’t work in the water.

I mostly catch my own fresh bait now with a sabiki or cast net now but if I lived in the east bay still I’d hit up K dock. Great deal for good bait especially when compared to the cost of tray bait.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Proper hook size for stripers and halibut
« on: April 12, 2018, 12:32:13 AM »
A good all purpose hook for halibut and stripper fishing with live bait are the owner mosquito hooks. They are designed for freshwater so they don’t last long in the salt but I like them a lot for anchovies and shiners. Thin wire means longer lasting bait and they are plenty strong for any strippers or halibut if your drag isn’t too tight.

For bigger baits like sardines, mackerel or large smelt I will use an owner or gamakatsu octopus hook and a small treble stinger.

Match your hook size to the bait you are using but I will use a #1 mosquito for small anchovies, a 2/0 mosquito for large anchovies and shiner perch on up to a 3/0-5/0 for a large mackerel.

You can set with octopus hooks but it’s good to let the halibut eat a little before you do and don’t yank too hard even then. It’s easy to rip a bait out of their mouths and end up with nothing but a story and a raked bait.

You should plan to spend some time in big sur on your way down. Plasket Creek has Good camping, surfing and fishing. Lime kiln and Kirk Creek are nice also but no surf break.

Hope you guys have a great trip!

Nice try out there KPD. I hear you on the Jellyfish that’s not a mistake you are likely to make twice. 😄

They sting the eyes too FYI.
