Safety First / Re: Bean Hollow Rent Due

can you post pix of the kayak?

I recovered the kayak, it is intact. Still trying to locate the owner for the return. The bite is at mid section. The IDD (distance between teeth) is about 50mm. The Bite diameter (width) is about 13 inches.

If you know who the person is, let me know.

thanks

Pics are toward the bottom of this thread: http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=101051.msg1132035

Another point to consider: We have a thorough network of MPAs, which were controversial and removed some of the best fishing areas as no-take zones. So in theory these relatively non-migratory species are already protected from an extinction threat. So a closure of all areas is completely unnecessary. The MPAs should guarantee that we will always have stocks of fish and bag limits can be adjusted up and down but not eliminated.

This is a great point and I haven't seen anyone bring it up. And with the 30x30 initiative, the amount of water covered by MPAs is going to more thatn double. If the quillbacks are going anywhere, it's not going to be because of fishing.

Thanks Paul! Completed.

This would be like close the hunting season in California because they are unable to find Polar Bear in the wild.

Yes, while also claiming hunters already shot too many polar bears in California this season already. It doesn't make any sense.

General Talk / Re: Descended fish mortality rates
« on: August 28, 2023, 07:56:11 PM »
I have a very nice, very $$$ descender, it is important to me.  But i've always wondered....does a Ling just gobble them up?  they're targets for the whole ride down...and possibly a bit dazed and confused when they get back down.

Which one? I bought a nice ($$$) one without looking at the details, and then got around to reading the instructions and found the shallowest depth setting is 100', and I'm almost always fishing more shallow than that, so I went back to the bounce ball.

I'm not going to lay down money for a new one until I see an open nearshore season though. I won't be surprised if nearshore rockfish goes the way of the abalone.

If you can't deploy lines in the water within the restriction zone, how do you fish for halibut, salmon, threshers or anything else?

"During the ‘offshore only’ fishery, fishing gear shall not be deployed shoreward of the 50-fathom RCA boundary line when shelf rockfish, slope rockfish or lingcod are possessed onboard the vessel..."

As long as you aren't in possession of rockfish or lingcod, you can fish shoreward of the 50 fathom line.

How does stopping me from fishing this whole season (haven't been out yet) help the quillback?

There are plenty of other fish near shore besides rockfish and lings.  The flatfish are better eating imo which includes sand sole, rock sole, California halibut, sand dabs and starry flounder.  There are a few kinds of perch, striper and White Sea bass too.  If I lived near the Bay Area, I would be targeting White Sea bass cause they rarely show up north.  Also there is sturgeon until they tighten the regs some more on those as well.  Also it’s thresher shark season which is plenty of meat for your catch and a blast to catch as well.  It will only improve your catch rate in general if you adapt and learn to target other fish.  Rockfish and lings are some of the easiest to catch fish which makes it not much of a sport or challenge.

A very reasonable and sensible attitude, and I'd be a lot more open to adopting that attitude if no-take and a descender mandate had been tried, and had failed.

On the bright side, we get to have winter threads year-round now.

12. RIP Rittenburg Bank

13. Powerboats are going to burn a shit-ton more fuel motoring out to the deepwater reefs.

guess I'm glad I kept my surf fishing gear :smt011

Finally feeling motivated to learn Frenzel equalization.

Fish Talk / Re: Rockfish ID Guides & Limit
« on: August 21, 2023, 09:20:22 PM »
While I was rockfishing at FR, there were so many radio calls asking about rockfish identification and limits.
You can download the following Printable Fish ID Guides from this site: https://wildlife.ca.gov/Fishing/Ocean/Fish-ID
I downloaded these files to my phone and carry with me fishing.

  • Nearshore Rockfish of California (PDF)(opens in new tab)
Yelloweye Rockfish, Vermilion Rockfish, and Canary Rockfish ID (PDF)(opens in new tab)
Yellowtail Rockfish, Olive Rockfish, and Widow Rockfish ID (PDF)(opens in new tab)
Copper Rockfish, Gopher Rockfish, and Canary Rockfish ID (PDF)(opens in new tab)
Quillback Rockfish, China Rockfish, and Black-and-Yellow Rockfish ID (PDF)

28.55.(b) Rockfish Limit: Ten, within the Rockfish, Cabezon, and Greenling complex (RCG complex, as
defined in Section 1.91) limit of 10 fish, in any combination of species, except as provided
below.
(1) The limit on bronzespotted rockfish, cowcod, and yelloweye rockfish is zero. These
species shall not be taken or possessed as part of the RCG limit.
(2) The limit on vermilion rockfish is four fish, within the RCG bag limit.
(3) The limit on quillback rockfish is zero fish, within the RCG bag limit.
(4) The limit on copper rockfish is one fish, within the RCG bag limit.

Paul

I heard all that. If you have to ask, it's all no take. You should be at home studying the regulations instead of fishing. Of course it's all moot after September 1.

Very odd moves without data...I told ya', they'd rather have us not fish at all in the long run...

That is exactly what they want, and that is exactly what we are going to get.

Coming soon to a GMA near you.

Surprise, surprise.

Got my baits, thanks, and thanks for the freebies! :smt006

Now if the wind would just chill out for a bit. I may have to make the drive down to SC to bonk some lings with these.

Nice report, thanks for sharing! Looks like you landed at Point Loma, a Navy submarine base. Yeah, they probably aren't keen on unexpected visitors showing up on the beach.
