General Talk / Re: Bitcoin
« on: September 09, 2017, 09:32:51 PM »
It was a good 6 or so years ago that I first really got into bitcoin. I had a pretty decent gaming computer that wasn't being used much and since my electric bill was being paid by my landlord I found it fit to run it 24/7 as a mining rig. After a good 3 or 4 months of it running non stop I had managed to mine ~3.5 bitcoins! Cool I thought, that just made mined me about $25 worth of bitcoin, ultimately the value wasn't going up at the time and since I moved out of the sweet free energy situation I decided to stop mining all together. I didn't think much about those bitcoins and help them in a secure bitcoin wallet stored offline on a hard drive... Fast forward to July of 2016 and I read somewhere on the web that bitcoins were selling/trading at ~$650/bitcoin!!! Score!! With the volatility of the market I figured it can't possibly go up too much from there and with the upcoming election who knows what could happen???? So, I sold my bitcoins and pocketed a cool ~$2100 cash and put it towards fishing gear and a small vacation, overall not too shabby for a few months of computing power... Then I saw this thread and checked the current value....  :smt021 fantastic.

Anyone able to post up any thoughts on these guys and pictures? Looking at buying a few for me and friends but wanted to read some feedback... The yak attack one doesn't work well for me.

General Talk / Re: Getting stuff Stolen
« on: May 24, 2017, 07:46:26 AM »
I have direct experience with the trackr device and I would not count on it to help you recover lost/stolen things unless they're stolen and still inside your own home  :smt001

Some issues I have seen with the device:
- Has trouble "finding" things more than about 25ft away, 100 is a pipe dream, maybe on a flat field if both items are outside and within line of sight.
- The android app is trash, this may not mean much to you if you use an iphone, but the big selling point of this device is that there's a network of "millions" of people out there with the app. With the android one being so badly written  you can't count on android users even keeping the thing installed.
-On the same android app they haven't figured out how to keep the app "alive" without burning your battery, so they've flip flopped between having an app that is killed by androids battery saver features, and an app that burns through your phone battery. Either way it's not a good thing.
-If bluetooth is off on the phone then it won't work (crowd search feature.)
-Try and find first hand accounts of people having things stolen and getting them recovered as a result of having this device. For 4.5 million (according to them) of these things out there, it's sure hard to find stories like that.

The device is neat and if you lose your keys or wallet a lot then it may work well for that, I just wouldn't count on it for recovering a lost item.

If it's a big one I net, boga grip (tethered to yak) then bonk, big game clip, and bleed. Fortunately (now I am jinxing it) haven't lost a good one yet.

General Fishing Tips / Re: That Ned Rig
« on: April 06, 2017, 09:18:00 AM »
The ned rig is a killer and flat out catches fish, not necessarily big fish, but catches fish!! I fished it almost exclusively at a tourney up here when the bite was tough and was able to catch a limit and 3rd place out of a field of 34 anglers! The biggest thing I can say is to fish it painfully slow, if you have a two rod license it can even pay off to throw it out while casting other lures and you'll be surprised how many fish you catch with it just sitting there doing nothing. This last weekend I even caught a rainbow on one while bass fishing.

Although after some searching and getting the correct name of the shop we found a phone number so fingers crossed.

Shannon,
Whole paycheck and new seasons both carry a pretty decent selection of vegan (lactose free) chocolate bars. If you'd like me to snag you a couple different kinds let me know.

General Talk / Re: Any cord cutters here?
« on: March 21, 2017, 03:39:48 PM »
I sort of went backwards and went from cord-cutter to having cable, but that's only because it was actually cheaper to get cable than it was to get just internet... Makes no sense, but it does... Regardless 95% of the media we consume is on our Home theater PC, you could use an android tv box as well as is mentioned.

A few things to keep in mind...

Live sports will be tough... The MLB package is the best, and if you're a Giants or A's fan you can very easily get around the in market blackout by using a service called adfreetime: https://adfreetime.com/ for $2 you can watch any game, as well as consume netflix content from outside the US if you want. Football is more difficult, although if you're niners or raiders fan then you can almost always get those games locally... Basketball has a similar package to MLB and adfreetime should work for it as well.

Within the Kodi app (can be put on any PC, MAC, or Android Phone/tablet/device) you can download the Exodus addon which gives you access to essentially every somewhat major tv show and movie known to man... With this you can stream Game of thrones in HD before it is live on the west coast... It's seriously good stuff!! I would recommend installing kodi and exodus and giving it a shot for a little while prior to cutting the cord.

General Talk / Re: Tenant v Landlord (Sold the house)
« on: February 21, 2017, 10:39:07 AM »
Full disclosure: I live in Oregon now, but lived in the bay area for a bit in my college years.

Your lease (if not month to month) is valid with the new owner and they are obligated to uphold the lease legally. If you're on month to month lease then it's a bit of a different story unfortunately. Do you live in the city itself? It looks like there's legal limits to how much your rent can be raised on a yearly basis. Most nearby cities likely have laws in place for rent increases... I would check it out.

NCKA's loss is NWKA's gain. As someone who loved reading his reports here I am excited to read them on NWKA about our fisheries up here.

Awesome story!! It's easy to be cynical when it comes to things like this, but it's a good reminder that a good majority of the people working in these fields really care about what they're doing and the fish.

Craftsmen's Corner / Re: Seat conversion for revo 13
« on: January 18, 2017, 08:20:33 AM »
I have the Jackson seat mod in my ~2012 Outback and it has its share of benefits and drawbacks... For one it barely fits on the outback, it would definitely not work on the Revo.

Here's some of my observations good and bad, keep in mind I am 5'11" and 230lbs (well I've lost a bit of wait but was 230 last trip out with this seat.) Also, I mounted mine in a temporary style where the back is mounted to a treated 2x4 and the front attaches via a backpack style strap to the front hatch to hold it down. I can still swap out to the original seat for the ocean and choppy water.

- By adding the seat this way more weight gets added to the back of the boat, meaning if there's any chop in the water you WILL get water through the rudder lines and into the hull. Depending on the chop of the water this can range from a cup or two, to several/many gallons if really choppy. Be prepared with a bilge at all times (always a good idea anyways.)

-You're sitting higher than the stock seat (and even higher than the new vantage seat) this is great for casting and comfort, but you do lose a bit of stability, in the outback it's no big deal, and I've yet to roll it with the new seat in place. I wouldn't ever use it on the salt though.

- You are sitting higher and further back from the stock seating position meaning I at 5'11" have to slightly reach forward to move the rudder control, it's not a major issue, it's just not as simple as reaching over and adjusting. Again nothing major, just something to keep in mind.

-Comfort is significantly better, I have added a foam backrest and It's night and day between this seat and the old stock one.

- The pedals require adjustment, if you're much shorter than 5'7"ish then you may have a bad time reaching the pedals with the jackson seat since it sits further back. I don't have any issue with the adjusted pedals, but something to keep in mind.

- Re entry to the kayak is different, I wouldn't say much more difficult, it's just different that the stock seat, so try it on purpose before you need to do it for real.

General Talk / Re: Reminder to get a new license
« on: January 03, 2017, 10:17:18 AM »
Bought mine at Fisherman's warehouse the other day...Just feel so privileged to pay the highest amount in the United States for the right to fish....... :smt011. My brother once again reminded me that his LIFETIME Hunting and Fishing license in North Carolina was $15.00......
Ok not moving to NC but I'm just a little disgusted that my fees which are supposed to pay for stocking fish, more game wardens and other needed fishing items almost all go to the state general fund where the goofballs downtown use it to pay for their parties at Mortons steakhouse.............................................................rant over....
Happy New Year everybody! Hope you have a great fishing year!   :smt006

I don't think we are the highest.  Washington State is higher, and their regs are just as complicated as ours.  We also have a shitload of coastline and waterways that comes with that license fee.  North Carolina has 301 miles of coastline, California has 840.

I have a lot of complaints about California and wildlife management, but the cost of a license isn't one of them.  It's trivial in the scheme of things.

California is certainly high, but you're not alone... Just to put things in perspective.

Oregon for instance:
"Regular License" allows you to basically only fish lakes and ocean (not rivers, see below): $38.00
Salmon, Steelhead, Halibut, Sturgeon Tag: $35.00 + $22.50 for each additional if you manage to "fill" one.
Columbia Basin Endorsement (necessary to fish any river that flows into the Columbia (essentially all of them.): $9.75
Aquatic Invasive species tag (required for all kayaks or boats): $7.00
Two rod validation (only valid on lakes, not nearly all rivers or ocean.): $21.50

I purchase all of these every year, and mind you I also live in Portland which opens up options for fishing in Washington state as well, meaning I also purchase essentially this x2 plus out of state fees (about $200 or so total for Washington.) Also having moved from California I can assure you regulations wise it's nowhere near as crazy there... Things change on the weekly here, I've had fishing trips planned only to have them close the season a week early and leave me high and dry trying to find where to fish.
