NCKA,

I hit the ARW with my kayak at 7:00am on 4/20. I fished from 7:00am to 12:00pm and caught two small Halibut by trolling a frozen Herring and flasher. One was caught in front of the north entrance to Ballena Bay. The other was caught about 1/4 mile down the first rock wall in the channel. The water temp was 61-62 degrees. I fished slack high tide to out going tide. The bait is stacked up at ARW and the Halibut bite should continue to improve.

Get out there!

Way to go!  How much lead did you use? And, do you believe trolling is more effective than bait-fishing right now?  :smt006

Bill

I used 8oz on a 18" dropper tied to a spreader bar. My leader was 48" with a 8" pro troll flasher. I was dragging frozen Herring. I believe trolling is better then drifting only because I can cover more water and locate the fish.

I stopped by ARW today and saw lots for fisherman catching bait and about 3-4 charter boats fishing in front of Alameda beach. Not sure if the were targeting Halibut or Striper but needless to say the area has fish.

If anyone makes it out to ARW in the next few days try drifting or trolling the area around Ballena Point. I believe the wind is blowing bait fish up against the rocks to the east. I would start at the tires guarding the entrance to Balena Bay and work south around to the channel Marker. Also the area in front of the boat ramp. I feel like there is a higher concentration of bait fish in those areas.

Post you findings and Good luck!
