Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Caples Lake 9/23
« on: September 24, 2012, 07:02:01 AM »
Did a quick troll from the really nice launch ramp (though there are lots of spots you could launch for free it looks like). Headed across lake to resort and trolled kastmasters along the gravel shoreline across the finger from the resort. Got one nice little trout. Seemed fishy, but the wind kicked up and we retired, looping around the dam and back to the ramp. Guys at the ramp had a whole bunch of fish. Most if the boats seemed centered on the middle of the lake and the cement dam on the little finger of the lake. Beautiful up there. Huffin and puffin at 8k feet.

Awesome.

Gonna hit Port Sonoma 8 a.m. Then find a launch point and fish til noon. Silver 4Runner with orange Cobra tandem. Welcome all comers. My first trip there.

Awesome. Would love some details on the road conditions, checkpoints etc. Haven't done the drive in 5 years.

Anyone have any suggestions on where to put in ... my only fishing window today is low tide. Dead low. Grrr. My high tide spots won't be available, I think.

Ppickerel - Thanks for the tip. Did a very short paddle around Big Break, just out to the river and around inside the pond. Super nice spot. Will do a paddle over to Sherman some other time. Cheers!

Thanks Vwool. Appreciate that.

Thanks you guys. Sound like EXCELLENT options!

Weather's looking fine. Can anyone recommend an awesome place to launch for one of two things:
1)Stripers on the rivers/delta?
2)Ocean ... protected launch north of the bay area for RF/Ling/Buts?
We've explored all the local spots on the bay and love them, but want to try some new water. Any suggestions appreciated!

Cobra Kayaks / Re: Cobra Tandem - How Good Are They For FIshing?
« on: May 04, 2012, 01:49:17 PM »
I got mine in December and built it up (see thread in this section). Here's my take. It's a good platform for fishing. I compare it with my OK Malibu Two that I had for 10 years. I think the pros on the Cobra are that it rides drier and provides more usable space on the deck ahead of the rear paddler. The cons on the Cobra is that while it has good initial stability, once you go past the point of stability, it rolls more abruptly. I haven't surfed with it yet, but from the vids I've seen, it's a real pig that spins out easily.

In terms of paddle-ability, it's a big, wide tandem. It has a sharper entry than the Malibu Two, so I'm gonna say the Cobra has an edge ... but only by a hair.

They're both good rigs. Oh ... one more thing.. my Cobra definitely has slightly softer plastic than the O.K. I had. Tends to scar more easily. But nothing that seems to risk hull integrity.

Check with Action Watersports down in L.A. I got mine for a steal down there. It was an end of year clearance, but maybe they will cut you a deal. I think I spent $425 on it! Something like that.

Awsome, Cameron. Thanks! I'd never heard of Dexter Russel. I'll check 'em out! I'm with you re: carbon v. stainless. I keep a stainless in my fishing box for quick water side cleaning. The carbon stays in the kitchen where I can treat it right.

the way i see it is, the best filet knife is the one that has the best balance in your hand, you have to think about it this way, how much and how often are you going to be fileting fish, are these fish all the same size and species or are you going to be fileting mostly rock fish or salmonids or pelagics, every species needs a certain touch, but it all comes down to feel in the hand, if the knife doesnt feel well then you will not slice, butcher as well, and are you going to be doing more than 1-5 fish a day or 1-5 fish a month, i do a lot of animal break down and i have my favorites for every animal i do, and as long as the knife is comfortable in your hand it becomes your hand, some are for pushing some are for drawing, some do both, all depends on your style and experience, when it comes down to material the knife is made of thats a whole different subject. carbon vs stainless, carbon is a corrosion prone material and doesnt keep an edge as long but is alot easier to maintain and sharpen than stainless, but it gets a great patina the older it gets, i have carbon knives i have had for almost 30 years, stainless knives dont take any maintaince to be pretty but it is harder to maintain the edge and when it goes you need to take away more metal to regain the edge to factory sharp, and my oldest stainless knife is 20 years old and it started as a 10in chef and is now a 8in almost boning knife on the shape, but for an all around  brand for recreational fish breaker i would go with a dexter russel, hope this helps, cameron
