General Talk / Cambria Mussel Harvest
« on: November 29, 2018, 07:36:39 AM »
Taking the wife to Cambria this weekend for her bday and while I won't take my kayak, I thought it might be cool to harvest mussels and potentially eat them at the beach. Any recommendation on where to go? Thanks in advance

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / SC 9/22
« on: September 21, 2018, 08:17:12 AM »
Was considering Santa Cruz tomorrow morning but it looks like the forecast is South swell (well SE) and was wondering if it should even try (despite being on the water of course).
Thanks

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / [RPT] Santa Cruz 9/2
« on: September 02, 2018, 05:14:15 PM »

I launched from Dock A around 6:30AM, it was still dark and I realized my flag light was out of battery (mental note, check before to leave or keep spare battery in the car).
I headed toward the yellow buoy on the East side of the harbor and hooked up two decent size browns.  Found my way pass the mile buoy for nothing. Then I found baits and decided to fish on a fringe and got lucky. I got my first halibut out of Santa Cruz, just North of the mile buoy as I started to go in slowly in about 60' of water. It was 30" and ~ 8.8lbs ;-)

I initially thought it was a ling but then saw it and started to freak a little. I got my net ready but quickly realized I couldn't net it. Wanted to use the gaff but didn't get it ready before, so somehow just pulled it in and blocked it my leg while reaching out to my clip. The clip was on but the hook was off... so not sure how it happened but I secured that fish somehow.

When the adrenaline settled, I saw my net floating and getting away... I tried to get it back but not quickly enough as the handle filled with water and it started to sink. I could have gotten it with a big chance of taking a swim so decided to let it go :-(
It is too bad as I liked it quite a bit but I got it at Mel Cotton which is now closed (gosh I miss that store...). Anyway now I'm on the market for a new one.

@nowhereman, the set up worked like a charm but I think I need to switch to a pedal boat for trolling. The 2019 Outback looks pretty sweet

I'm going to try fishing for the first time since I tore my meniscus so we shall see. I'll be launching from A dock around 6:30/7AM. I'll be on Ch 69. I realize most of you will be at Albion and I wish I was there as well but ping me on the water if you're in SC.

General Talk / Tapatalk?

Is it only me but for a while now and I don't see anything in the 'unread' section in Tapatalk? I just tried to refollow NCKA but it still does the same. To be honest it is very annoying... I'm on Samsung S8 Android by the way.
Thanks

Trying to see if I can squeeze in my first trip in quite a while. The weather looks ok but looks like there is a south swell so wondering if I should even try? Does South swell have the same impact in Half Moon Bay?

Other Kayaks / New Predator 13 console and rod holder
« on: November 25, 2017, 04:17:43 PM »

Took the wife to a little getaway in Monterey yesterday and I stopped by MBK. I saw the new Predator 13 and it has a new console (similar to the new Trident 13) and yes finally, 2 rod holders right behind the seat.

I checked the Predator website but it looks like they haven't updated it yet (by the way, is it PolePole on the cover page? see picture).

Anyway, was trying to see if I could retrofit mine with these 2 new great features. Does anyone know?

Thanks
JC

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / [RPT] HMB 9/17
« on: September 17, 2017, 05:06:37 PM »
Not sure what happened to my previous attempt (user error...) :smt012

Anyway as I was saying, I decided to go out today and went to HMB as there is no fish in SC :-) I launched by HBK between 6:30 and 7 and headed toward the  green can, then continue toward the red and came back to fish the reef/kelp with not much luck. Only caught a couple of king fishs and a small brown.

Apparently everyone else was out for Salmon and the bit was on. Heard a few limit on the radio and witness one back on the parking lot.
I snapped a picture of Will's buddy on the way out. Sorry, forgot your screen name and the quality is pretty bad...

My last trip was exactly two month ago so I got my water therapy and I was home for lunch with the family

Wanted to do a little fishing tomorrow as the family is away and I have all day for myself :-) Considering Santa Cruz but the forecast shows South swell... HMB looks also pretty good so I might try my luck over there? I will also consider SWS. Anyone else going?

General Talk / Surf Class and Outback demo
« on: July 02, 2017, 06:32:17 PM »
No fishing for me today but went to Moss Landing for a surf kayak class with David from Kayak Connection. Great start and great instructor but the waves were kind of bad for a beginner like me and we had to go back. So I guess I will have to reschedule :-)

On the way back, i stopped by Santa Cruz to demo the Outback as I'm considering switching to the dark side. Demo is only in the harbor so were not able to go out to test how it handles the swell but I have to say that it felt a bit weird not to use a paddle. When I saw people holding to their Hobie at GS11 while I was using my paddle to manage the waves and my balance, I wanted to get a better feel...
Anyway, wondering if such weird feeling is normal the first time you tried a Hobie and that after a couple of trips it gets better?
I was concerned about the pedal reach as I'm pretty short but it was good. I was also concerned about the deck space because of the drive but it was ok. But no pole (and my main interest is hand free fishing) and didn't try to land fish (wondering if the line gets tangled into the drive...).
I might have to take one on a fishing trip to get a better idea before I can decide. Maybe renting one for a day would be a good idea.

I just went back to kick boxing after a 26 years break (and it is painful and even more at my age...) and found a nice gym led by a former World Champion that I use to go watch fight back in the days...

Anyway I attached the flyer in case you guys are interested...
