For Sale / Shimano Stradic 4000
« on: March 29, 2016, 09:40:58 PM »
In my former life as a land lubber, my spinning reel of choice was the Stradic 4000. Ive had several of them over the years, and they all have stories to tell.  This one's story ends sadly when I broke its arm off backwards.

It had been a while since I dusted off the old Stradic. So long in fact, I forgot the crank arm is not reverse threaded for removal. A cap located on the other side of the crank arm backs out, and that releases the crank.  So there was trying to back the crank arm out when it broke in two.  Foolishly I threw away the handle figuring it would be easy to replace it. Unfortunately, this "build" is no longer supported and Shimano could not replace it. Its gotta be at least 15 years old.

I did not try beyond emailing Shimano in effort to replace the crank.  I really have no idea how likely it would be to find one. Other then lacking an arm, the reel is in decent condition.  It does run a bit rough, but just needs a cleaning and lube.  Ive got four additional spools each loaded up really really really old line. This puppy is ready to go!!!

It could be all yours for $0.00 OBO

You gotta pick up in Santa Cruz area, or possible NCKA express

Fishing Pics / GoPro Trolling 2015
« on: January 17, 2016, 11:45:27 AM »
I’ve finally put the finishing touches on my compilation video from the 2015 season.  All footage was collected from the kayak between Big Sur and HMB trolling along the bottom with a GoPro mounted on Video Fins from Groupbinc.com. Various hookless lures were used to attract subjects.   I got some interesting footage this year, and dialed in my camera setting to maximize lighting and picture quality. Bump the resolution up to 720 for best quality. Thanks for looking.

Fish Talk / Ode to El Nino 2015
« on: November 08, 2015, 10:42:49 AM »
I know El Nino 2015 is far from over. Bluefin and bonito are still being caught on the daily basis, and the winter storm season is just ramping up. But with the onset of the stormy season, SST charts are already showing a cooling trend in local waters.  As the storm season progresses, fishing weather windows will decrease and the churning seas will continue to cool. What the future holds is anyone's guess, but it looks like the beginning of the end; at least on the fishing front.  So post up any unusual or exotic fish you caught this year.

I had three unusual catches this year; multiple bonito missions, a surprise barracuda, and a small sable fish.

I am going to be spending this weekend in the Placerville area; specifically Pollock Pines.  My wife and I agreed to hike one day and kayak fish another day. She is deciding where we will hike, and I get to decide where to fish.

I am leaning toward Tahoe as it is a reasonable day trip and such a beautiful lake. I have only been to Tahoe once and I didn’t fish, but it looks to be a challenging lake to fish due to its size and super clear water. Lake trout are kind of a long shot target I presume, and for this reason figured I’d be targeting browns and rainbows. I'm not asking for any secret intel, but some general guidance would be greatly appreciated.  What depth would you focus on? Would you imitate small fish, or invertebrates? Trolling or “trooching”? Downrigger necessary?

Using my own intuition, I would start by trolling 3 to 4 inch Rapalas and inline spinners, in water just too deep to clearly see the bottom (which in this lake is pretty deep I think?). Also, marabou jigs on a slow drift has worked well for me in other locations. I don’t usually use live bait for trout because they seem to just swallow the hook and die.
Anybody mind sharing some suggestions on other tactics, or expand on these tactics.  I'm even open to other lakes all together.

Thanks in advance.  :smt006

Fish ID sub-forum / Sablefish ?
« on: July 05, 2015, 02:03:18 PM »
I am unsure exactly what this fish is.  Caught from Capitola while trolling the upper water column. Looks like a Sablefish based on my research. What do the experts think?

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / 831 Area Dragonfly Owners Needed.
« on: June 21, 2015, 01:35:11 PM »
See the attached link regarding my fishfinder problems.  Is there a Dragonfly owner within reasonable driving distance of Santa Cruz who would be willing to help me troubleshoot / isolate the problem with my fish finder before I return it to Raymarine; AGAIN.

All I would need is 5 minutes to plug my head unit into your transducer and power source, and vice versa.  I will bring you a beer of your choice.  My Dragonfly clean and healthy and has no communicable diseases.  :smt002

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Dragonfly intermittent power loss
« on: May 24, 2015, 03:38:56 PM »
I recently installed a Raymarine Dragonfly.  I really like this unit, but have been experiencing intermittent power losses. The last couple of outings, the unit powered down for no reason.  The first couple times this happened, I was able to simply turn it back on with no problems.  Today though, the unit shut off and would not come back on. When I hit the power button it beeped as if powered up, but the screen would not light up. To troubleshoot, I unplugged the head unit from the power cable and tried to turn it back on again.  Same problem persisted; it beeped as if powered up, but nothing displayed on screen.  After giving up on it for an hour or so, I tried to power it up again.  This time it powered up normally and worked fine for an hour before losing power again.  Again when I tried to power it back up it beeped but the display would not work. I’m going to contact customer service but was curious if anybody else had this problem.
