General Talk / Hobie Tandem
« on: May 13, 2015, 07:35:14 PM »
I am thinking of getting back into kayak fishing as my oldest boy is ready to join me.  A tandem would make me more comfortable so I can watch him closely.  I have a Hobie Adventure now so I figured the Hobie tandem would be perfect.

I was at Mel Cotton's yesterday checking out the latest and greatest.  The seats look very comfortable and the boats seem like they are loaded with the updated fins and rudder.  Almost had a heart attack when I saw the price!!!  $3400!  Are you fricken kidding me???

General Talk / Checking kayak for leaks?
« on: September 14, 2008, 03:17:18 PM »
I flipped my yak at launch this weekend.  After landing there was a bit of water in the hull.  What is the best way to check the hull for leaks?  Do I need to fill it up and see if it leaks thru the drive well or scuppers?  Let me know if there is an easier way.

For Sale / cheap GPS at REI-Outlet

Magellan Explorist 100 - $40.  http://www.rei.com/product/716262

I'm not too happy with my Explorist 500 (USB doesn't connect to PC, software sux, doesn't look H2O-proof), but this seems like a good price for a basic GPS that should get you home.

General Talk / Harbor to Harbor?
« on: July 24, 2007, 07:50:13 PM »
Has anyone paddled from Santa Cruz Harbor to Monterey Harbor (or vice versa)?  I show it as 22 NM on the GPS calculator.  I think it would be worth trying if tuna showed up real close or for salmon (the direct route would be through Soquel Hole).  Then again, any fish caught would probably be crap after such a long day...

General Talk / Fixing a rod tip?
« on: July 01, 2007, 01:41:10 PM »
The tip on one of my rods came loose.  It doesn't come off, but it spins free.

Is it okay is I just use Gorilla Glue to fix it?  Let me know if you think I should use somthing else.

Thanks - Kevin

PS - the rod is a Seeker American(?) - one of the lower end Seekers...

Hobie Kayaks / my rigged Hobie Adventure
« on: May 25, 2007, 04:14:29 PM »
A couple of weeks ago, I finally got started rigging my Hobie Adventure.  I wanted to fish it a few times to get a feel for where everything should go.  I'm still not ready to drill a lot of holes so this set up is still temporary.  The cables are going through the front hatch.  Talk about a bird's nest!  When I find my ideal configuration, I'll use a cable cam through the hull.  That should pretty her up!

I'd love to hear feedback on what works for others.

Here's some pics for now:

The pedals while great for speed and range sure take up room.  The RAM mount is a great way to work around them!

Cables through hatch.  Did the same thing with my T120 and Tupperware hatch.  This should be more secure!
Rigged Hobie Adv-6

Temp GPS home using a suction cup.  Took the suction cup off a water-skier down flag from Boaters World.  Perfect fit.  Let's hope it holds.  A bit ghetto...

I'll probably permanently mount the antenna near the back hatch and run the cables down one side.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Goop?
« on: April 22, 2007, 02:35:27 PM »
I went to Home Depot looking for Marine Goop.  All they had was Household Goop.  Is goop, goop?

I'm going to use it to mount my transducer and seal my FF and rod holder mounts (screws).

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Spinning rod recommendations
« on: April 05, 2007, 06:02:51 PM »
I picked up a spinning reel at Mel's last weekend.  I'm looking for a rod to pair it up.  Thinking of using it for stripers in the Bay and Forebay and maybe light RF.  Any ideas?

Non-yak report, but figure some of you would be interested in the conditions.  Fished from the shore with my dad.  Pretty slow, but managed a pair of standard rainbow planters.  A few others from shore had hits but not alot of fish landed.

Cold and windy most of the day with big gusts that would make drifting a yak kind of fast.  The man running the shack said water vis was 12'...
