I was at SWS yesterday fishing right next to fire rock and heard reports of a white shark sighting in that area. Today I saw this post on a separate forum that a kayak was attacked. Not sure whether Matt is in the NCKA group, but glad he is okay. Stay safe out there!

Guessing he is fairly new to SWS. There have been multiple sightings as well as attacks at that location.

Yeah, I saw one there several years ago, and I see them regularly here in SC - still a sobering reminder of where we fish.

I was on the water fishing about 100 yards away talking to Matt's friend when he was flipped. I arrived in the area only a few minutes earlier and asked his friend how the fishing was and was preparing to drop when he was bumped.

Matt did a great job of getting our attention when he flipped, then quickly righted his kayak and reboarded. His friend and I assisted with collecting the items floating overboard then we departed the area.

I was running a shark shield at the time but doubt it had any impact due to the distance between us when it occured. The four of us paddled back into the cove keeping close together.

What did I learn from seeing this first hand:

Matt was wearing a PFD. This was key to him being able to stay afloat, right his kayak and get back onboard quickly.

2) Once everything calmed down it would have been a good idea to check to see if his hull was compromised to verify water entry. If there was a lot of water coming in free surface effect would have caused him to roll again, leading to another problem. I always carry a hand pump for this reason.

Can I get a acronym check on "SWS"? New to the area from SoCal.

Kayak color was not yellow. It was a mossy green.

One thing I did notice in the area where this happened. About an hour earlier there was a ton of birds in the area, more then I had ever seen on the water in that location by a factor of 50x. Whatever drew them in likely drew in the apex predator.

Stillwater South.  There are two Stillwater coves in the NCKA area.  The one in Monterey County is SWS.  The one in Sonoma County is Stillwater North or SWN.

Made me think of the time a GWS was chewing on that small skiff near Capitola a few yrs back. Was posted on there website.

It was several yrs back when the juvenile GWS were congregating near the cement ship. Someone out of the Watsonville airport was offering helicopter rides to the cement ship for several minutes to get a great aerial view of them. 99 bucks for three people. Couldn't get anyone to go with me.  Would have been worth the hunskie just to experience it.

They are still out there at Seacliff and New Brighton. Juvenile sharks are migrating north due to warming ocean temperatures.

This is one of the solid reasons I've always been wary about spearfishing this area.  Most of my time in the water there has been with tanks and gear, which is excellent at keeping the GWS away.  This is like the 10th sighting by divers or kayakers in the last year.

Great to hear everyone banded together and supported.
I'd rather be swinging...
