Wanted To Buy / WTB Avet SXJ 5.3 Silver RH
« on: September 13, 2020, 12:04:21 PM »
I plan to pick up an Avet SXJ 5.3 in silver this week, but figured I'd ask here first in case anyone's sitting on one looking to sell.  Planning to pair it with my Trevala TCV66M.

For Sale / Shimano Baitrunner 4500B
« on: September 13, 2020, 11:49:48 AM »
Cleaning out the reel collection to make room.  Barely used and well maintained Shimano Baitrunner 4500B.  If you're not familiar with the Baitrunner, it has a secondary drag system for live bait.  Either flipping the lever on the bottom or starting to reel switches it to the main drag system.

Specs:
  • 4.8:1 Gear ratio
  • 3 ball bearings and 1 roller bearing
  • 22.2 oz in weight
  • 14/295, 17/250, 20/195 mono capacity

Asking $100 but reasonable offers will be considered.  Paypal, Venmo, Square Cash, real cash.

Pickup in SF; willing to ship (buyer pays rate); willing to deliver within about 35 miles.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Re: Bolinas 9/11

I wonder if there is something we could do in partnership w/ USCG and all of the local kayak shops/dealers, fishing stores, etc. a simple pamphlet - “know before you go” kind of informative pamphlet or card that can be handed out to prospective new kayakers.

This is what the USCG Auxiliary does.  They hold Boating Safety courses and do public outreach for safe boating, including dockside safety inspections.  Unfortunately, it's not usually due to a lack of available information, but moreso the "it won't happen to me" mentality.  Granted, I might be jaded -- I did 10 yrs of search and rescue with the USCG as a boat operator.

CalFire air attack on Napa and Sonoma incidents

Is that somewhere the rest of us can look at?

fun to watch the planes working the fires

If you're interested in a less corporate site, https://globe.adsbexchange.com/ is really good.  The data are collected in the same way flightradar24 collects their data -- from ads-b receivers that upload the data.

Hobie Kayaks / Re: Hobie Compass vs Passport 12 ?
« on: September 10, 2020, 07:43:54 AM »
I'm asking for my brother, who mostly fishes for bass on modest-sized midwestern lakes. He's a cheapskate and so the real question is whether the Compass is worth $500 more than the Passport 12.

Whaddayathink?
I looked at both.  I got the compass.  Big reason was passport had a seam that could separate.  Second big reason was you hand to physically fold the rudder up when you get in shallow water. I'm to old for that.
I've used my compass every week since I got it. I love it.

Sent from my SM-S767VL using Tapatalk

All great points in favor of the compass.  I was making the same decision and decided on the Passport 12 instead of the Compass, so I figured I would offer my reasonings to offer the other perspective.

The Passport seems to have more options for DIY improvements:  all 3 hatches, more flat areas for DIY cargo solutions, etc.  The rudder situation is a bummer, but I figure I'll rig up a line to stow the rudder when I inevitably upgrade the rudder.

In the end, they're both great choices from what I can tell, so I doubt you'd be unhappy regardless of your selection.

It's really awesome for you to write this story.  It not only serves others by letting them learn from your mistakes, but it helps you process it in a clear, linear fashion.  I know how peer pressure and not wanting to let your buddy down or not wanting to be the guy that suggests the drive was a waste of time can really weigh on you.  When I was in the Coast Guard, we had two things that helped mitigate this:  Risk assessment in the form of a Green-Amber-Red (GAR) model and Team Coordination Training (TCT).

TCT taught us that anyone had as much say as all of us.  This is what helps you feel okay with saying, "hey man, today's not the day... I don't like this storm."  In other words, when the guy who's having his first day on the water says to the salty skipper, "hey, you see that buoy we're about to hit?" he doesn't hear "does this look like my first day, kid?" he hears "yup, taking that down my port side close."

More importantly, the Risk Assessment model would have helped talk yourself out of going out that morning.  We would score each of six categories a risk rating from 0 (no risk) to 10 (highest risk).  The sum of those scores would yield a result of Green (low risk, proceed as normal), Amber (high risk, attempt to mitigate risks to increase score) and Red (extreme risk, cancel evolution).  Those six categories were: Supervision -- how qualified is the person supervising the evolution?; Planning -- how well did we plan? how much information was available? how clear is the information?; Team Selection -- how experienced is the team? how many normally work together?; Team Fitness -- good night's sleep? well rested?  haven't put in a full workday yet?; Environment -- weather and water conditions; Event Complexity -- have we done this before?  will we be distracted by learning?

So, let's draw an example of your situation.  Drop Supervision as this is hobbying, not workboat stuff.  For the rest, I figured you'd have docked points from Planning because you didn't plan for the weather to be this way and you didn't have a currently reliable forecast, Fitness because you were working on 3 hours of sleep, Environment because of the observed weather conditions, and Event Complexity because it was your first time going out for salmon in the 'yak.  That would definitely had yielded an amber risk assessment, and possibly a red.  Either way, you'd have been looking at a less than green risk assessment with your buddy and probably would have turned around.

Not trying to preach, but more along the lines of sharing what the pros do to make the decision to go out.  Thanks again for sharing your experience.

Introductions / Re: I see a yak in my future...
« on: September 09, 2020, 12:23:03 PM »
With a 5 year lapse between posts, I figured a re-intro was in order.

Well, 5.5 years later... I'm actually doing it!  My current plan is to get a Passport 12 and DIY a few mods to it to suit my needs.  The biggest delay in buying was storage since I live in SF and don't have a garage.  But, after learning that HMB Kayak Co does storage, I decided to pull the trigger.  Of course, I'm pulling the trigger at what seems to be the worst possible timing with the inventory issues due to COVID-19.

That's cool about HMB kayaks storing kayaks. Do you happen to know if they only allow retrieval of your yak during operating hours (9am-5pm) or can you get it anytime?

If you provide your own cable lock, you can have access outside of normal business hours.  If you bring it back during business hours, they will rinse it off for you, too.  They do not store anything but the hull, though, so you still have to haul everything else.

I know inventory has been severely impacted with the COVID-19 purchase craze, but at what point does Hobie stop manufacturing the 2020s?  Is it possible to order a 2020 model and still get it or is the only option to buy new right now to wait for the 2021s?  I just sent out a feeler to Cal Kayak for a 2020 Passport 12, but haven't heard back yet, so this thread got me curious.

I've also reached out to Cal kayak as well but so far nothing. But if I were you, I'd reach out to Hobie to find out the cutoff for the 2020's via Facebook. They take a day or two to respond but you might get your answer to make a more informed decision on which year model to buy.

Keith from Cal Kayak got back to me and they don't have much inventory until November.  However, they referred me to Wind Toys in Santa Rosa and I just put a deposit down on a Passport 12!  They have 2 more unsold if that's what you were looking for.

For the rest, they said 2021 inventory will be in stock in November even with the delay mentioned in the OP.

Good idea!  I've reached out to them on Facebook.  I'll give Cal Kayak a call today and see if that works better than email.

welcome tedski! I think I recognize you from the other board.

I'm sure once you get into the kayak fishing game, you won't be surfcasting as much like I have.

I have a feeling in the back of my mind that you're right.  After 10 years of driving boats in the USCG, I think my surfcasting hobby was a way to get close to the water since I was unable to get on the water again.  We'll see, though!

I was surprised to learn that Lowe's also carries food grade buckets in most stores.  They carry them in 2 and 5 gallon sizes.  They're clearly labeled as such, too.

Long time surfcaster here... originally from NJ, been out west for about 15 yrs now.  Starting to get drawn to the idea of a yak.  I have a bit of paddling experience on rivers and bays, but never out front.  I'm starting to eye up something with a mirage drive, but I'll be lurking around here absorbing some knowledge for awhile.
