Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / HMB 9-7
« on: September 08, 2021, 01:19:12 PM »
Went out looking for salmon but no dice. Big schools of really small anchovies all the way out to the red can but salmon still haven't shown up for the free lunch. Got a nice ling and called it a day.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / What to do with fish finder cables
« on: September 30, 2020, 10:45:03 PM »
For the folks who have gone through the trouble of wire the fish finder into your hobies. What do you do with the cables when you're not using the fish finder? Anyone come up with a clever way of protecting the cable ends when you're doing something like crabbing, where you don't need sonar?

Personally a big fan of the NRS chinook fishing lifejacket and any VHF radio that floats. Just like demoing some kayaks for the PFD it's worth going to your local kayak shop and trying some stuff on.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Scopolamine

If the scopolamine is a bit much for you (re: some of the side effect stories on this page), you can try taking a dose or half a dose of diphenhydramine (Benadryl; yes, the allergy medication).  It's the same class of medication and works the same way, it just won't last as long.

Good to know! I've crabbed out there for years but never thought about looking for salmon.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Best face shield for sun protection?

I hear you on the sunscreen. I've been using one of these guys for the last 4 or 5 years and have really enjoyed it. https://www.phunkshunwear.com/shop/ballerclavas/convertible/ The fogging glasses can still be an issue though. I've found rinsing my sunnies in some soapy water before I head out for the day helps minimize that though.

I'm going to offer a different opinion than all the folks talking up the Revo and Outback (both assuredly great boats). I've been using a compass for a few years now and find it more than adequate, especially considering its hundreds of dollars cheaper if you're going to be buying new. It's a little slower than the revo but not nearly as heavy as the outback. It's not as feature rich as either boat but I've never really found that to be an issue. It's got the gear tracks preinstalled and a palatial tank well.

The kick up fins, as many people have said, aren't all that important in the ocean. You'll be pulling the drive and using a regular paddle to launch and land. However, if you're going to be doing a bunch of fishing in shallow estuaries it might be something that you should consider but I don't do that so someone else will have to chime in on when that might be a useful feature.

I load my yak upside down on some Thule squarebars without any sort of cushioning and have never had an issue. Just make sure you don't have anything in the gear tracks or other pressures points.

36" chinook in Pacifica. Aug 2019. Here's to hoping for another one of these in 2020!

Introductions / New to the board
« on: June 12, 2020, 11:18:45 PM »
Finally moved back to the Bay after a few years in Colorado. Stoked to get on the water again!

Mostly launch out of Pacifica and HMB but I'll be starting a job in Fresno in the next month of so, so SC and Monterey are going to be fair game too.
