General Talk / Radio-controlled Whatever
« on: December 05, 2023, 10:31:36 AM »
I'm thinking about learning to pilot a recreational drone and the first stumbling block I came to was the LiPO battery charger.

Is there anyone using radio-controlled models or drones who can help me figure out what I need - or just how to figure out what I need?

Also: is there such a thing as LiFePo4 battery packs for these things?

I should never have started down this trail.  I seemed smarter before I did.

Ocean Kayaks / Trident Restoration Questions
« on: November 08, 2023, 11:58:06 AM »
The kids dropped off their T11 so I could fill in some screw holes.  That's done, but I noticed the water bath puck for the transducer is squishes, torn and unusable - but I can't get it out.

I'm the one who installed it and it's only held by GOOP, but this GOOP has turned rock hard and it's resisted every reasonable attempt to remove the puck - it has laughed at yanking on the puck, tearing it apart, and using paint scrapers and flexible putty knives.

Has anyone had GOOP turn to the dark side?  How did you get it out?

The straps for the seat back are stiff.  Not horribly stiff, and they don't appear to be either filthy dirty or sun-damaged, but they're hard to pull to adjust the seat back.  I haven't tried to do anything about the straps, yet.

Has anyone had to work with nylon straps to get them to loosen up and be flexible again?  How'd you do that?

General Talk / Need and hand - NCKA Express
« on: August 01, 2023, 07:38:42 AM »
I've mentioned this in the Classifieds under a WANTED post but now I've found two kayaks I like and would buy whichever I can get to me.

One is in Fort Bragg, the other is way down south in Santa Maria.  I am in Port Orford, Oregon.  Another NCKA member has kindly offered to get either one of them up to me if I can get it to Walnut Creek or, on a Wednesday, to El Cerrito.

Is there anyone who can move a kayak around for me?  Your true reward will come in Heaven, but until then, I'd be hugely grateful for your help.

Craftsmen's Corner / Filling in bolt holes?
« on: July 15, 2023, 09:06:50 AM »
I'm being asked to fill in the bolt holes left behind when a Scotty 241 mount was removed.

I believe they're 3/16th inch in diameter bolts.

Would using a plastic welder and welding rods be the best way, or is there another method of filling them (and making them look nice when I'm done)?

I expect I'll only need to do anything like this once.

Hobie Kayaks / Questions about 2016 Outbacks
« on: July 04, 2023, 08:53:57 AM »
I found one in new condition that I'm interested in, but I don't know much about them.  Not enough to properly inspect this one, anyway.

Are there any weaknesses in the 2016's?  Hull? Mirage drive? Vantage seat?  Rudder cords?

There's also a clean 2018 Outback for about the same cost but a bit farther away from me.  Are there differences between the 2016's and the 2018's?

I can't believe I might stop paddling and start pedaling.

Wanted To Buy / Wanted: A Smaller and Simpler Kayak
« on: June 28, 2023, 04:50:20 AM »
I'm searching for a smaller , lighter, simpler kayak for some badly needed paddling exercise.  Any one of these:

- Ocean Kayak Trident 11
- Ocean Kayak Tetra 12
- Wilderness Systems tarpon 120
- Necky Dolphin

At this time, these are the kayaks I know I can still lift, so it would take some convincing to get me interested in something other than one of those three.  Just sayin'.

I've been trolling Facebook Marketplace and craigslist for a while, and while they'll pop up sporadically, few are in great condition and those that are get gobbled-up quickly.

If you have one, see one, or know of one for sale, I'd be grateful if you'd let me know about it.

Introductions / I'm Back!
« on: June 27, 2023, 03:58:36 PM »
Well, gamma rays and chemotherapy didn't kill me, and the Administrators were kind enough to let me re-register, but O My Stars and Garters, I've been demoted to Sand Dab?

Life can be so cruel.

Happy to be here.  Happy to be alive.

Thank you, Allen, and all.
