You often call my words harsh, but this is why.  You are proving that you are going out underprepared and riding a wave of luck.  Learn your shit and do better.
End rant and apologies for the threadjack.

Hi Tedski, everyone has their strength and weakness, no one is perfect and no one can say they never made mistake, for me, I am keep learning humbling and thank you for your knowledge sharing.

For me, I also like to share my knowledge and experience, but I wont criticize others based on my strength, this only give others uncomfortable and depress, wont change anything, wont earn any credit or build glorious image.

I come here want to learn something which I dont know with happiness, but if someone keep depressing me, I rather escape, rather quit to save my time to explain, to type words, to spend time for purging out my frustrate.

No one is god, no one must have and cannot live without him/them. I can learn what ever I want from somewhere else. I think I wont come here anymore

From the article:

“… around 10:20 p.m. Saturday, the sheriff's office received a call about the missing boat.

The U.S. Coast Guard was informed of the situation around 11:40 p.m.”

Why would the sheriff wait an hour and 20 minutes to inform the CG? That makes no sense to me.

Yes, I also feel it’s unbelievable. too many unbelievers things happened to this tragedy

Maybe you can use a bigger PVC pipe? Looks your PVC the diameter is too small.

And from my experience, 4 saddles can support your TI well, you can see my 4 saddles how to support my TI

Safety First / Re: New Ocean Fishing Buddy Checklis

My opinions tend to go against the current here so take this with a grain of salt

The typical gear junkie syndrome is to overload yaks which imo makes them unsafe

Same principle goes for safety gear as everything else you should keep it simple and know what to do in a pinch

I am quite with you, i think usually there is three steps:
1st:  The simple because dont know what to bring and dont really realize the how risk on the ocean
2nd: after learn the stories and listen the suggestions from others people, add this add that to be safe, in the end found too complicated, too many stuff provided duplicate functions
3rd: slowly found what stuffs are really I need, consider my own strength and weaknesses, consider where i am going, decide what stuff i must to have  when in ocean, what stuff can be multi-functional to cover lots of area. So reduce a lot of duplicate stuff in kayak, from the real experience to realize the theory that the more simple the more reliable and will be better. You can see, all the top experienced survivors their equipment all are very simple but useful

These steps cannot be skipped, if someone jump to 3rd step, they maybe don’t really understand why simple and why it is better, they maybe also don't know whether their limited belongings can cover all difficult situations or not.

This is My 2 cents

Very sad, my thoughts are with the family.

I don’t know how CG work at midnight, yesterday Saturday around 01:00am before I launch kayak in HMB, I use channel 16 saying “for testing” , i want to be secure in case something happens, but no one reply to me after i tried couple times, i gave up testing to continue launch. I bet I will be ok as long as i take careful. My radio work fine because i can hear someone talk in day time from channel 69

CG didn’t work at midnight?

CG works 24/7.  They don't typically respond to radio checks on 16 - keep the channel clear for emergencies.

From my experience I doubt that they always standby 7/24, like yesterday at  01:00am, should be very free and response to my test only take 0.01 second, why they didn’t do? i guess the duty guy maybe walk away for a while because they think at that time should be no one in ocean?

I mean actually maybe the boaters called CG at midnight for help but got no answer? People in boat usually didn't wear wet or drysuit, so if sink in water cannot survive for more than one hour, will lost sense in 20 minutes, when the duty guy came back, the boater already lost ability to call again?

This is only my guess , otherwise why they didnt call CG  for help ? Why until someone reported to CG because the boat didn’t return on time? If they didnt bring PLB, but hard to believe they didn’t bring radios

Anyway, this is just my guess, maybe i am wrong, i didn’t mean good or bad :smt009

Correction: a single sardine may be visible in the pot at the bottom of the picture.

I was curious if GPT 4o can identify fish, and it nailed the jacksmelt ID. It’s going to mess up tricky identification like different species of rockfish, and you should always check the ID using an authoritative source, but it’s pretty cool how far general models have come.

What is GPT 4o? How it work? If it can identify fish correctly, then next time i can go for rockfish without fear. Because I am really confused some rockfish identify, only know some rockfish like blue rockfish because their color is blue, easy to identify, some fish are difficult to identify , so i no much interest on rockfish.

And to be frankly, I knew what ever the sardines, mech. Anchovies, jack all no limit or limit is large cannot be met,  like herring 1 Home Dep bucket, i didnt spend more focus on sardines and mech  these have fewer scales fish, i saw people always keep them as many as they can, so i let them to be one group for me, mech is sardine and sardine is meck for me, and one other shame reason for me call these kind fish as sardine, that is sardine is easy words for me, the mech spelling so long, its hard for me to spell out correctly. But anyway, i know i am safe to identify these two species as one, like yesterday when i on the way back to harbor, one police boat stop me and check what fish what crab i have, I without worry because i knew i followed the rule. But yes, to identify each fish clearly and spell their name out correctly is always a good behavior, I accept your suggestion

And when I fishing sardine or meck yesterday, i got one small blue rockfish and one small salmon. I released salmon and keep the blue rock, maybe you can find that one in picture.

12
Oops, looks I waste a lot, ok, next time i will eat everything except gills and shell too

Today I only got 4 dungeness,  but I bycatch a lot others  :smt005

Hi all, may i ask a very stupid question?

As picture shows, the black and yellow stuff can eat? Or i have to remove it before freeze? Or before cook?

Usually i throw away everything except the leg and the white muscle, but i think should something I still can eat?

Thx

1st picture: the black stuff can eat?
2nd picture: the yellow stuff can eat?
3rd picture: I throw shells, something inside still can eat?

I launched just before 7 from HMB. Sea state not as bad as expected. Nice long period big swell. Limited out at 10:30 with all crabs above 6.5".

Congrats on the crab limit Tedski.   Where are the pictures?  :smt003

Okay, fine!   :smt006

Congrats on the limit and good to hear the conditions were better than expected - the forecast was pretty bleak. How deep are they holding?

Cheers,
Brad

50' is where I found them.  Dropped a few to scout 35' and in between with some luck, but 50' was very productive.

Finally got 4 dunge,  i am done today. Below is where i sink my net, its wrong spot?

Either spot problem, either bait problem. Any gentleman can point where i am wrong?

Thanks!
I have found 50' deep east of the green can to be as far as you need to go.  I've stopped going outside the reef for crab as I haven't found a need.  For bait, I use any fish head or frame from the freezer as chew bait and chunked mackerel, squid, jacksmelt, anchovy, whatever as my stink bait.  Hope that helps.

Tedski, next time I follow you :smt005

Big swell in the dark pulling net, got sea sake…

It’s hard to believe that someone who can spend 12 days in a kayak gets seasick…

Nice catches! Yeah, I wondered how the sea sick happened for Mr X considering his other trips.

At midnight, the wind and swell much bigger than day time, when i pulling the net up, i have to see very near, need to focus on the small area where bright by headlight while my body up and down by swell like roller coaster, I cannot handle that , do getting sea sick.  :smt044
