Hey guys,
The power cable broke on my fish finder right below this yellow thing. Does anyone know what that part does? I could get a replacement cable for $20, but I was wondering if anyone had a cheap and easy fix (like just connect below where it broke, without the yellow thing). Thanks for any help!

As long as you still have some cable left, all of that stuff can be cut off and a new terminal end added. Dont really need a fuse unless your hooking up to a boat power system.  Looks like a lot of corrosion, do you use a box or bag for your battery?  Strip some insulation and make sure the corrosion doesn't go further up the wire.

Thanks, I’m just using an SLA battery so sounds like that yellow thing is unnecessary? I have plenty of those connector heads. And no…I suppose I have been abusing the cables cause the battery was $10 lol. Always things I plan to mod on my kayak, but that usually means less time on the water, so the fishing wins out.

Yeah, that looks like a cover for the fuse, can just remove it.  Although you might want a fuse if your not putting your battery in a box, if it's 10$ just cut away the corroded part and put a new terminal on, should work fine.

If I’m not putting the battery in a box, is the concern that the battery would short out the head unit, or more worried about the battery?

Here is that fuse housing if the fuse doesnt come out, and check the "frequently bought with" for the fuses (3a fast for mine). I also picked some up at a napa auto parts.

A box protects the battery and the wires from corrosion and shorting, so I never put on a fuse and never have corrosion on my terminals.  If it's exposed, there is a chance for short, which can burn the cables, or destroy the battery.  I've gotten away with using a freezer 1gal zip-lock bag as a simple battery protector with electrical tape to seal the end.  But my preference is a cheap Tupperware product called lock-n-lock.

i would 100% fuse all power connections. There's no reason not to, and the risk of a short is not worth it financially or from a safety perspective.. dielectric grease will stop corrosion.

No harm in using a fuse, good practice and all that.  But it would take a miracle to get a short inside my waterproof battery box to cause an issue, and at that point your talking water inside the box, which a fuse wont help.

It will help keep your wires from turning into a hot knife- absolutely will help either its in or out of the box. you want it as close to the battery as you can get per AYBC code.

I actually had a 7ah lipo battery sit in saltwater for >12 hours still connected to my FF but without a fuse and the wiring is totally fine, but the positive terminal on the battery disintegrated.  Waste of a nice Dakota battery, didn't have it in a waterproof enclosure. A actual short connecting the two wires just doesn't seem likely to happen, which would then cause the wiring to burn up.  But no harm in using them, just never had a problem without them, inside an enclosure.
