Wanted to share a rule I've been using forever in surfing as a way to push your limits in a relatively safe and intelligent way. I've found it applies to kayak fishing pretty well as well. It's nothing new or earth-shatteringly clever, just a simple way to decide whether or not to go out. This is just my personal view on it so take it with a grain of salt and use your own judgement before going out.

Rule: you need at least 2 of these 3 things.
1. A buddy
2. Solid knowledge of the spot
3. Mellow conditions

So:
a) want to go out in a new spot? you need: a buddy and mellow conditions
b) want to go out in big surf / weather? you need: a buddy and a spot you know very well
c) want to go out alone? you need: a spot you know very well and mellow conditions

You're never completely safe in the ocean, regardless of what you do. But I think this helps me define acceptable risk when making the call on whether or not to go.

Hope it helps, cheers.

Love the simplicity of the logic here. Nice, convenient rule of thumb. Thanks !

This is great. I always love the "there are 3 things you want, pick 2" adage.

That is great, great advice. If you put that on a sticker I could put one my kayak I'd buy some to give away.

awesome.

i use the same for Mtb'ing and for Climbing

I add in a fourth:

i don't go solo even if it is mellow when there's likely to be no one else out there
