Hobies copyright or trademark had to expire, right? It looks nearly identical.

The original expired.  But there are plenty of ways around patent infringement.  I think others just didn't feel like taking Hobie's legal team on and they think prop power is just as good.  After all, the Johnson outdoors PDL system is considered almost as fast as a mirage drive, depending on the kayak model.

I thought that chart you published said the PDL was faster.....

I think it was Rob or someone else who posted the chart from that magazine/blog.   I think they're pretty similar, top speed is limited by the hull so it depends on the kayak model.  As long as the drive is efficient enough to get up to hull speed, then they should all be more about dealer support, reliability, and model features.

Yup it was PK who posted this article:
https://rapidmedia.com/kayakangler/categories/9105-pedal-boat-olympics-results.html?utm_source=Kayak+Angler+Magazine&utm_campaign=d7c30548e2-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2018_06_14_04_47_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_603ed3208e-d7c30548e2-90010869

Based upon that, the PDL can get up to 6.2MPH which is really good.  I think some of the hobie models can get up to that speed as well, but not the PA14 that they tested.  Just shows that fins aren't necessarily faster than props.

Well its out and its $1500.  Also the new Jackson BigRig FD looks interesting. Really like the modular floor design.

Only one hatch for storage but it should do well because of it being 12.8 feet and 85lbs

All works published in the United States before 1923 are in the public domain. Works published after 1922, but before 1978 are protected for 95 years from the date of publication. If the work was created, but not published, before 1978, the copyright lasts for the life of the author plus 70 years... So there is no way that Hobie's copyrights have expired on their drive system. They have to change some things to make it different enough to not infringe... stuff I learned from taking 3  business law classes
Integrity first, Service before self and excellence in all we do.

All gave some, some gave all. You will never be forgotten!

Maybe a stupid question...but where can I demo the new Catch 130HD? Do real kayak shops even carry Pelican brand? (As opposed to big box retailers like Dicks or Walmart)

Always wondered.  How is the customer service at Dicks?  they live up to their name?
