I have a 6501C3 (Made in Sweden), needs some TLC, but it could use a good home been sitting on the shelf for a few years now.

I like the Abyss 807 for salmon and use it for halibut. May pick up an 806 for buts though, the 807 is a little heavy.

I still break out the ugly stick tiger lites though, been going strong for 10+ years. I think they make an 802ML.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Orca pattern on kayak to deter sharks
« on: February 20, 2022, 02:31:04 PM »
A pod of orcas killed a blue whale 3 times larger than them. Wow

https://www.npr.org/2022/02/19/1081931774/orcas-take-down-a-blue-whale-proving-theyre-the-apex-predators-of-the-ocean

But what caught my attention in the article is that there has been reports from California that great whites are nowhere to be seen where orcas have been spotted. I always wondered if I should paint a black orca pattern on the button on my Hull. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Apparently orcas are fond of GWS livers...

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Conventional reel recommendation?
« on: September 08, 2021, 06:18:15 PM »
avet sxj g2. one of the greatest reels I have owned.

small and has enough line cap for anything around here. enough drag and you can thumb the spool if you need. my buddy stopped and turned a seal he hooked rockfishing with his.

very easy to take apart and put back together, it is a simple reel. has excellent maintenance videos on yt. On surf landings I have turned it into a coffee grinder on multiple occasions and after a breakdown and clean it is smooth again.

+1 for the sxj. Paired with a Shimano Trevala has been my go to for rockfish/ling fishing for a number of years now. The narrow spool is easy to thumb, no need for a level wind. Had a Cardiff 301, great real but sold it, and still have a Daiwa Lexa 300 LH which I love but prefer the sxj for RF. If you don't service your own reels, ( I suck at it, wind up breaking more than I fix) I send mine back to Avet every couple of years, for $30+ cleaned, greased and new washers good to go. Still have an old Abu 5501, great reel too, caught my biggest halibut ever on that thing. Good luck and tight lines!

I'll likely be headed up to Petaluma this week to pick up some gear for my wife at Red Triangle behind Clavey Sports. We're in Richmond, could do and East Bay handoff.

Thanks for the reminder Eric, haven't contributed for a couple years and you got me motivated!

For anyone on the fence, bonus karma point for signing up! Haven't fished all year, paid in last night and promptly paddled out this morning and caught my first fish of the year.
