Alex (Alien) and E2G (Eugene) took me and my son and Marmite (Doug) on our first ocean trip 10 years ago at MBK. One of my favorite trips of all time.

It wasn't pretty but the Warriors find a way to win.

What do you need at this point? Molly and I will be there early to help with breakfast and set up. What time should we be there?

I grew up in LA and back in the day, the best burger was the "original Tommy's Hamburgers" double chili cheese burger. They have many locations now but the original shack on the corner of Beverly an Rampart is the best.

Looks a lot tastier than your last creation :)

:smt005 :smt005 :smt005 Cooking is a journey my friend. And yes, looks way better than your Lassen trout. You should get some lessons from Keith http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=58352.0. Maybe he wil tell you where to get those secret Vietnamese packets of ingredients.  :smt044

If you want to catch YFT, go on a 2 day, but the first week in July is hit or miss unless you go 3-5 days. YT is a better bet in early July. You can do two 3/4 day trips for less money than a 2 Day trip. Personally I think YT fishing is more fun because they are suckers for iron and they fight really hard.

The best bang for the buck right now is 3/4 day yellowtail and I love the Mission Bell. If the el nino holds, a fair shot at YFT also. Check the fish counts (Mission Bell, San Diego, Mahalito, Chubasco). Book early because they are the best.

If you want to catch something, I would hire a guide. The blue ribbon streams get a lot of pressure and the trout are really smart.

Safety First / Re: Bought a shark shield

The SS doesn't affect sonar. It doesn't seem to affect rockfish but I never fished shallow water. Spearos use it and it doesn't seem to scare off fish.

I bought a SS after Adam got hit at the Bean. It probably won't stop the initial missle attack but will probably repel drive byes. Our kayaks protect us really well from the initial attack unlike surf boards. It's what happens after the initial attack that you have to worry about and where the SS might save your life. In Adam's attack, the shark came back after the initial attack for second helpings. I think if you can afford it, I think it is worth owning, however, dollar for dollar a PLB is probably a better investment as far as expensive safety equipment. PLB's have saved thousands of lives and you can use it hiking also.

I stopped using my SS several years ago and recently gave it to a friend who fishes Davenport frequently. I don't fish SMC, Capitola and Leffingwell anymore and usually fish with a buddy. Lot's of less sharky areas to catch rockfish.

Nice Alan. I fished Virg's for years when they ran trips out of San Simeon back in the 90's. I still fish them once a year when I go to Cambria for an annual college reunion. Throw swim baits off the bow and kill the lings. I don't enter the jackpot though, it would be taking candy from babies.  :smt005 :smt005 :smt005

General Fishing Tips / Re: Leader down for lingcod?
« on: May 26, 2015, 09:21:18 AM »
I use 30 lb power pro on the mainline. 30- 0r 40 lb. blue label seaguar fluoro. I like the seaguar its really tough. I fish very close to the bottom for big lings. I also never use any swivels to attach the main line to the leader. An uni to uni knot works best for me. If I have to break off it always breaks at the palomar knot I use at the terminal end of the leader where I have a black duo-lock snap for quick jig head changes. If I have to break off I wrap the mainline around the fish bonker then reel down with the rod vertical. Wait for the swell to lift the boat and bingo it breaks easy. Get used to tying the uni to uni on the water it only takes a few minutes. If you got sensitive hands that cut easy, Id just stay home and use lotion. hahahaha :smt006 :smt044

Craig - I use the same setup on my swimbait casting setup except I directly tie the leader to the lure with a San Diego jam knot instead of a palomar and don't use a terminal duolock. You are correct that the line tends not to break at the double uni but it is not because it is stronger than a palomar or SD jam knot, it breaks from abrasion. I use the double uni because I am casting through the knot and the double uni does not hang up in the guides. I use rubber bands to manage the leaders. You will recognize some of your old friends in my tackle box. Scott

RCG's aren't leader shy so fluorocarbon is overkill, IMO. Save your fluoro for tuna. Use good hardware and they won't let you down. 99% of the time, the leader will break not the hardware. Rinse your connectors after every trip and they last for years.

40-50# braid main line with a SS duolock snap swivel. Each lure  has a 2-3' 30# mono leader with a SS barrow swivel at the end. Never have to tie on the water. I use Berkeley Big Game mono for my leaders.
