General Talk / The Raptor: NicksYak's Sweet New Ride
« on: October 12, 2014, 03:44:18 PM »
I knew I would have a Raptor in my life. Spent a day OTW in a demo fishing with Jim Martin (a pleasure in itself) and committed to it before we got ashore. Fortunately, a couple of hours after we launched in SC, the wind, swells, and chop picked up, so that I could see how she performed in those conditions. WOW: I knew she would be stable, but I had no idea she would also be fast and maneuverable. Loved it.

I picked mine up in Jim's Watsonville shop, and he made sure she met his rigid, high standards before he let me take off with her. We are waiting for a comfort seat from his supplier, and that is the only change I'll need for her; for my needs, she was ready to go, as is.

BTW: we each caught Lings and witnessed a terrific whale show very close to us. I am a happy man.

Sorry, Porky. Anyone got ideas about how to help our brother Porky and family? I'm not good at organizing, but I can help as asked or suggested.

General Talk / Re: Best paddling boat for speed...for the money
« on: September 15, 2014, 02:10:29 PM »
   What's the hurry ?   :smt002

Hope I don't appear to be argumentative here, but I was thinking something similar. How essential is speed in a SOT rigged for fishing? I would think ease of paddling and glide would be important and tracking, but to what degree is speed in some measure, like what 3 mph Vs 3.1 mph? or some other factor a primary issue, as it seems to be here?

I have an Eddyline Caribbean 12, and I think it is fast enough, but is it any faster than the OK T13 I used to have? I can't tell. Both are a pleasure to paddle. For that matter, I paddled a Raptor for about 45 mins once and found that to be a pleasure to paddle as well, I assume the Raptor is slower, but I didn't calculate the speed difference, and I doubt that relative speed differences would affect how many fish I catch.

My main issue is to enjoy my day paddling and hopefully catch some fish and not struggle paddling back to the launch site. Speed? I would get a sea touring SIK and just haul ass for the sheer pleasure of it.

Just MHO, hope I don't offend.

General Talk / Re: Boycott Annie's brand food, please!
« on: September 13, 2014, 08:14:14 AM »
Thanks for posting this, AlexB. Wife and I glutten free and organic, mostly, for about three years now and we both feel much better -- really life changing for the Mrs. Have liked Annie's products and still have some on our shelf, but no more. The effect of my individual boycott of GM products, by itself, won't effect them much, but I will feel good about my effort, and who knows? from such small, individual steps a small army might move and grow. Thanks again.

Cast iron has been part of my cookware for decades. I'll be passing my collection onto my children, who also love it. You have some treasures there.

I miss that feature on my 12. Used it often on my OK 13. Don't see how it could be retrofitted on a 12, but I wish it could. Still though, love my Caribbean.
