Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Waterproof phone cases
« on: August 03, 2022, 11:43:40 AM »
FWIW i throw my samsung in my cycling jersey back pocket 3-4 days a week for 2-6 hour riders and sweat all over the thing.  i don't cover the ports, nothing.  On my older phones they'd last 1-2 years before they'd be so damaged they would fail.  Since the two releases i haven't had any issues. sure the ports get wet, but with the hydrophobic coating once that dries its fine- no build up on the ports.

I can't think of a harder life than that...

just a floaty case for me, and a rinse with fresh water at the end of the day (if i remember).  Phone is already "waterproof"  - samsung s21

If you’re looking for a hard asset to save your hard earned $ in, I’d highly suggest learning about bitcoin.

Happy to educate and debate!

General Talk / Re: What pound braid on downrigger?
« on: July 15, 2022, 09:46:05 AM »
interesting idea of putting on lighter braid for less resistance.  You could probably run 65-80 as the main line, then put a few feet of 150 just in case you want to pull by hand on the line...

I noticed a lot less blowback when i switched to braid on my boat (pulling 12# balls)...i'm sure it would be really noticeable trolling in a kayak.  Always ran SS cable on my AI for some reason (probably bc i am inherently lazy and didn't feel like switching it out)

General Talk / Re: Downrigger install - port or starboard?

I had to put my manual DR on my AI on the starboard, bc on port it was totally awkward to wind up the ball

Recipes / Re: Poke serving question.

Super easy to make wonton wrapper chips.

Cut the wrappers into triangles, grease a cookie sheet, spray oil the wrappers on top, add some seasalt, bake at 400 for 6 minutes. Serve that instead of the regular chips with the POke.  I've been doing it with my BFT last few times, and it is a total hit.

if you under cook some of the wrappers they'll be nearly white, and overcook you'll get brown (i'm talking just a couple minutes); the brown ones have a really nice nutty taste, and the contrast of the two colors is appealing

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Kayak or Boat?
« on: July 12, 2022, 05:22:23 AM »
Oh man...kayakfishing is way, way less expensive.
Even with my hobie ai, it was less.

My CC is 20 feet. Cost about 5-8x what my AI cost...it is super fuel efficient,  but I can still burn 8-10 gallons on a salmon trip. Registration, insurance, maintenance,  it all adds up

If I was trying to keep the costs similar, say choose between a small aluminum or fiberglass or a kayak, I'd stay with the kayak. You can go out in a broader range of conditions. Sure you are limited to the one place you choose for the day, and the range sucks...

Boating is no less gratifying, etc, etc...just different.  Like riding a motorcycle vs a bicycle.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Big Boats around tiny kayaks.
« on: July 08, 2022, 01:49:38 PM »
I've got my little 20foot CC now, and i have to say kayakers are hard as shit to see- especially the ones with green or dark color yaks, worse when there's a swell. Shocking how hard it is to see us. SUPs are way easier, even if the person is kneeling!

Also, a lot of us are f'heads. I probably was too. bunch of boats working a bait ball, all rotating clockwise and running more or less parallel to each other...then here comes the kayaker cutting across everybody.  Or dropping crab pots right in the transit lane (even seen them IN the jaws at HMB)...WTF?

That said, I do my very best to watch out and check on folks, and I'll call ya on 69 if I see you usually.

the commie guys are fishing and they have a really, really long lead time to turn...towing all that gear. Same with tugboats or ferrys...Ferrys f'ing fly- clocked on at 50mph on GPS going to work.

I've lost quite a few friends over the years to accidents, sickness, and self inflicted accidents. There's a few I think about pretty darn often. And one or two that sometime during a drive under wide open skies bring tears to my eyes.

A good one, that passed from a stupid, avoidable accident liked to quote the most honored of philosophers, "take two dinner roles, and pile your plate high, because on the buffet of life there are no second helpings" - Fred Flintstone

General Fishing Tips / Re: Don’t forget about your bait
« on: June 15, 2022, 01:17:20 PM »
When i was like 18 i forgot about a box of squid in the back of my Corolla. Think it was probably 4-5 days later when i couldn't stand the smell in the car (lived in the Sunset in SF)...when i opened the trunk i nearly puked.
in the end i had to throw away all the carpeting in there, and bleach everything multiple times to get the smell under control.
it never really went away

General Talk / Re: Best place to buy ice?
« on: June 13, 2022, 11:21:59 AM »
Pier 47, across from J&Ps there's a place that has shaved ice 20 buck min for quite a lot- no real idea how much that is, but it filled my fish box.  When i get live bait i'll get ice there too. (did it saturday).
think they're open 5-9am

i had a prius V for nearly a decade, that thing could make it far more places than i thought.
my street has 200yds of 24%, its pavement, but even when soaking wet there's no issue.

Lawyers are awesome...
But CESA's Fish and Game Code, which establishes the basis on which plants and animals are protected, defines "fish" as "a wild fish, mollusk, crustacean, invertebrate, amphibian, or part, spawn, or ovum of any of those animals."

Invertebrate covers a whole lot of ground
