The big for me was the fixed rudder, I am in the process of converting to a rear retractable. This has also got me thinking about adding a Bixpy. Yeah I said it.  There are days when I am out in the sound and I am never going to overcome the current.  Or when I am going for flounder near the Nisqually delta and can't stay on point for crap. It won't make it a speed demon, but it will keep me where I want to be or  allow me to troll and keep my hands free.

General Talk / Re: Smoked Brisket Advice...
« on: April 30, 2021, 11:36:23 AM »
I can't give you a lot of info, but what I can give you comes from Kev's school of Combat BBQ:

In foreign country that doesn't have supermarkets like you are used, any cut of meat works.

Incoming fire has the right of way.

Keep the flames and smoke low, don't let the bad guys think they scored a hit!

Don't smoke pork during Ramadan, (for some reason the locals get really upset) (No I didn't smoke pork during Ramadan, I may be dumb, but I am not stupid).

Don't smoke/grill/BBQ in a dust storm.

Never BBQ near the helipad, your grill will blow away or those bastard pilots will take your stuff and fly away.

Fuel, what ever you can get is good enough.

Don't BBQ near the ammo bunker or fuel depot.

Keep your rifle handy, you may need to fend off a wild Hyena. (don't laugh, we had the damn things)

Take picture of your self and the troops with the Sauce from the BBQ company that sent you free stuff!

Always BBQ on the day the Mess section is really making something awful (that is almost every day), you will never get any complaints!

I hope those are useful to you, or at least entertaining.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Fishing Kayak paddles.
« on: April 30, 2021, 11:21:59 AM »
There are some tables online for paddle length. But length is not the only thing, blade material and design come into play. Are you a high angle or low angle paddler?    I have tried Bending Branches, Werner, Stealth winged blade for fishing, and some other brand brand I can't recall.  The one I like a lot is the Bending Branches fishing model which extends from 230-240cm for fishing.  If I am rec paddling/touring with GF its the Werner Camano. I carry the Stealth for my back up as it is the shortest and lightest (it weighs nothing), and when I am worn out I reach for that one. A side benefit of the Stealth is the huge wall locker of storage space that come with them.  I can throw the paddle in their and an 8 foot rod and they are competing for space.  I found a guide for you to look at. Don't forget the width of your yak comes into play as well.  https://www.bassgrab.com/how-to-choose-a-kayak-fishing-paddle/

General Fishing Tips / Re: Using a freshwater real in salt water
« on: April 30, 2021, 11:11:55 AM »
I will second the Abu reels.  They really do well for inshore fishing. Stay away from the made in China ones, they are not going to hold up and besmirch the Abu name.  I flush the crap out of my reels both fresh and salt water to keep them safe.

Stealth / Re: Backrest for Stealth

I have their back rest, and I am not a big fan of it.  I also use a Hobie inflatable seat pad, and I like that  combo's with the back rest. But I plan on getting a better seat.

Rod length in a Stealth, well I can say my 555 can take a anything I have except my 12 foot surf fishing rod (wait it can take that because it is 2 piece rod). I think one of my rods I don't use for kayak fishing is 8' 10 or something like that, and it fit in there if I recall.

Okay, as the lifelong NE Pats fan, it is both great and hard to watch TB12 doing his thing down south.  Unlike many NE Pats Fans, I am good with it. Few of us would turn down a great opportunity if it was presented to us. NE went cheap and BB doesn't want to give up control, Tampa wanted to win so they accommodated having him. The pay off was sluggish at first, then it clicked together and the rest is history. Now don't get me wrong, NE and Tampa play each other next season. Sorry Tom, but my love for the Pat's goes back decades before you were there.

Now for something funny, well to me anyways, GF and I don't have TV, we watch Net Flix and Amazon Prime stuff. When I was working my way through school writing papers for class, I would go to ESPN and click on the game, then click on game cast and just watch the computer information as to what was happening.  Well yesterday ESPN had the game in Spanish, so I said well got to be better than game cast.   I learned a word in Spanish yesterday, seemed every time Mahomes threw the ball I would hear; "Incompleto!"  Seems I heard that a lot.  lol

TB12 may be the goat of Football, But until someone gets 12 championships in any sport, Bill Russell is the Man to beat at 11!   Also no doubt the Chief's were exposed, and Tampa was making fools of them. Mahomes should of gotten an award for most yards run in the backfield.

I saw this on a Stealth forum once: "Friends don't let Friends peddle," another one was "Real fishermen paddle, not peddle" or words to that affect.

Get your Safety Gear first and foremost. Keep it simple starting out, go out in a pond and roll a few times and practice self rescue.  Learn how to paddle correctly (trust me, if you learn this skill over all the others, will make your days far more enjoyable). Go out with experienced people. Assume every time you are on the water, you are going in, and dress accordingly.  The XYZ fishing rod may be the best thing to catch water species you are after, but won't do crap for you if you can't call for help. So that whistle and radio are you the next best thing to your PFD.  I forgot who it was caught lingcod with their kids Barbie doll years ago, so the latest, coolest thing can easily be shown up by a kids doll.
