Hobie Kayaks / Re: Hobie Quest = Sean / Scwafish
« on: September 29, 2008, 11:11:52 AM »
I have a an older Quest, and have been happy with it.  In Texas the wet seat/ wet feat thing was not a big deal, in fact I never really bothered me.  Then my fiancee and I went paddling one day after I moved out here and my feet were numb (not used to this cold bay water).  I fixed that problem quickly, and bought a pair of divers/surfer neoprene socks.  I find the boat to be really stable and well made.  I got caught on a strainer on the Brazos river (in Texas) after some heavy rain fall and I was tossed but the boat was hung up and was taking a lot of heavy pounding from the river, and it didn't buckle or flex. Not as fast as some other SOT's but I have been happy with it.  I like the fact that even though my quest was an early model all the newer Hobbie parts fit it.

General Fishing Tips / Fishing Reel: Ocean City 965
« on: September 29, 2008, 09:48:53 AM »
I was talking to my brother in law yesterday, he lives in Rhode Island and is a Firefighter  and works with my dad in his auto repair shop on his off days.  He had a customer come in and give him a couple of old reels. One was a Penn 155, the other was an Ocean City 965 (anything fishing he will scarf in a second).   The 965 says it was made in Philly.  Does anyone know if this was a company that was part of Penn?  Or has any info or knows where to get parts for it?  I am heading back east and my Brother in Law is giving them to me as he is a freshwater fisherman and has no interest in these reels.  He has nothing invested in them, says they work and click but other than that he didn't know to much about them.

Why not just use two 6 volts and draw off one to power the tank and then wire in the two to get 12 volts for the FF? Saves weight

Years ago there was a dive special on tv, had some guys off of the Great Barrier Reef trying different things.  There were 2 of interest.  One was a chain mail for divers, the other was a wet suit that looked like a poisonous snake off the reef.  It was some sort of snake even sharks fear, it was nothing more than black and white stripes.  Kind of looked like a wet suit for convicts.  They had a dummy with the suit on and every time they put in a school of sharks they vacated the area.  If I recall I think they tried it on a Great White and it left as well.

I like it, but a stainless nylock on the end would make sure it never came apart when you needed it the most, or go with two nuts at the top.  I work on motorcycles as a hobby as well, and try to use good nylock nuts when ever possible.

I use an old army flight bag, it will hold more weight than I can carry, there cheap even new.  They last damn near forever.  The one I use has been with me for 20 years, has been to Iraq for a year, numerous field Ex's over the years.  Plastic boxes, have always been a let down unless they are the real heavy duty ones, than they weigh more than their worth.  When there not in use they fold up nicely. And for cleaning, just go down to the local wash place  and throw in there, or hose it down and throw it over a fence to dry.

So after reading these posts, I am getting a conflicting message.  What is the norm for tackle size here?  Am I looking at somewhere in the 15-25 lb line class?  Some of these posts here and else where make reference to using 20lb and 300 yard capacity spools.  The Abu's are looking at lighter line and smaller capacity.  Being new to the area , I am going to confess my ignorance to the different species out here so what is considered the norm?

Thanks again to everyone for your posts!

Thanks for the local support guys. :smt010
Try Fisherman's Warehouse, Hi's, or any other local tackle shop
and you'll find more than your share of quality left handed reels.
I also use the 5501C3 ($69.99 at Fisherman's) and haven't had any problems.
Whichever you choose please buy it from a local retailer, one who has supported the
local fishing for many years and will know more about the products than just the
page it's on and the price it's on sale for.

Thanks Yakhoper,

I try to support the local's.  My Dad is mechanic back east with a two man shop.  So I know what it is like for him being the small guy.

I went by HI's new store, unfortunately it hasn't opened yet.  I did get to talk to one of the guys there setting up the store and they said they hope to be open in October.  I haven't been down to San Jose in a while but should be down in that area some time soon.  I also went by and the Kayak shop in Redwood city across the street from REI.  They had a new OK Trident 15 in there, nice boat!

I am leaning towards the Penn 321 GTi, I am getting back into saltwater fishing after a long break.  Ocean kayaking is new to me, and I think getting used to surf, big waves and the like are also new so, I would hate it if I lost one of those expensive rod and reel set ups.  Thanks for everyone's help!

I have no problem with that.  What about Okuma, to be honest I have never really heard of them till I moved out here.

Just get a right handed reel and hold the rod upside down.      :smt002

Okay, I'm kidding.

I have tried that once; it was a terrible failure.  I grew up on the East Coast, and lived in Florida for a while and it seemed everywhere you went you saw the big ole Gold Penn reels for any type of bait casting reels.  I have never owned one, but I used to go out with my grandfather hyad much older Penn's, and come to think of it that was pretty much what he ever used.  But for kayak fishing I am thinking that those honker Penn's would be over kill?

Greetings everyone, I am new to the area and new to kayak fishing, but not new to fishing.  I have a question for the left handed folks out there.  Can anyone recommend a good left handed reel for light salt water?  I have used spinning reels forever, and every time I go to look for a lefty bait caster  I never find one.  Any recommendations?

Thanks
