General Talk / Re: covid vaccine experience?
« on: March 17, 2021, 05:18:02 PM »
Figured I would add my recent experience with the first shot from Pfizer.  First and foremost, I went to the new Kaiser vaccine center down on 10th St in Oakland.  Class act.  I was in and out in under 18 minutes with the 15 min observation period.

Painless shot, moved my arm all day and had no arm pain.  Next day my arm was actually quite sore.  The more I used it, the better, but if I didnt use it for an hour it was quite tender.  After 3rd day no arm pain.

I had no other symptoms of anything.  Slept great, lots of energy, no headaches or anything odd.

My fiance had Moderna and was actually quite sick for 2 days with her second shot.  She had to take it off from work it was so bad.  Pfizer is supposedly not as severe.

I guess I should mention I'm 37.  I've been noticing a distinct pattern amongst friends and family that the younger you are, the stronger your immune response is on the 2nd shot.  My folks and friends above 60 yrs old have all had almost zero symptoms on the first and second shot of Moderna and Pfizer, except a sore arm.

My friends in their early 30's and late 20's seem to be hit the hardest, having to take 2-3 days off work.  I'm due again April 1st, quite curious what happens.

Would have loved to go today.  Work.

I will be camping at Stillwater this weekend, Sunday looks like it might end up decent enough if the wind stays down.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Anyone ever fish Nicasio Reservoir?

Back in the day there were a lot of bass there, it was fun.  Last couple times I went, it was dead and online reports seem to mirror that, plus the water level was/is quite low.  No boats.

Whoa, I was crossing the SR Bridge earlier this week heading into Richmond and thought I saw this; figured I must be hallucinating.  I guess I need to listen to the radio once in awhile.

General Talk / Re: Monterey area Great White Sharks
« on: February 12, 2021, 09:12:43 AM »
Why are people worried when they are in kayaks?  I've never understood that, like is there an inherent fear the shark will somehow capsize, and then attack the struggling person?

One of a few direct experiences from NCKA members alone:  https://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=93203.msg1051246#msg1051246

Unreal.  I've never heard of that.  Most of the time I'm in the water I'm scuba diving, and I'm looking for GWS (they're basically impossible to encounter with scuba gear, far too loud, and there's never been an attack).

Now freediving with sub 10ft visibility, dead fishes on the keeper?  I get worried, for sure.  Especially around Jenner.  Definitely investing in a sharkshield.

I'm predicting some higher-than-normal deaths if they open ab season.  People who haven't been in the water for years, and higher shark counts.

Kayak Diving and Spearfishing / Re: Spearfishing 1/30 Sonoma Coast
« on: February 08, 2021, 06:06:08 PM »
Conditions were too good this Sunday not to scuba.  Did some dives at Gerstle Cove, spotted some serious ling and cabs, but got too exhausted to head back out with the gun.  Made me consider stashing my gun at the end of the reserve to grab something on the way back in.

Good luck out there.

By the way, where do you get wave energy info?  Thanks!

Surf forecasts generally have wave energy.  Unfortunately, things were still pretty churned up and visibility wasn't good above 20 ft.  Decided to just shore fish, and had no luck with the fish, so took home a cooler of urchins and some crab.

CA Regulations / Re: Catch and Release Rockfish During Closure
« on: January 29, 2021, 01:10:35 PM »
I guess I did not really comprehend the definition of "TAKE", because to my mind and ears that means...take.  As in possess.

It's also a bit murky to me since I incidentally catch and release a rockfish here and there when drifting for halibut when there's some structure nearby.   It's unavoidable to some degree.

But makes sense, thanks for clarifying.  I figured closure meant closure, and yet I wondered why they weren't a little more explicit.

If you're fishing from shore, you probably could do that. Rockfish closure is only for boat-based anglers.

Shore based is open all year round, as is spear.  If I catch a legal lingcod from shore, that sure ain't being released back into the ocean.  =)

CA Regulations / Catch and Release Rockfish During Closure
« on: January 29, 2021, 11:39:15 AM »
Forgive the potentially silly question but are there regulations prohibiting me from targeting lingcod (and other rockfish), but catching and releasing, during the seasonal closure?  For whatever reason I found it tough to find a definitive answer about this.

Since there is incidental rockfish catch that gets released when going for species that are still open, I sort of assume that there can't really be?

I'm trying to get my fiance more experienced with jigging from her yak before the season opens back up and I wouldn't mind enjoying some sport, but don't want to push the boundaries or do anything frowned upon.  I would be bending my barbs.

Thanks,

Conditions look amazing tomorrow (Saturday 1/30).  We are headed out to either Gerstle, Stillwater, Timber, or Fort Ross, still deciding; probably Timber as the swell looks sub 300kj and shortest haul across the beach.

I'll be spearfishing, although we might bring some traps as well, or toss just some snares in between dives in the sand.  Will be on CH69.  Red Vibe Shearwater and a grey camo Jackson Cuda, yellow PFDs.

Going to be a lazy start; shooting for 8am, but in all likelihood and the way things have been going, more like on the water by 10 or 11am.

Anyone else planning to be out?
