Awesome belt! AOTY committee has a high-fashion sense. You should definitely wear it for any meetups.

Nice bass!

I think August and September have the best weather/least wind and should be tops. Then October and July. I would also put November ahead of May. Who doesn't like a crab/rockfish combo?

Thanks for all your work on this. I agree it adds another level to the kayak fishing obsession. Variety is the spice of life and targeting 10 species categories gives so many options on any given fishing day.

I have a nice spotted bass from 1/7 waiting to be entered. Does the 2 week rule apply or is there a grace period for January?

On species, I could see separating crappie from other panfish and giving a little less to crappie and a little more points to other panfish. Tons of 15"/180pt crappies out there. And it would be nice to see Sac Perch, red ears or huge bluegill targeted as an alternate for panfish points.

AOTY / Re: Electric Motors in AOTY

I'm against it. For certain fish it's a huge advantage. For others, not so much. But generally I see a motorized kayak as more similar to a motor boat in spirit than a non-motorized kayak. Although when I'm fishing with motorized kayak guys I don't judge and get along just fine.
I'm okay with sail kayaks being included in the non-motorized division.

But if we really need to bring in motorized, maybe they start with a minus 100pts or -10% of points to try to equalize things.

Congrats to Poupsmith! (Technically, aren’t we all poop-smiths?) I think the salmon closure helped me since I have bad luck with them. It would be good to see more entries- my 23” Mackinaw shouldn’t have been the largest.

For me, kayaking on the ocean is all about what my body and the simple machines of platform and paddle can achieve.  I've been lots of miles from port and had to work hard for hours straight, against current and wind, to get back safely to port.  Experiences like that are invigorating, and pushing yourself in those situations isn't just life changing, it's living!

This.  (Although the struggle is so much more rewarding sans skunk.)
Personally I have no desire to get a motor, but it doesn't bother me when someone in a group is motorized. If it became a trend and the majority were motorized, then it might suck for me.
If my knees or legs go out, then I may have to rethink it.
I pedaled the Lynx about 8 miles at Hogan on Sunday, then pedaled my new Mt bike at Rockville for a few hours on Monday. My legs were feeling it and it felt good.

Fishing Tournaments and Events / Re: 2024 MBK Derby Poll

I had a hard time changing, putting kayak and gear away, etc. and hitting the potluck and raffle last time. An extra 1/2 hour between weigh-in and potluck/raffle would be good.
Food truck could be a good option, but dealing with cash, etc. could be a pain. Maybe the entry fee could be bumped $10 and include a food ticket to the food truck.

I'm sure it would add too much difficulty, but carving up a winning halibut and making fish tacos would really be epic. Maybe have a backup in a cooler in case none were caught. I'll bet Todd and/or Sonny could make that happen. It would be an amazing consolation prize for those of us who hali-skunk.

"No Boat or Kayak launch before 8:00am or after 9pm, to ensure quiet time for all guests."  :smt011
I did not see any enforcement of that, at least not for kayaks. I think as long as your are relatively quiet, there is no issue.

I camped and fished there last summer and it seemed plenty lively for me, with lots of people drinking and talking around campfire. It didn’t feel oppressive in the least. There was even a late night drunken argument/fight at 1:30am. I really don’t need karaoke in my camping/fishing experience. I’m looking forward to fishing it again this summer.

General Fishing Tips / Delta Tide Video
« on: January 12, 2024, 08:50:22 AM »

Alan Fong does a video on tides that is helpful.

I feel vindicated that he explains that the tide charts are often off. When I used to do a lot of poke poling on the coast they seemed spot on but I’ve found the change to often be delayed quite a bit in the bay and delta beyond what the charts say.

Thanks for the report! How is launching from Markley? I have never tried it (even though it is probably my closest launch).
Very easy but kind of pricey at $20. But I think it’s $10 or $15 on weekdays. I could see it being less nice if it were busier with powerboats.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Berryessa 1/7 report
« on: January 10, 2024, 12:50:48 PM »
I decided to try  Berryessa for some trout, maybe salmon, maybe bass, maybe the huge bluegill that were reported at 50’.
Launched at Markley. The bait balls were mostly 40’ to 100’ deep. I dragged a spee D  shiner on a DR at about 50’ and a streamer with a wiggle disk on a sinking line on a fly rod. I may not have had enough speed @ 1.8 - 2.4 mph.
I picked up one decent 17” bass fairly early but moved on looking for trout. Didn’t get any other bites. Tried a frog flatfish which works at Pyramid but no hits.
One guy was getting some big bass according to the radio.
On the return I dropped a worm down for bluegill but couldn’t find any.
Pretty nice weather and no skunk.

Only 50? I thought you fished more than 100 days last year  :smt044 :smt044

55 - slightly more than once a week.

Just bought a midweek season pass so I will have to allot more days to skiing.
And I hope to get more days on the motorcycle and mountain bike in.
So I'm hoping to still get in at least 40 days of fishing.
It is the one activity I can include Mabel in.
