I use magnets to pull stuff around in the hull.

I recommend not having line under 10lb test. I think every large trout I have caught in the EBRPD has had broken off hooks some with light line leaders.

Introductions / Re: Greetings from Fairfield

Welcome, just this last Saturday I mixed a can of tuna with a can of corn, and caught a limit of kokanee.

Wow what a blast today at Sly Creek. I was ready to head out when Kevin showed up so he pointed out the way to go. Right off the bat I landed a nice brown, and then for awhile I only had a few bites. Eventually Kevin caught up, and I followed him, as he explained that we just needed to keep going until found the Kokanee schools.

Eventually we did, and it was nonstop bites, and lost fish. I ended up with my limit of 5 10-11” and a rainbow by the time headed in.

A big thank you to Kevin for showing me the way to my first Kokanee.

We are still waiting on the In Season Adjustments to the standard regulations just published. F&W will present recommendations to the PSMFC, and then they make recommendations to the F&G commission for final approval. Still awhile before we will know what the season will be.

General Talk / Re: West Marine clearance — Daiwa Lexa 100 LC
« on: February 27, 2024, 05:00:53 PM »
I picked up another Lexa 100 LC, and a Takota 400 LC. They have lots of reels, and rods on clearance right now.

Also, you may want to start out in freshwater to get comfortable with the layout, and dealing with smaller fish.

if I could start my kayak adventure over, I would skip the motor

I definitely thought of you when I wrote my reply, Mark.  Never felt you needed it at all, and that's the only type of person I'd want to have a motor.  Another multi-trip client on that list is Schwegg.  There are others.

I'm not slamming anyone who chooses a motor for the yak.  I am definitely wanting to get my advisory out there though, that using a motor if it will get you past your capabilities to return without it = bad news.

Hey Eric, on the times we have been out together I only used the motor once. The reason I used it was because you kept telling me what a powerful kayaker Davethesynthguy is. After a limit of rock fish you suggested we try for some halibut, and I caught three of those. I was beat even with the motor, and like you said Dave was still going strong. I think we were on the water from 7-4. Looking forward to the next time.

I use really large swim baits, or slow pitch jigs so I’m hoping this type of setup will work:

I’ll carry some extra weight just in case.

Similar distrust of the science used to determine fishing regulations is happening in other areas as well. This article is worth a read:

General Fishing Tips / Re: Kayak loading on tailgate spoiler
« on: February 05, 2024, 06:25:27 AM »
I do have an older Yakima round rack, and a Thule square rack. They both have loading bars that extend to the side for loading. The mounting clips would need to be changed for your vehicle if available. Free

I am using the Thule Hulivator now.

On one of my past vehicles with an automatic hatch lift I was able to turn it off  so I could open manually. Worth checking the owners manual to see if that’s an option with the Odyssey.

CA Regulations / Re: REPORT -2024 Nearshore Rockfish Season Survey
« on: February 03, 2024, 07:16:53 AM »
If NorCal doesn’t stand for Northern California what does it stand for? And if it stands for something else why is the AOTY limited to Northern California?

“Waterway Rule - All fish entered must be caught within the northern and eastern California borders (the entire waters of Lake Tahoe and Topaz Lake are allowed) and north of the southern borders of the following counties: Monterey, Kings, Tulare and Inyo. Fish caught from waterways with restricted access to the public, such as members-only or private waterways or aquaculture operations are not allowed. Fish caught from waters where anglers have to pay on a per fish basis, such as trout farms, are not allowed.”
