For Sale / Re: Crab trap marker buoys
« on: October 05, 2021, 05:05:59 PM »
Very nice.  So this clips onto the end of my main buoy in a box trap?  If I’m using conical ambush traps I do not think the main line needs the additional marker?  Better do my homework ... :smt006

Correct.  Only required for non-hoop traps.  However, as LoletaEric noted, he likes these even for his hoops so he can get a quick indicator for current direction.  The longline clip would conveniently clip right above or below the main buoy on the existing line.

For Sale / Crab trap marker buoys

Retrofit your current traps to be legal with the new 2021 marker buoy requirements!  This initial pilot is intended to gauge community interest.  If interest is high, I will order supplies to make more and continue to make these.  For now, there are 15 total for sale.

These 3"x5" red marker buoys are spliced onto yellow, floating, 3-strand polypropylene line with a longline clip at the end for attaching to your main line.  The buoy is retained on the running end by a wall & crown knot and back splice for a friction fit with a stopper.  The longline clip is spliced on via an eye splice.  The longline clips are stainless steel and the float & polypropylene line are UV resistant.

$10 each with $2 of each sale being donated to Heroes on the Water NorCal Chapter.

Pick-up in San Francisco or arrange NCKA Express or USPS Flat Rate.

Attached to main line:

PM me or reply in this thread.  If the initial 15 run out, I'll update with plans to make more.

General Talk / Re: New Dungeness Crab Marker buoy requirements

Does anyone have thoughts on if this applies to hoop nets?  I just see reference to “traps”.  I fish off a SUP & drop hoops nets during Dungy season.

From another thread:

From my understanding this new regulation of license and red buoy is for crab traps only, not needed for hoop nets (including the ambush hoop nets)?

Correct.  The ambush type hoop nets are "Type B Hoop Nets" per Title 14 CCR, § 29.80(b) and not a "crab trap" per Title 14 CCR, § 29.80(c).  The regulations around the validation fee and the add'l red 3x5 marker buoy are applicable under Title 14 CCR, § 29.80(c).  You can read the approved changes and the specific language here: https://nrm.dfg.ca.gov/FileHandler.ashx?DocumentID=195187&inline

Does anyone know the reason behind the new requirement to add a 5" x 3" marker buoy to the main buoy of crab traps?

https://cdfwmarine.wordpress.com/2021/09/24/new-trap-regulations-for-recreational-crabbing-in-california/

I can't believe how expensive these small buoys can be. I found a good deal on a 12-pack of 4" x 2" but that doesn't meet the size requirement. I'm considering the following options:

1. Buy/use 4" x 2" marker buoys. They are not the full required size, but I think they demonstrate respect for the rule and a good effort ;)

2. Cutting up an oversize red pool noodles to make small buoys.

Thoughts?

I'm currently splicing up a pilot batch of buoys with line and line clips for $10/ea to add to your existing pots with ease.  I will post a for sale thread early next week if you're interested.  Limited quantities while I feel out the marketability, but high potential that I do them more consistently thereafter.

Hmm, not sure what happened there - I do not have a subscription, but it let me read it. If I knew it was gonna paywall, I wouldn't have put it up.

You get a few free articles, so when you viewed it was probably before you used up all of your free articles.

Fishing Tournaments and Events / Re: MBK Fishing Derby!
« on: September 26, 2021, 09:25:21 PM »
This was my first kayak event and it was so good to chat with all the folks I've been interacting with here for nearly a year.  So much stoke.  So, since I had no idea what to expect going into this, I figure I'll just chronicle my experience in this post so future first-timers can get a feel for what this derby was like.

I booked a room at the Stargazer Inn and the wife wound up tagging along to spectate and enjoy the Monterey coast for a few hours while I fished.  This worked out well for this post since she got some good photos of the launch.  Huge thanks to Adam for the free boat storage!  We headed down Friday, dropped the boat off at MBK and went out to find a bite to eat and hit the rack for some much needed end of the week sleep.  Early morning, coffee chugged, to the MBK lot just before 6 am and started rigging up the kayak...

Adam and his crew had the check-in line moving along nicely, so it was in short time that I was walking out with raffle tickets and swimbait swag in hand and ready to head down to the beach...

I found a spot with some of the folks I've fished with a bunch up nearer SF and staged the boat awaiting the morning brief...

Adam kept the brief... well, brief, but informative and went over the rules and some important safety and regulatory topics.  With everyone on the same page, it was time to launch.  That was probably the coolest sight of the day for me.  Seeing that many kayaks launching at the same time was pretty neat.  A fishing flotilla.

Here's a link to a short video of the launch:  https://i.imgur.com/HxKPHwB.mp4

I did some research on bathymetry data, currents, bottom structure, nautical charts, MPA maps, TLA's awesome tutorial, etc. before heading down, but this would be my first time fishing Monterey.  The plan was to follow the curve of the shoreline seeing what's home as we made our way to the Hotel and then out to the yellow can.  I've been stuck on getting a halibut lately and so I started off with the bounce ball towing a sardine along.  It wasn't long before I had a 23.5" ling onboard.  My buddy in Aptos needs some fish, so bonked and bled and in the fish bag with the bounce ball back down.  Not too much longer after that, a 22.25" lingcod on the boat, CPR'd and back down it goes to get caught another day.  And in short succession... another lingcod at 24.5" bonked and bled.  From there I figured I'd get away from the structure a bit and see if any halibut were in the sand hungry for a sardine.  With an hour of exercise and no halibut to show for it, I started to make my way back over to the yellow can to see how others were doing.  Just as I arrive, I hear Amer call out for assistance.  I asked what he needed and he says he's got a huge hali and his net won't do and no gaff on board.  He asks to use my net and I oblige by expediting a pedal over alongside.  I offer him the net, but he asks if I can net it for him.  Sure thing, scoop that fatty up and Amer lets out a big cheer.  I think he said it was his first ocean hali!  I mentioned that I wasn't sure if the rules covered assists, so definitely be candid when weighing in and he obliged (assists weren't covered in the rules, so the fish was weighed in).  I got out the camera and got some fresh kill shots of Amer with his hali...

At this point, it was nearing time to head back to weigh in, so the flotilla came cruising back to port.  Once on the beach, things were a bit of a whirlwind between stowing all the gear in time for the raffle and awards, but we got some sips of beer in between punchlist items and then it was time for the awards.  Sure enough, Amer's fish was 1st place.  So stoked for you, Amer... the way your face lit up was great.  It was super cool to share that exciting moment with ya!  Next up was the raffle and Adam went through the long list of prizes available thanks to the sponsors.  I wound up winning a Qi Fishing Ares series slow-pitch jigging rod... so stoked on that.  By far the nicest rod I've ever owned.  Some other folks won some really awesome art, other rods, and a bunch of other great prizes.  One last beer in the parking lot with 3$J, Sin Coast and Corey and then it was time to go clean some fish and get the boat rinsed and stowed.

What a great time.  Thanks to Adam, his crew, and all that helped for putting such a great event on!  I can't wait for the next one!

General Talk / Re: Rockaway tomorrow (Saturday 9/25)...
« on: September 24, 2021, 08:20:40 PM »
last Saturday was straight south wind, but the surf was much smaller. Tomorrow the surf will be bigger, but the south wind wont be as bad. Hope that help you to decide.

Magicseaweed is my goto. Says 2-4 decreasing to 2-3 after 9 am. The primary swell direction is straight onto the beach, so that could make for slightly larger than last week when the launch was in the lee created by the point. But, last week was almost like a bay launch, it was so calm. Looks fine, though.

Yeah, I'm not yet familiar with Rockaway's demeanor so to speak as of yet.  Surf last Sat was rated at 2.5'.  Tomorrow is rated at 2'.  So, I'm confused on how you're saying it'll be bigger surf tomorrow.  I do understand about the wind as it was pretty hairy last weekend.

Is there another site I should check out to give me an overall assessment for tomorrows conditions?  I'm coming from Antioch and would like to make a pre-judgement call before making the trip rather than on the beach. Thanks in advance.

CA Regulations / Re: Crab trap regulation change
« on: September 24, 2021, 05:46:14 PM »
I still don’t understand the trap validation requirement. Is it simply a fee like an enhancement that is paid in addition to our general license? Validation makes it sound like we need to have the trap checked by an authority but I don’t see any language like that.

It seems like a "you read and understand the new rules" checkmark requirement when I went through the purchase flow. Kinda silly since you learn about the need for that purchase by reading the rules. *shrug*

Am I interpreting it correctly that we could still use hoop nets even when they close waters to the use of crabs traps due to risk of wildlife entanglement?

That's how I read it with one exception: if the season is closed, I imagine it'll be closed for all methods of take.  So, I guess it depends on how they word the closure, which might be covered in the referenced sections.  I'll give them a read later.  It makes sense that hoops are subject to looser regulations since they're generally too light for deep, offshore waters and they're frequently checked -- i.e. not left out for the entire season to soak like some pots.

Introductions / Re: Huh? Where's the water?
« on: September 23, 2021, 11:14:34 AM »
Thank you I will try that...rent the kayak, not take Dramamine. Ok, maybe I will try the Dramamine, but I heard about Kwells which is a scopolamine pill from Australia that can be purchased from FleaBay that works too. I am going on another charter next month, wish me luck on that one.

I don't deal with seasickness much, but the Scopalamine patches were the goto for the seasick crowd when I was aboard ship.  I don't think Scopalamine causes the same drowsiness as Dramamine, either, but could very well be wrong on that one.  Since you already learned Scopalamine works well, I'd stick with that.  Just remember the frequent triggers of seasickness and minimize them aboard the kayak: looking down tying knots or staring at electronics, staring at the waves right next to you, etc.  Any time I'm in sporty seas and start to feel the quease coming on... I stare at the horizon and chew a ginger candy and things get better immediately.

Your post said thetournament ends at 12:30 pm but the rules said everyone has to be in check-in line by 12 noon.

You must be in line by 12 noon. I am not seeing what post you are referring to? Winner announcement and raffle by 12:30. Are you referring to the 7 to 12:30 on the flyer? If so we are counting the time it is going to take to weigh in

Do we need to be present for the raffle to win?  Feeling like there isn't enough time if I fish up until the 12:00pm time limit, and then try and pack up everything in 30 mins to be at the raffle in time.  On the other hand, maybe I'll get a huge fish and come in early  :smt005

Keep in mind you have to be off the water before noon because you have be in line for weigh-in by noon.  From the derby page: *Anglers must be present and in line for weigh-in by noon to qualify.

Safety First / Re: Rescued a flipped kayak at HMB today 9/18
« on: September 21, 2021, 01:07:15 PM »
He was well prepared with the dry suit, at least. Didn't see if he had a radio, but if he did, I guess it wasn't attached to him when he flipped. That would have been helpful. Lucky I had the motor off and was able to hear him. He said to me "you saved my life", but I doubt that. He could have lasted a long time in that dry suit, and there were many other boats and kayaks around. If I wasn't there, someone else would have noticed him before long. He was not far from the jaws. I bet he could have swum to the jetty and climbed up on the rocks.

I didn't get a chance to ask him if he tried to flip the kayak back over. He was kind of freaked out and took off before much conversation could take place.

Kudos to you for saving the guy, and make no mistake, you DID save the guy!

We can't assume that he was dressed for immersion just because of the drysuit... he might not have been wearing an insulation layer underneath.

Additionally, all those boats/kayakers around him might have thought the same, "Someone else will help him..." which may or may not occur (at all or in time) to actually help the guy.

Lastly, if he was panicked (which it sounds like he was), he wasn't thinking clearly enough to save himself or swim to safety.

You saved him; he even told you so.  If he had been adequately trained/prepared to be on the ocean, we either wouldn't have heard this story, or we'd be reading an autobiographical, cautionary tale about how he went swimming at HMB.

Crabbing season is around the corner... we're going to hear a lot more stories like this.

I speak with coast guard and the harbor patrol when I'm at hmb. The frequency for assisted rescue is far greater than what is reported on these forums or online. Most people who are unprepared and get in trouble are pretty embarrassed and will just scurry away for fear if getting called out or being judged.

Been preaching safety for over 15 years. Nothing has changed much. I still see plenty of people without pfd, wearing shorts and sandals, and completely unprepared. Yelling and telling people to get their sht together aint gonna change the scenario either. I  try to lead by example and that is as much as I can do. Sooner or later it's gonna be mandated and enforces with tickets. We can have the freedom for now but those who are unprepared will lead us all to mandated safety gear and probably fees to implement these programs in the future.

Keep in mind we already have mandated safety equipment requirements that are enforced with tickets.  Luckily, the USCG takes an "education over enforcement" angle and so even when you get a "ticket" it's easily turned into a no-fee fix-it ticket by providing photo proof you've remedied the situation.  That said, if your lack of safety equipment puts you in considerable danger to yourself or others, your voyage may be terminated and it would be a felony to get back on the water without remedying the problems outlined in the paperwork.  No PFD on board would be an example of a terminable offense... or no fire extinguisher with a gas powered motor hanging off your AI... etc.

General Talk / Re: Rockaway tomorrow (Saturday)...
« on: September 20, 2021, 01:37:46 PM »
how'd you guys do?

It was a tough bite, but not too bad.  Winds were up pretty good (12 knots or so), so we tucked in the lee behind land and got into some consistent rockfish action.  I CPR'd a 24.75" lingcod, a 14" black, and a handful of medium and small rockfish.  Saw a few cabbies landed, a few lings, and plenty of rockfish.  Saw a spearo diving with a big cabbie and a big ling on his belt.  The weather wasn't conducive to fishing open water, so we were off the water around 11 and most of the rest of the kayak fleet trickled in over the next hour or so.

It was gorgeous at launch time, though:
