Stealth / Re: Downrigger on a Stealth
« on: May 05, 2022, 02:59:22 PM »
You definitely don't need a downrigger for salmon fishing from a kayak.

This guy on Instagram has a homemade DR on a 525. https://www.instagram.com/p/Bt6jN8clHWk/
I guess you could rig it similarly, but definitely use a thick backing plate, and you may want to trim the DR arm down a bit.

A couple of years ago I found a picture of a double DR mounted in front of an Evo's hatch, so it can be done.

I generally like to use a diver, and did well with one for the last few years on my 500. But Stealths are very sensitive to drag, and I was constantly correcting my heading with the rudder, so I'm switching to a sliding weight for trolling and mooching this year. If they're deeper than 40 feet, I'll mooch.

101 Surf Sports in San Raphael also offers custom private lessons, although I have not taken one there, the shop is great.
But really, surf landings aren't so complicated. Either your timing is perfect and you paddle right in, or 99% of the time you brace when a wave catches you and you ride it in sideways. Get comfortable with high and low braces on both sides of your boat and you're way ahead of most kayakers. Bracing is simple, but you will need to put in some practice.

For anyone who needs the specs, I measured the OD of the stock drain tube a while ago with calipers and it's 13mm or 1/2 inch, but you could easily shim a slightly loose fit with electrical tape or similar waterproof tape.

I've also seen a couple of videos of mods with pumps installed. Should be easy enough to rig. Useful for delicate or XL baits. Here's one:

The only disadvantage I could see for either of these systems is that you'll probably have to adjust the width to fit before you load your "other" boat.
I shelled out for a Lockrack system and really like it. You can probably find the older model for less $. Newer is more adjustable for width, but not needed if you're only hauling kayaks.

I noticed some hull slap when paddling into chop. Do the 525 and 575 experience less slap because they have less rocker, or are they about the same?
- You notice it more because the sound resonates through the stiff fiberglass. Fishas might have a little more than the Pro Fishas, but I'm not paying attention to it.

I had a hell of a time getting my paddle shoe out when I was trying to put my feet in the water to land a fish. I guess the straps help keep you from coming out when you are bracing in the surf. Do you use the foot straps?
- First thing I did was take off the straps, you don't need them.

I'm puzzling over what type of net to carry for salmon. If it is windy I hate having a big net sticking up like a sail, and it always seems to be windy. Strapping any net to the rear deck is awkward, and this kayak is less than 22" wide at that point. My main options seem to be a net that is about 26" wide, a larger high-quality collapsible net that I can open with one hand, or embracing the pure Stealth spirit and just using a gaff. I'm currently leaning towards the gaff. Thoughts?
- I carry a either a large Frabill Power Stow net or a Stowmaster folding net with an upgraded bag that's deeper than the original. Leash it and stick it under the rear bugees during launch.

https://www.frabill.com/shop/nets/power-stow-knotless-net

Any suggestions on where to get an insulated kill bag that will fit nicely inside the fish hatch? Or should I keep it minimalist and forego the bag?
- I DIYed a bag, but burlap is fine. The hatch is easily washed out with some dish soap and a capful of bleach after fishing.

What kind of paddle should I get? And more importantly, what are good resources for improving my paddling technique?
- Spend $ on a light paddle you really, really like because you will be using it a lot. No need for a wing, they're a bit more efficient going forward, but flat blades are more versatile. I'd rec. you buy one with a shaft that's adjustable for length and feather. Stealth paddles are 220cm, but for me that's a bit long. If you want to go with a flat blade, I'd recommend you look at high angle touring paddles like a Werner Cyprus. If you want a wing, the Stealth Angla is well made and forgiving. Most wings are made for racing and have a lot of helical twist in the blade, so they're demanding to use and you probably don't want that.

Pm if you want more info.

Stealth / Re: New transducer mount

More detailed demo from Brett at the factory. You could even mount a sidescan transducer on top of the cover plate. Pretty slick system.

No more gluing your transducer in-hull or dangling it over the side. Not sure if it will support side scan, but this pretty much eliminates interference and drag issues.

I don't think you need to mess around with the rudder. This guy mounted a bracket and small motor to the rod holders.

Bungee to hold hatch lid closed is also really useful. Some people use a round button instead of a hook, but I think the hook is a bit more secure. https://www.amazon.com/YYST-Paddle-Keeper-Bungee-Holder/dp/B01H2XB18W/

Mesh pocket in the hatch is great. Attaches with velcro so you can easily remove it. https://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Webs-Tackle-Black-Large/dp/B00JURUDQ0/

That's not a 460 picture, it's a Fusion 480. Also, the green is a different shade for fiberglass boats, not as bright. Here's a couple of instagram link to a green 460s. Instagram color filters are a bit wonky, but these pics are fairly accurate.

100% on board with DIY. I didn't really like any of the commercial options. You can also get the length perfect if you DIY. I used 1/4 inch bungee with hog rings and shrink tube on the carabiner/boat end, and a perfection loop with velcro cable tie on the paddle end.

Nice work! I was thinking about making a shim for a Railblaza sideport to get it level, but this looks about perfect.
