Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Geartrac. scotty or Ram
« on: June 22, 2015, 09:52:19 PM »
i am looking into getting some 4" geartracs for my perception pescador 12 (older tarpon 120 without the side geartracs)

the area i want to mount is on either side of the small 6" hatch behind the seat.  the tracks would run front to back.  i dont see any other place to do this.  the reason is that i want to install some rocket launcher rod holders for trolling, and for keeping other gear like net, gaff, etc.

i also need help with choosing the right rod holder as well, im thinking either the scotty gear head+ scotty rocket launcher, or the ram screwball + ram 2008 tube rod holder.
i havent seen either one in person to really have the feel for things. so im calling on those who have used both.  it looks like the scotty is stiffer since it clicks in, but the ram may be more versitile for different angles?  im even leaning towards getting both and running one on each side.

2nd question: with a 4" geartrac, am i pretty much limited to one item on it? would i have space for a rod holder and for example a camera stick mount?  its a bit hard to imagine in my head.  i MAY be able to fit 8" ones in that location, but i think it has some curvature

3rd question: im debating on either getting the gt175 or gt90 tracks. some say the 175 is stronger, some say they are same.  if doing what im doing is safe with the gt90's i'd go for it since i dont want too many holes on the kayak.  and of course i will be getting the backing plate.

another question to help decide the answer to 2 and 3, if i get too longer geartrac, would i be able to bend it lengthwise to fit the curve of the kayak? and if i was to install it curved, would it function properly?  also if this is the case i would lean more towards the gt90 (easier to work with?)

lastly, where would i expect to get the best deal for this rig?  it looks like everything i want is going to run me over $100.  so i'd like to save as much as i can.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Harmony kayak beach cart
« on: June 17, 2015, 08:08:08 PM »
I know this may have been covered before but i just picked up a kayak cart from cck in san carlos.  Im not sure if i want to keep it, i will base the decision on feedback and experience.  Also i got it for half off.

Y

So its similar to the wheeleez, i cannot afford to spend a lot of money right now on wheeleez.  I was using a diy pvc cart, but i learned the hard way at mbk, that i needed to get something with inflatable tires that have a bigger contact surface, if i want to move my kayak across the beach.

Does anyone use this one? Or any of the ones from harmony? Is it durable? Is the wheel material easily punctured? If so, can it be repaired?  I know its inferior to wheeleez, but how does it compare considering the price i paid?

Regular price 119.00
Cck san carlos clearance i got it for 60.00

I was looking at wheeleez, but at 60buck for a this what do you guys think? I definately would not have paid full price.

There are still a few similar ones still if anyone is interested, they are clearing them out at 50% off.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Measuring sticker/decal for paddle
« on: May 12, 2015, 11:19:38 PM »
Anyone have any recommendations on a measuring decal to be put on a paddle? Ive seen some on amazon, but would like some input from you guys on here about what works the best.

Looking for durable, accurate, seamless, ease of application.  My paddle is a 2pc btw.

I know they have "angler" specialized paddles that already have that feature, but for now i don't want to buy a new paddle.

Right now i working with a tape measure that i have to pull out and put away everytime, and im sure itll corrode very fast after a few saltwater outings.

I dont want to carry around a hog trough either. Im just the kind of guy that doesnt like to haul around too many things when fishing, especially tackle, i just keep one small waterproof "amobox" plano and just want to work with what i have.  I almost don't want to bring a net. Also to mention, i have a perception pescador 12, so it doesn't have much space to carry stuff.

Any tips, recommendations are all appreciated.

Hi guys i got a few hours before going to work on Saturday. I work in the peninsula, so oyster point is an near and easy. Never fished the bay on a kayak before, but i have fished off the piers, especially oyster point. Last time i was there, pier fisherman were pulling up a few 30lbers, but that was in october.

What should i expect from this loacation as far as navigation, tidal drift, etc. Weather looks decent.

Secondly, anyone fish here recently have any reports?  Im trying for halibut and/or striper.

Never caught a halibut before, so would appreciate any tips on rigging. Heard trolling a 3 way rig would work. Im thinking two hooks, one with anchovy, other being maybe a swimbait.

Bounce ball method maybe? What size weight?

Another question i have is: when kayakers say "trolling" how does that work if not using a downrigger? Is there such thing as trolling without downrigger? If so, how do you set up your rig?

If all else fails maybe will go for some leopards.

Im trying to hookup with someone who willl be willing to launch with me around 7am, finish 1pm at the latest. Im still a newb, this will be my 2nd time fishing salt (1st was at mkb last week), if i cannot find a partner, i may just fish from pier.

For Sale / Sports authority 20% off one single item
« on: April 15, 2015, 11:40:45 PM »
Just a heads up guys, i just ordered my first conventional setup. This is only running a few days so hurry! Great for anyone trying to save on a nice rod or reel. I saved on both since i bought a combo.  Also free shipping on orders $49 or more

http://www.sportsauthority.com/product/index.jsp?productId=42499536

The penn jigmaster combo. Don't know how good the rod is. The "slammer" they call it. Anyone have it like it?

I figured its a great deal since most places sell the jigmaster for the same price by itself.  Deal came out to about $71 before tax.

Cant wait to catch some lings with this!

General Talk / Old school reel
« on: April 01, 2015, 09:25:41 PM »
So, when i bought my house, the previous owner left a bunch of stuff behind. Among some of the stuff i found this old conventional reel. Doesn't have any brand tagged on it. I haven't tried it yet, but it seems to work for what it is. It doesn't have any drag or anti reverse. The bait clicker does work, and the lever works. In freespool, it is still pretty smooth for something so old. Anyone have any idea what it is? I'd like to try it out on the water some day, if it doesn't have any drag, i might just end up making it a crab snare reel.

Checked out coyote for the first time with the kayak. Fished from 9am-2pm til it got hot. A lot of boats out everyone was catching dinks i couldn't even get a dink so i started to screw around with the ff i just installed, saw some action, made a quick uturn casted at the the area i saw the arch then bam, scored this guy. Didn't have a scale but i think he was over 3lbs close to 4lbs. In about 20ft of water. Fished for a while and was dry the rest of the day.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Ram mount for lowrance elite 3x
« on: December 28, 2014, 10:04:38 PM »
Just got my first ff and its the lowrance elite 3x. Decided to go cheap and spend extra money on safety gear.  I don't want to use their provided mount, but i cant find anywhere that says that there's a ram mount. The ram mounts sold are compatible with the 4x, etc. But it didn't say anything about the 3x. Will it fit? Has anyone tried it? I saw a ram type mount on lowrance launch video of this device. Is it the one for the 4x? Ive looked everywhere online couldn't find much info.

hi guys my name is bob, and im new to this board. i am planning to go out for the very first time in saltwater to pillar point on saturday morning at 6am.  i am a bit nervous so i think i will stay within the harbor unless the conditions are calm then i will venture out a little bit.

i am hoping someone can show me around.

i have been kayaking mostly in freshwater and i am still a beginner. i have a perception pescador 12 in red.

i plan on bringing the following:
-pfd
-farmer john 3mm suit
-warm clothes and hat
-some food and water
-change of clothes
-water shoes
-gloves
-small backpack with tackle and tools, knife, pliers, tape measure, first aid etc.
-2 rods for trying to rockfish, lings, and crabs
-crab snare
-crab guage
-bait (squid? maybe anchovy?)

kayak perception pescador 12 equipped with:
-scotty rod holder
-another rod holder right behind seat
-paddle with leash
-anchor and anchor trolley (will this be necessary?)

what i'd like to bring but cannot afford at the moment:
-vhf radio
-fish finder
therefor i will stay in or near the harbor close to people just in case something goes wrong.

would you guys recommend anything else? i am broke at the moment so i wont have the means to buy anything over 50bucks, and i plan to add a little here and there as i progress.  i keep it light as far as equipment when i go kayak fishing. at the moment. but in the future i have plans for more rigging for the yak.

any tips on what bait or lures i should use? i have never targetted rockfish before...

also from hearing from what people recommend, i plan on launching at the beach near the old pier. will be there at 6am.

i appreciate any tips and or anyone able to join me on saturday.

Introductions / Hi from San Jose.
« on: November 12, 2014, 09:33:24 PM »
Hi everyone, my name is Bob Pham and I am from San Jose California. I am a self taught and you tube taught fisherman. And have fished since I was a kid. I wouldn’t say I have much luck with fishing on most of my trips but I love to do it anyway!  I usually fish from reservoirs in the San Jose area, and occasionally fish in the bay or the piers.  Last year I finally got a kayak and I have been doing mostly freshwater for bass.

I have a Perception Sport Pescador 12 in RED. I love it!

I have been reading on this forum for several days now and I finally had a chance to make an account. I am seeking to start fishing off my kayak in saltwater, so I am hoping I can hook up with fellow NCKA’s on upcoming trips

Anyways, enough here, I will post another thread about going saltwater in another board.
