For Sale / WTS: jig heads 3oz and 4oz (or trade)
« on: June 01, 2016, 10:26:48 PM »
Finally came around to finishing these so they will be up for sale so i can offset cost to get started pouring more.  Im looking forward to be able to buy more molds so need to get some funding for that.

Jigheads are 3oz or 4oz shad style using the do-it shad #9 mold.
Hooks are mustad 8/0 #91715
Paint will be red or white
Silver eyes on red ones, red eyes on white ones.

I also applied a coat of hard head over the the finished jighead to seal the eyes and provide more gloss and durability.

About 50pcs of mixed sizes and colors.

Asking $2.00 each.  If you pick up 10 or more ill throw in a few blemished or unfinished heads.  While supplies last

Open to trades for fishing gear, or if you have other molds we can do a temp swap.  At the moment this is the only mold i have

Located in san jose, work in redwood city, or ncka express.  No shipping at the moment.

Craftsmen's Corner / My journey into the world of Lead pouring
« on: April 30, 2016, 03:35:44 PM »
So the past few outings i lost a lot of gear, jigheads, rigs, and other things. And after buying jigheads for about 3-5bucks a piece, i said enough is enough.  I did a little homework and decided to pour my own.

Ordered the Lee melter, some cast iron supplies, some safety supplies including googles, respirator, gloves etc.

Then it got to the point where i needed to get some lead. Sure i can pay for ingots at 1.50-2.00 per lb, but i thought there must be a better way.  I looked on youtube and seen people collect wheel weights and melt them down.  I have a tire guy, so i gave him a visit, and sure enough he had two buckets waiting for me.  They were not sorted, and he was just going to sell it to scrap the scrap metal guy. I told him ill take it, ill pay you for it.  Instead he offered it to me for free since i give him so much business.

Now the hard part. There was all sorts on stuff mixed in. Iron, steel, zinc, plastic.  I needed to know how to find lead. Youtube taught me that. After cutting, crimping, knocking nearly every piece to determine the composition, i was able to sort it out after 3 days.  I also know that zinc would contaminate my lead, so i made sure i did not have any in there.

The lead wheel weights came out to a solid 45lbs, which was over 1/3 of the total scrap.  Im happy with this yield because i know in the future, lead wheel weights will be more scarce because of the ban.

I heated the lead using a cast iron skillet, but my burner and so it got like a gooey consistency, i suspected that i had zinc in there, but later found out the burner wasnt hot enough. I skimmed whatever needed to be taken out and i scooped the half melted lead and put aside.

So few days later, my lee melter came in, and the fun begins.  Threw in the half melted stuff and it melted down quickly. Poured them into a few jigheads, and after a few trial and error pours i got it down.  The first few i had issues with the lead not being able to get into the crevices to create the bait locks.  I found out not only the mold needed to be warm, but also the hooks.

Was about to pour about 60 jigheads, with still about 25lbs left of ingots i made, and some wheelweights i was still not able to get to.  After a long tireing few hours, i called it a day.  Im happy to be able to accomplish my goal, and to be able to save a ton of money.  No more retail jigheads!!!

Mold: do it! Style #9 3oz abd 4oz
Hooks: mustad 91715 90degree 8/0

General Fishing Tips / Linda mar 4/17 video please critique
« on: April 19, 2016, 11:04:59 PM »
Hi guys heres a video i put together from whatever footage i was able to capture last weekend.  Not much fish, but i just want to see what you guys think as far as my editing, etc.  I used to mount my cam on a stick behind seat, but this time i tried out my head mount.  Also i am using filmora to edit, and its actually pretty simple, has a lot of features and cool effects. Please go easy on the critique

Also whales at the end, can barely tell, but i see whales at this location every single time.

I know the music might not be your cup of tea but i think its relaxing.

Let me know what you guys think, i'd like to be able to make much more vids in the future.

General Talk / Custom rod with cool turkish wraps
« on: April 17, 2016, 11:02:12 PM »
My good friend just built me a very nice custom rod. Heavy, with fast tip. Have yet to try it out yet, but in very stoked about it.  I also had him put a loop on the foregrip so i can attach a leash when kayaking.

Im really diggin the wrap job, and the fact that its one of a kind customized to my fishing style, makes it more special.  I lost my fishing partner few years ago, who was also my best friend.  Cancer sucks, so this rod was kindda like a tribute to him, with the special color (periwinkle)  as a reminder and the color for gastric cancer awareness.

Im not sure how ncka feels about posting links or advertising, so if anyone wants something custom made, you can pm me and ill refer you to my rod builder buddy.

Hi guys, here she is. The one that started it all for me. Hate to do this, but ill just put it on here to see if any newbies want to get in on the action.  Originally was going to keep it and use as a loaner for my friends but none of them would be as commited as i am and transporting 2 boats is not possible at the moment, as i just picked up a thresher.

This boat is the same mold as the pre 2009 wilderness tarpons. And also west marine sells it as the pompano.

Bought about 2 and a half years ago from sports authority. Used a few times on freshwater, then when i got into saltwater fishing maybe about couple dozen outings. Always rinsed down after, and garaged. Has the usual scratches from usage. Nothing major. Its great as a freshwater or beginner ocean kayak. Length is great, tracks great, and light enough to load overhead (60lbs).

Comes originally with the following (included):
-CSS comfort seating system. Built in very comfortable
-Harmony paddle
-angler package
-flush mount rod holder. rear right behind seat
-scotty rod holder in the middle forward seat
  -3lb anchor w/ line
-rudder ready, but i never bought and installed rudder (didnt need it)

Things that i have installed/upgraded:
-harmony anchor trolley
-2x yak attack 4" geartracks with back plates. Behind seat.
-pockets for both the small 6" hatches (front of seat/ behind seat)
-padded foot pegs
-lowrance elite 3x fish finder with transducer installed in the hull.  Comes with ram mount made for the lowrance ff
-riggedfor battery (not included, but can be bought from frys) and waterproof bag for battery.

And lots of great fish mojo! Caught a lot of good fish from this yak.

I dont know what to ask really. Lets start with $650 i think is very fair considering all the extras and upgrades. This boat is ready to fish.

Wilderness Systems / Thresher 155 review
« on: November 02, 2015, 10:51:32 PM »
Recieved my new thresher 155 last thursday. Been too busy to post up some pics.  Bought from ack from their 2015 closeout red was a closeout color which just so happens to be the color i was going to get anyways. Pricing was at about 1200 (retail now is 1549)  which i thought was a killer deal i couldn't resist.

Also took advantage of their 15% off on accesories, got a few things including a closeout werner hooked tybee paddle.

Now to start rigging. Anyone have any ideas? I could assume not much have to be done to it since there are gear tracks everywhere. Debating on puttinng some flushmount rod holders. The flexpod is awesome. Still trying to see which lowrance to get. Probably the elite 4 chirp hopefully it goes on sale soon.  Would appreciate any tips and advice. I dont see many samples online, since its just a first model year and i guess not many people have this boat.

I have it mounted on my car in the pic, i tried out a few ways to load it. The reason why i wanted a 15ft boat is so i can solo load it from the front of my car. Rear keel on the floor and bring the front on to my yakima bar. The hull rests on the car hood just a little, so ill have to put some padding on my hood to do it. But it works.  Boat hangs out a lot. If anyone has any tips on loading easier, please let me know. I used to solo load a 12ft pescador 60lbs by lifting it over my head. No way i can do that now with this 80lb beast.

Now. Where to go for her maiden voyage.

General Talk / Clear lake camping activities
« on: August 09, 2015, 11:47:36 AM »
Heading out to clearlake to do our annual camping trip aug 21, and i had a few questions.  It looks like i will not be kayaking, since none of my friends are into that kind of stuff. But we do fish, so it will be done from shore.  Campsites are in the kelsey creek area by the bridge. at the tip of the island, never been there but from seeing google maps it looks like its a pretty sweet spot.

We will be targeting catfish mainly, but will be trying for bass as well. My question is, do they allow nighttime fishing there? Or even at the campgrounds? What are the regs like at clearlake?

Secondly, we are looking to do at least one day of boating, does anyone know a rental place closeby? Me and my friends are interested in Water spots, tubing, or just chilling on the water with a big boat.  There's a possibility i might rent a fishing boat.

Any tips are appreciated.  Thanks in advance

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Ncka flag
« on: August 04, 2015, 11:00:50 PM »
Hey so i made a diy flag for my last outing, using an old broken fishing rod. Spraypainted it and it came out great. I cut out a plastic table cover since i was in a hurry to have one to go out last weekend. It worked out well but im in the market for a nicer flag. Maybe a ncka flag. Anyone on here make them? I would really be interested in purchasing one, or if anyone knows a place online to buy a nice creative looking one that would work as well.

General Fishing Tips / Ugly stik tiger lite jigging
« on: July 29, 2015, 09:12:33 PM »
Cant afford a trevala right now, so ugly stik tiger will have to do.  Im looking at a few, but before i get into any questions, i would like to mention that i will be mostly doing rf, lings, occasional halibut if lucky, but mostly targeting lings. Mostly jigging with swimbait, shrimpfly, grubs, with weights up to 6oz. Not really a fan of live bait. Also will do some bay fishing for striper and halibuts.

Will be pairing with penn jigmaster. Will it fit?

Question: i have my heart set on the tiger lite jigging 6'3" (biggest one) Will this be an appropriate rod for the reel ill be using and the application? Anyone have this particular rod? Its the one with the "trigger".  Is 6'3 long enough? If you recommend a "regular" tiger rod, why?  If not for the increased length. And what's the difference between the regular and lite version on the tigers?

Should i just neglect the jigging label mentality when looking for a kayak rod?

Lastly ive seem a few other jigging style rods as well, aside from trevala, theres penn rampage, and another one from okuma. Anyone have them and like them?

General Talk / Santa cruz skiff 7/11
« on: July 09, 2015, 08:41:47 PM »
Planning to head to santa cruz on Saturday 7/11 and rent a skiff.  I have not kayaked sc yet before so i figured id scope it out first. Conditions look good. I will be watching ch 69. Im going to be fishing for lings and rocks.

Do you guys have any tips for being on a skiff? And hot spots anyone want to share?
Anything to avoid?

I didn't know how many people can fit comfortably in the skiff, i will not be bringing much gear so there is a possibility there will be an open seat if anyone is interested in joining us, will split charges per person.  Will be there at 6:30am head back by 1pm at the latest.
