General Talk / Monterey Heroes On the Water Help?
« on: July 15, 2021, 07:54:55 AM »
Hello All,

I am trying to coordinate with HOW a kayak fishing event on August 28th on Municipal Beach in front of MBK. MBK will be providing the veterans the kayaks but we are seeking some experienced volunteers to help out. You would be on the water assisting these veterans to catch fish and help out where needed. MBK and HOW will provide everything needed we will just need some experienced anglers to bring their own kayak. These experienced anglers would not be allowed to fish rather they would be there only to help them catch the fish and take lots of photos. You would be assigned your own individual

Let me know if you are interested and can help out this at this great cause. If you dont have a kayak MBK can provide you with one.

General Talk / Trophies or Fish Plaques???
« on: April 19, 2021, 09:26:42 AM »
Hello,

As you know MBK will be throwing the derby this year. Since all proceeds will be going to the Monterey Bay Salmon and Trout Restoration Project I am trying to spend the least amount of money as possible. Any ideas or anyone know someone that could donate something like this?

Thanks,

General Talk / 2021 MBK Fishing Derby Inquiry
« on: March 19, 2021, 10:28:32 AM »
Hello All,

We were not able to run the Derby last year for obvious reasons. I am also thinking that our usual date of June might be a little too soon with Covid still an issue. That is why I am proposing these dates. We would limit the number of sign ups and of course this would all be on our beach outside.

I also want to hear from you to see what you think of us throwing a derby. I should have plenty of prizes but might struggle with getting a kayak donated as the factories are still back logged and we are having a hard time getting them. We can't even order prowlers right now! Was thinking of doing a 40$ buy in and a raffle. Every sign up gets a free swimbait! All proceeds go to the Salmon and Trout Restoration Project of Monterey Bay. Since the fires hit them bad last year it will be great to get some help

Let me know what you think

General Talk / Need Input! MBNMS Advisory Council
« on: February 10, 2021, 04:08:35 PM »
Hello All,

Some of you know me and some of you do not. I know there is a lot of mixed emotions about the MBNMS Advisory Council. Many of the information about what they do is false, but I want to first see what people thought they did? Or what they are doing.

I am the Recreational Fishing Seat Alternate for the Council and am trying help people to better understand what we do and don't do. You won't hurt my feelings I just really want to know what people think of the Advisory Council.

I just have seen some older posts and comments about some bad blood between fisherman and the AC. Know this, I am an avid fisherman and I know every aspect of this sanctuary. Fishing is my life both literally and figuratively. I want to better understand what the community thinks?

General Talk / I met Ed Gilette!!
« on: August 13, 2020, 09:45:01 AM »
Highlight for me. If you have not read his story you should. The book is called "The Pacific Alone". He had a lot of history here at Monterey Bay Kayaks and came in to chat and tell stories. In the late 80's he paddles from Monterey to Hawaii in a 2 person sit inside kayak. A Necky Tofino. No radio, no gps, no technology. Navigated the old fashioned way. He was the first and only to paddle to Hawaii in a kayak. Not to mention by himself!

Was so excited and didnt know who else to tell lol

General Talk / Man in Grey Suit
« on: August 04, 2020, 07:56:42 AM »
Man in a grey suit was spotted off of the Coast guard Jetty yesterday with a big hook in its mouth and a rope stuck to him. Anyone here trying to snag a white? lol

General Talk / Kayak Fishing For Beginners
« on: July 27, 2020, 11:09:51 AM »
Hello All,

Over the many years of kayak fishing I still see a ton of guys going out and being rescued or being attacked on other groups and forums for asking what others think are dumb questions. I do't see it in this group and fully support NCKA. I tell everyone I meet in the kayak fishing world to join. Since there is so many new and very experienced kayak fisherman in NCKA i would like you all to join a facebook group I created called "Kayak Fishing For Beginners" https://www.facebook.com/groups/kayakfishingforbeginners/

It is a safe place where you experienced guys can help out the new guys. We do giveaways and raffles and support NCKA, and other kayak fishing communities. I just want to make sure people are first and foremost safe and getting the right information rather than just getting the run around. No spot burning but you can at least point some of these newer fisherman into the right direction and help them to avoid any sticky situations with safety or regulations.

If this post is against the rules feel free to remove. I just feel that this group is more important now more than ever with the amount of people out kayaking and the rise in rescues over the years.

Thanks

General Talk / MBK Now Open!!!
« on: July 01, 2020, 07:50:43 AM »
Been a bit inactive on here for awhile as it has been very busy opening the shop back up. We have sold out of most of our kayaks but due to covid we can't get more until mid September. The factories are backed up even though we ordered before covid (BC) But the shipment coming in will have the new sportsman OldTown line of kayaks. We are running fishing tours again, rentals, and our normal tours as well but due t0 covid we have limited capacity. So if any of this interests you check out our website at Montereybaykayaks.com to reserve your spot for any of the above listed activities.

I will say that Monterey including us are busier than ever with everyone wanting to go kayaking. Fathers day weekend and memorial day weekend broke records here in Monterey with the amount of people in town. Be safe out there and come by and say hi if you get a chance

General Talk / Monster Jack Smelt
« on: May 20, 2020, 11:38:22 AM »
I have been trolling for halibut and stripers in the surfzone with great success the past week. Past few day I have been catching monster Jacksmelt a few have been 20in + They fight better than a striper in my opinion. I have never caught them before and was wondering if this was common for Monterey Are? Also I heard they taste bad. For those that say they taste good how are you preparing them?
