For Sale / Re: tarpon 160 on craigslist

Nice. I really like my 140, it easily keeps up with my brother in laws scupper pro and it pretty much smokes wider kayaks. Excellent for those "paddle like hell" launches & landings. I'd guess the 160 would track even better.

My wife & I had a black bear walk into the hallway leading to our apartment door when we lived in Whittier, AK. She has a pic of it standing in the dumpster on the side of the aprtment building. The blacks were all over that year, in downtown, wherever. The train would come in during the morning and the 100 or so tourists would mill around the depot. One morning a black bear walked under the train and popped out right in the middle of a bunch of them. The cops would use firecrackers and rubber bullets to chase them off.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: PFD's

I've always been an extrasport guy. I've had the sabre, mona lisa, and now I'm using a retroglide sabre which I like a lot. It's not a mesh back and so might not work well with all boats, though. I dig the big pockets & the radio pocket.
The lotus PFDs look good and seem well made, but they just don't fit me well.

I'm going to do my best to fish Elk this year. I'm putting a mark over both weekends to save the dates. Lings are OK, but after seeing Erik's vermilion from last year, I want one of my own!

Kayaks / Re: Anybody fish a sit-in kayak?
« on: February 27, 2007, 12:02:10 PM »
I started fishing in a Prijon Yukon Tour. It was a flat bottomed river touring boat, 14', with a huge keyhole cockpit. It was stable enough, and I fished mostly bass & rockfish in the socal kelp beds and I brought in some nice salmon up in AK with that boat. Problem was the big cockpit and the light weight made it a bear to surf launch. I eventually sold it to guy in the bay area after I moved here and bought a couple of SOT's for fishing & stuff.
The SOT style kayak is just more practical for my application now. Plus, I haven't really kept up with my eskimo roll...
Your success/enjoyment really depends on the design of the SI you have & where you'll be fishing. Up in AK and WA, most everyone I knew who kayak fished used sit ins due to the weather & paddling efficiency. Thats how the natives did it!

Yeah, I've found the same problem with my standard size milk crate. Lately i've been thinking of cutting it down to make it more rectangular, so I don't have to reach back so far to toss my stringer in the well. I like Joel's storage box setup, and I'm percolating ideas around something like that.
Necessary things are:
2 rod holders +billy & gaff holders
space for small dry bag & paddle jacket
water bottle
I don't really carry much back there, and the full size crate is mostly for shuttling all of my stuff to & from the truck.
I'm also trying to put the kayak on a diet & lose a few pounds to make the beach portages easier. It's a work in progress...

Welcome Rick!
I learned to paddle in the SF Bay with a bunch of folks from UCSF's "outdoors unlimited" and BASK. Needless to say, it changed my life for the better! I too started with a sit-in, but the SOT's are the way to go for low maintenance, knock around fishing craft.
See you on the water!

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Re: AOTY at Fred Hall

Thanks for taking those great pics Mickfish! I agree that Chuck, Joel, and Sean were the best represetatives NCKA could have asked for. For me, the highlights of Sunday's show were the presentations by Sean White and Allen Bushnell, checking out Duane's "insane" crabbing setup, and just endless chatting about kayaks and fishing with everyone. It was all topped off be a beautiful winter evening drive home on the 1.
It was really great to meet so many of you and put faces to the screen names.
Thanks for the compliments on the awards!

Yeah. Even though they got caught & punished, I'll hope that they spend a chunk of their afterlife being munched on by a thousand  PO'd baby leopard sharks. Glad to see those big fines go to the right place.

Jeez, hijacked is right. I read the first few posts about movies & books, yet when I go to the las to recommend a film I'm reading about relationship advice??? Not that there's anything wrong with that...
I was trying to think of the film title that Nanook of the north reminded me of. It was "Man from Aran". The old film is about village life on an island near scotland. It has one of the gnarliest fishing scenes in it I've seen (since it is all real) in which a rowboat full of fishermen harpoon a huge basking shark. I thought it was very interesting.
Anyway, ya'll can go back to what you were talking about now.  :smt003

I'll be there on either Saturday or Sunday afternoon (have to coordinate car usage with my wife since my bronco is down for now). I will have the AOTY awards for Bill to hand out.
I'm looking forward to meeting some of you there!

I did the decks at a rental I used to live in, it too was bare wood weathered for a year. Pressure washed it and then used a little herbicide sprayer ($12) for the deck seal/stain. It worked great! Just in case you want to do it yourself...
