Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Davenport 9/9
« on: September 10, 2007, 09:58:48 AM »
Another perfect fall morning on the water. We fished davenport area. I tried iron, bomber squids & swimbaits, with limited success on all. Smallish gophers, blues, etc. were the catch. My last two drops got me a ling each time, but one was only 20" and the other was marginal, probably 24.1" so released it as well.
After making BH the previous day I guess I took the mini surf at Davenport for granted, as I ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time on the way in. I looked up to see a 1' dumper jack up behind me. I was just a little too sideways, with no way to do anything to avoid the inevitable. I felt like wile e. coyote holding up his parasol. I believe I had enough time to say "Ah, Cr%$" before the boat rolled over in the soup :smt012. I tucked flat to the deck & really hoped there were no rocks where my head was going to be.
Well, live n learn. After all my successful launches & landings the past few years I guess I was due for a reminder. Only losses were my cheapy sunglasses, a bit of halibut tackle, and my 2nd fish billy for the season. Fortunately all the important stuff (reels, GPS, n stuff) were stowed.
A La Cabana super burrito & a cold anchor steam made it all better :smt003
Lessons here?
1. leashes work
2. anything not stowed should be expendable and/or able to withstand burial in sand
3. paddle with someone who can dive in to rescue your new floating fish gripper

I don't see a post on our trip yet, & I saw Eyeatbay is interested, so here goes...
The forecast was ok, so I did a drive-by of Davenport on my way up the 1. FAC, swell only about 3-4, sweet! Put that flip flop to the pedal & lets get goin! I met EricB and Sail Fisk at the pullout above Bean. OTW by about 7am I think. I think tide was incoming. Wind was light from the SE, just about perfect for drifting with a 3ounce leadhead. I just drifted between coodinates from the last trip until my GPS went out, then lined up with a certain house on the bluff.
I tried a megabait early, then switched to a big green scampi. Caught a couple gophers, then got on a nice fish at about 8:30am, a lingcod, taped out to 31". Used my gaff for the very first time, and now I'm sold. One stick, one bonk, and fish is on the clip & in the tankwell, no tangled anything, no fuss :smt002. I released a trio of gophers after that, plus a beautiful rockfish that I have yet to identify, maybe a copper but a little different from others I've seen. Near 10:30am, boom, another nice fish on, thought it was a ling at first, but it turned out to be a nice vermilion, 22". That was plenty of fish for me. I would have like to target some halibut, however once out there I found I had NO white lures??? Need to go shopping apparently...
So, overall pretty nice conditions out there. Fishing was just happening enough to keep things interesting. No halibut this trip, but no GWS either, so no complaints here :smt003.
One thing about BH, it feels like every strike might be a biiig fish, you just never know.
Eric & Sail Fisk, it was fun fishing with you, lets do it again!

This is a pretty interesting article I came across. Although I usually :smt001 try to stay out of 8 foot dumping surf, it was a fun read with some good info.

I'll be at 4mile early, about 6:30. Looks like the swell is smallish & hopefully the wind will be down in the am. It'll be a shortish trip, need to be outta there by noon to prepare a fish taco feast for a bunch of belly dancers. yeah, life's rough :smt003.
If you are interested, you'll need wheels. I consider 4mile my "elk training ground".

General Fishing Tips / general Elk tips, gear, etc.
« on: July 30, 2007, 11:13:35 AM »
OK, I'm in the throes of doing 2 weeks' worth of planning in 3 days.

I've got the rolleeze cart thing down, though I'm making do with the smaller tires for this trip. I'm sure wishing I'd done the moon tire conversion now...

I read Brian's "elk tips" and am down with them. Thanks Brian!

As far as tackle goes, I'm figuring on big swimbaits (3-6oz) and 4-8 ounce irons and diamond jigs, with some stuff for bait setups (6-8oz weights) as well. Are these appropriate lure weights for the area?
I figure on bringing a couple of rods: 30lb setup on a fenwick tiger stick with a daiwa 50h, and my main cencal rod, a lighter weight Sabre with Abu reel, 30lb spectra. These ought to do, right?

I'm picking up a nice big ice chest today. Is there anything special that I might need beyond standard camping stuff? Anything that i might have overlooked?
My mind is reeling here (no pun intended) after coming in to work and seeing that I am lucky enough to be included at the last minute. I sense lots of artistic inspiration (& fish fillets) to come from this adventure.
Thanks,
Sean

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / North SC
« on: July 02, 2007, 04:17:49 PM »
Fished Natural Bridges area on Saturday. Pacific was FAC, looked like a tropical paradise at 7:30am. By 8:30 the wind was up, the sheep were out and by 9am I was done. So, when will the wind wait until noon like usual for summer?!!!!
Anyway, I managed one nice red on my first drop with a white swimbait, then a constant scratch of smallish black and yellow RF and gopher RF. Got one underling at about 22". Fish tacos for lunch were worth the early rising.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / North Santa Cruz

Fished North of Natural Bridges for a couple of hours Sunday morning. Trudge to the beach was made worse by the minus tide in the am. In two hours I got hit once on a white scampi and landed a marginal ling, probably was 23.99", and released it. PB's around kept on the move, so it didn't seem like they were doing any better. I'm still waiting for the north coast to light up this season...

Fished north of SC on Saturday hoping for the perfect halibut tide to stir the bite. No dice for me. Got two little RF, black & yellow and a gopher, on a bounced hoochie. Chilly out there, and swell was rising. Water still pretty murky.
While I was tossing a white swimbait I hear a "whoosh" behind me. I figured it was just a big male sea lion, as I could see its whole back...wait a sec, that's just it's head??? Then the young elephant seal raised his head straight up out of the water about 2 feet. The whole animal might have been 12 feet long, at least. His nostrils looked a double barreled 8 gauge, and his eye looked about as big as my fist when he turned it on me. He slipped back beneath the water, and that was all I saw of him. It turned a basically skunked day into something interesting. I think that's the first elephant I've seen here in SC in the last 5 years.

Got out for a two'fer this weekend.
My brother in law came up from SoCal and we fished Saturday off of Davenport. Conditions were, um, interesting. Conflicting wind swell and current cancelled each other out, so even with wind to 15kt we just sat in one spot without drifting until about 10am when the current started to lay down. It was a tough scratch for fish, we managed a short 23" ling and a nice 18" cabezon among the short bites and in-the-lap wind waves.
Sunday we opted for a mellow session off of the Lighthouse point/seal rock area. Sea was calm & with only a light refeshing breath of wind. The sun came out even. After hauling in a few smallish blues & black and yellow RF, I thought I had gotten snagged on a holdfast. With only dead weight for resistance, imagine my surprise to see a nice fat 29" ling come up! The ling had an 8" blue RF in his mouth staring up at me as I removed the hook. The thing looked like something from Alien, with two faces. Anyway, a great couple of mornings on the water and some delish grilled Lingcod for supper last night.

General Talk / domoic acid?
« on: May 09, 2007, 09:12:44 AM »
Have you heard anything regarding algae blooms here around Santa Cruz and the central coast? I haven't seen anything about it locally but down in socal last week it was the talk of the SB harbor.
On 4/28 there were articles in the local Santa Barbara news press and the LA times warning that shellfish and some finfish might be unsafe for consumption due to the buildup of domoic acid in their systems. The articles mentioned that the concentrations are primarily in the organs of finfish, but that the flesh may become contaminated (possiblly during cleaning if not directly from the fish's digestion-the papers were a little vague considering the fear they were pushing) . While I was down in SoCal last week I walked a local beach and counted over 20 dead birds, apparently a sign of domoic acid in the ecosystem.  Recently a  friend of mine here in SC mentioned that they got sick from eating local salmon and suspected the recent algae bloom.
Anyone out there got any info to contribute? With the opening of RF season and appearance of halibut sign around I'm ready to fish, but...

(I will mention that I ate some vermilion caught at the channel islands on 4/27 and suffered no ill effects. Fish was caught off a deep reef though, and the algae blooms have been only noticed near the immediate coastline).

General Talk / Fish Carcass disposal, tips?
« on: September 19, 2006, 10:03:08 AM »
I usually fish on weekends, and my curbside garbage pickup isn't until friday morning. So if i bag a carcass & toss it in the trash it has the better part of a week to , uh, age I guess is an appropriate term. I usually use a double paper bag to prevent spine puctures, and then double bag that in eco-plastic trash bags. Anyway, I'm sure my trash pickup guys still hate me during the summer.
How do the rest of ya'll get rid of carcasses? I could take 'em to the harbor cleaning station I guess, but in the summer it gets packed with tourists and if I fish north of SC its a royal pain to drive there..
Anyone got ideas? There are too many coyotes & raccoons at my place to bury the carcasses, so I'm not sure what to do. What I need is a fishy crematory I guess.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Davenport 9/17
« on: September 18, 2006, 09:24:20 AM »
Got a few hours out on the water Sunday. Nice conditions early but wind was building. Made a number of comfortable drifts N of the landing. Managed to scratch out a few decent size black RF on a rootbeer scampi, but released 'em. I was looking for something bigger. Eventually found one, and brought a 26", 6.5lb Ling into the net. Promptly broke off my only brown scampi on the next drop and then called it a day at 10:30am. Beautiful almost-fall day out there. Saw another fisherman in the parking lot with a rod & paddle but didn't run into them on the water.
Hit La Cabana on the westside for a steak super burrito lunch.
Life is good. :smt004

General Talk / Piscean artworks show scheduled for November 4th
« on: September 06, 2006, 11:01:40 AM »
It's official now! I'm having a small gallery show during November and December, featuring at least 12 all new pieces. Show will be at the White Raven Coffeehouse on hwy 9 in Felton. There will be an opening party on the afternoon of November 4th with snacks provided (but you gotta buy your own coffee).
My artwork is Pacific Northwest tribal style influenced, and I mostly use wooden panels with a combination of carving and painting. This time I tried some new things too, so come & check it out. All my designs are original, and are generally ocean/ fishing inspired. For this show I have created several traditional pieces, some polynesian inspired pieces, and some inspired by a recent trip to Costa Rica. I even decorated an old surfboard for it.
This is my first show since 2003, and it should be a good one. Come by & check it out. If you have questions or need directions, you can email me at pisceanartworks@hotmail.com.

-Sean

PS: as the date gets closer I'll post some teaser photos.

« on: July 10, 2006, 12:38:27 PM »
Not much action but fun time regardless. Took some in-laws out for the morning hoping for them to score on a nice ling or something, but all we could mange was a few nice sized black RF. We used various swimbaits in both dark & light colors & some iron. I did bring up a just barely legal cabezon, but released it because it was just to pretty to eat ( I gotta get a kayak digi camera). Only got about an hour on the water before the wind & swell became too much to deal with, although the fish were still hitting. If we'd had another hour I'll bet we'd have had our lingcod. Anyway we scraped a tasty fish taco dinner for 4 out of what we had caught, so who can complain?
Oh yeah, and talked to a surfer who told us a great story about a guy who mooched, I mean brought, in a 22lb halibut on his kayak last week in similary ugly conditions, right there at the landing. Hmmm, I thought, think I might know that guy he was talking about... :smt003
I'll probably try again next weekend somewhere, gotta keep up on the artistic research don' 'cha know. My November art show will have several new yak fishing inspired carvings.

General Talk / Piscean Artworks scores a gallery show November 06
« on: May 26, 2006, 10:51:43 AM »
Hey all,
I just scored a primo 3 month show slot at the White Raven coffee house in downtown Felton and wanted to post my stoke! Some of you may know I do wood plank carvings, mostly in a pacific northwest native inspired style. Well due to a bit of luck I am now slated for a three month show during the holiday season. This will be my second appearance at the 'Raven and I am totally stoked to do the show. I'm hoping to have about 12-14 new pieces, mostly marine related with our favorite central cali gamefish represented, some may even have fishing 'yaks integrated. I'm hoping to have a nice little opening reception probably on the first weekend of the show. If it's cool I'll post a reminder in about 5 months. I am totally stoked!
