I tip my hat
to the mighty rat

Just under $4ooo damage on my wife’s car and aaa will want to total it if any more bills. Good to know it falls into comprehensive. I tied a trap to the top of the battery and it disappeared…it was triggered and dragged way down into the bowels of the engine and no rat. I had to take out the whole battery case to get it out

So far only two squirrels and a bird have met their maker in the traps and can’t get no satisfaction of seeing a dead rat…yet

Good news is they’re finally munching the poison

Eddie you probably saw this coming

Just an opinion but not sure why anyone would want to start adding things to the topsides of a yak like this

The whole point of any yak like the stealth is…?

Just curiosity here the hatches look like they are fabric over frame? or glass?

I need to fabricate a new hatch for my mulderboard and looking for ideas

And when was that made?

Great advertisement for plastic vs glass

I’m a big fan of glass but not sure how crunchproof it’ll be in that situation

Santa Cruz sinus lavage this morning

Viz was about right for it

This one is so tempting Especially looking down the road when my boy runs off to college

I would need to lose a kayak or two out of three that are crowding up the backyard

Today at steamers I was thinking I need to carry a speargun out with me  The viz was incredible Was surprised to see a couple of kayaks out fishing

Neti pot Santa Cruz style

$50 seems like a killer price even if it needs tlc. The glass in those is a lot tougher than nowadays

That would be a very fast boat

Not sure it’s a light hall though re the nose doesn’t look swept up enough but can’t tell from the pics

Mine is about same vintage (1968ish) but 16’ and 45lbs and debating whether to rehab it or give it away

I’ll try the peanut Tally so far is two bushy tail rodents and one bird. Other traps are sprung but empty

Amazing how crafty these f’ers are

Good news is they were ignoring the poison bait under the hood but now it’s finally getting eaten

Maybe they should ban all halibut fishing except from kayaks

I haven't looked into this myself, but it seems Hilborn is fraught with controversy himself.
https://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2016/05/12/477827180/fisheries-scientist-becomes-latest-target-of-activist-s-records-requests

Ray Hilborn doesn’t seem prone to backing away from controversy. About funding I learned about that one from a journalist in 2010 or 11 so greenpeace wasn’t breaking any news, just a weak attempt at character assassination by ideologues, no attempt to challenge any of the science he’s done. Btw NPR put a link to his response in that article which is worth a read:

https://rayhblog.files.wordpress.com/2016/05/hilborn-response-to-greenpeace.pdf

Since Worm coauthored the paper w Hilborn in 2006 that discredited his original claim that global fish stocks would collapse by 2040 it seems like he should get equal billing w Hilborn as a “denier of overfishing” in the greenpeace complaint

Pretty conspicuous sin of omission there

There are some good collapsible nets out there that cost a little more but worth it imo Cant remember the brand i have but will look and report back

At least theres no hurry being there wont be a season

About gaffing salmon usually can tell before you even see the fish what it is But not always obvious even when you can see it

A little counterpoint and food for thought

First of three short talks by fisheries scientist Ray Hilborn

There are more recent discussions with him but the relevant parts are all there in that original series

There's a thing that unfolded roughly concurrent w the mlpa that's never got enough airtime

In science circles it was referred to as the Worm-Hilborn clash - basically Ray Hilborn called bullshit on Boris Worm's predictions of the apocalyptic collapse of world fish stocks by 2040(?) and proposed that they collaborate on a study/assessment of global fish stocks

Conclusions of the study that resulted were dramatically less pessimistic than Worm's original claims. One locally relevant one was that California was amongst the three best managed fisheries in the world(conclusion reached pre-MLPA)

Makes for a note of irony that Worm's name is at the top of the study that debunked his own claims

But even if that original claim is no longer mentioned explicitly by the sylvia earle ted danson jp club the mood remains. During the mlpa i spoke with numerous people on the pro mlpa side and never had the impression it even mattered to them (Likewise studies on existing mpas around the world that showed lackluster ecosystem benefits and catastrophic impacts on local economies)

Whatever effect it had on Worm's reputation i doubt his career suffered any for it

Same cant be said for the careers of many others
