Bought new six months ago, used about four times. No box, works great. $380 obo. Located in Pacifica CA

Ended up going out with the plan of being cautious (first hint of big gusts, coming back in). Had my eye on the turning hour according to Windy (11AM) with the plan to be close to the harbor by then. I stayed out until 11:30, and it seemed to be getting a little more windy, but overall, it was not bad at all... an occasional 15mph gust every couple minutes it seemed. It was a nice beautiful morning out in PP, but the only fish biting for me were small croaker (hooked about six). Loads of fun for me... these were my first hookup while kayak fishing! I only went about half a mile out between the jaws and the green buoy... taking it easy as I learn.

To me, it seems the GFS forecast was more accurate predicting the conditions today for pillar point than ECMWF (I think the default for windy.com). Definitely going to get in the habit of looking up several different forecasts in the future.

Happy to say I had a great 4th of July weekend -- my 2020 Outback went on it's maiden voyage and practiced self-rescue in Pillar Point (and even got some fishing in)!

I convinced my fiance to come to join me. She wasn't too thrilled with the idea initially, so she bartered with me. Deal ended up being I get her a $140 inflatable Craigslist special yak and tow her around the harbor in exchange for a set of eyes in self-rescue. So, in effect, I became the most expensive tug-boat yak out in the water for the weekend.

But it was all worth it. I rolled off my kayak, re-entered, flipped, re-entered, rinse and repeat. All in all, I didn't think it was so bad inside the harbor... I'm sure it's a different ballpark in swells. My go-to for righting the Outback usually consisted of me grabbing the pedal fins to hoist myself, then grabbing the side of the yak and rolling. I learned a LOT when re-entering. I know what gear gets in the way on the geartrack now, and will reposition accordingly. Once the clip/sheath on my PFD knife got caught in the Hobie chair, and that was a hassle getting un-hooked... but another lesson.

Overall, I think kayak fishing is AWESOME. I can't wait for the next weekend to get out there and past PP's jaws to hook up with some real fish.

New to kayak fishing and picked up a gaff. Is it particularly difficult to gaff a halibut? I've seen quite a few threads where people prefer a kage.

Picked up a new 2020 Outback and rigging it up for its first outing. Following guidance from NCKA, I was planning on putting some pool floaties in the hull for safety, but then I noticed this:



At least in the new Outbacks, they put in a couple foam blocks underneath the seat. Hard to tell how long they are. Just wondering if these are sufficient as a substitute for pool floaties, or if I should add some pool floaties anyway.
