The "Hypersmooth 2.0" image stabilization added to the Hero 8 and Hero 9 is worth the added cost.  I have a Hero 7 Black and a Hero 8 Black and the difference is significant.  The Hero 9 claims to have better battery life but I haven't seen hard data on that.  The Hero 9 also has directionally better image stabilization - just a pinch better but not a quantum leap like the Hero 8 introduced.

The Hero 9 added a front-facing LCD screen, 5K video resolution, and a 20MP sensor.  I'd think the front-facing screen would make it easier to know if the camera is pointed where I want it on the kayak and to make sure it's back in position if I moved it for a special shot, but other than that, eh.

A downside the 8 and the 9 present for kayakers is they don't require a frame, like the 7 and earlier models, and that makes it tricky to figure out how to tether the camera.  The upside to the lack of frame is it makes it much easier to change batteries or SDHC cards on the water or in the field.

There were a large number of videography features added to the Hero 8 Black that make it superior to the Hero 7 Black.

The Hero 7 Black is still a great action camera; the Hero 8 is just better.  Occasionally GoPro offers a great sale.  I got my Hero 8 Black for cheap when they accepted any old digital camera in a "trade-up" program.  Watch their website.  Right now you can buy the Hero 8 Black for $279

Interesting....how far offshore would they have rescued this guy?  What happens if he needs rescue in the middle of the pacific, would CG coordinate with ships in the vicinity or is he on his own?

They're the Coast Guard, not the Mid-Ocean Guard.  The scenario you're describing would be all the U.S. Navy and the navies of various countries.  Yes, the Coast Guard might launch a C-130 for SAR.  But the Jayhawk helicopters have an effective range of about 400 miles, and cutters don't carry a helicopter of their own.  If the helo could reach a cutter, the cutter would be much too far from the scene to be of any use.

I flew USCG helicopters out of CGAS San Francisco.  We would eliminate one crewman, strip every non-essential scrap of gear, including some radios, and remove all of the insulation allow for extra fuel to extend our range, but there were still emergencies to which we could not respond because they were too far out and there was rarely a cutter with a flight deck in the area.  I can remember only three times we staged on a cutter out of  700+ SAR flights in which I participated.

The Jayhawk is far more advanced than the helicopters I flew, but still, they aren't going out all that far.  They have to have enough fuel to hover on station for the rescue and then return to base.

The Hobie system works, but it's a butt-pain if you're doing it alone.  I'd try the hot - very hot - water and some weight first.

Just throwing out another option. I built this from an old trolling motor yesterday. It only took about 2 hours. It’s an Oldschool Minnkota though…no spotlock haha. The battery is the heaviest part (fortunately I scored a 12v 100ah lithium for free…otherwise I’d be using a 60+ lb group 24 deep cycle 12v battery from my aluminum boat’s trolling motor ha!)

A few years back, this was a somewhat popular mod for Hobies.  Should still be a few "How To" videos on YouTube.  Maybe it didn't catch on widely back then because of the weight of a standard deep cycle battery?  It's still a neat option.  Good work.

I just spray all of my electrical connections with Corrosion-X every couple of months. It stays on the connections for quite awhile.

In my limited experience with Corrosion-X (just started using it last year) it seems to work better on electrical connections than dielectric grease.  When I go out in the salt, I use compressed air to blow the plugs and sockets dry, then spray them.

I'm never in favor of suggesting higher-end gear for beginners - and even mid-range gear gets expensive.  You don't yet know if you're going to like fly-fishing, so get into it as cheaply as you can, then upgrade later.

The Echo Base series of rods are a great option.  I've cast several of them and, at $99, they perform WAY above their price point.  Any reel will do.  If you don't get one with a sealed drag (some of the "sealed drag" reels aren't 100% sealed) you'll simply need to rinse it thoroughly and maintain it carefully, and if you do, they'll last long enough.

In general, spend your cash on the best fly line(s) you can afford, then on a rod that suits you while you learn, and then on the reel, in that order, and you can't go wrong.

Caddis Fly Shop in Eugene, OR has those Echo Base rods on sale for $79 right now.  (I have nothing to do with the shop other than tossing too much money at them every year for fly-tying materials.)

Rack it right side up then flip it.

This!  I own two of them and it's the only way to get them up on a rack with minimal cussing.

You don't need a deep "V" cart because you'll want the cart strap(s) somewhere near the seat to keep the cart from sliding off the stern. There's minimal keel in that area.

There are lots of videos on YouTube about "repairing" an oil-canned hull.  I was hunting for an old one posted by Hobie about fixing a deep dent that was slick and quick if it works anywhere nearly as good on an Ocean Kayak, but alas, I couldn't find it again.

   Another vote for the outback. Lighter easier to launch and transport. And plenty stable. My buddy bought a PA14 360 and it is a beast of a Kayak and takes about twice the effort to move anywhere.

That’s good to know about the PA 14 feedback.  Yeah, when I’m loading and unloading, most of the time, it’ll be just myself.  So Outback being will be a benefit.

What hasn't been discussed is righting a PA should it flip.  I followed a fellow to shore who was swimming behind and pushing his upside-down PA14, because, as he explained "I can't flip it over if I'm not standing on the bottom..." and he wasn't a little guy.  Gig Harbor Fly Shop - a Hobie dealer - had a video online of their struggles to right a flipped PA - it took quite a while.

(Yes, I offered to tow him and his boat back to the beach but he declined.)

Tailgate down, my truck is a little bit shorter - just enough to make the T-13 "tippy", loaded either bow first or stern first, upside down or right-side-up.  RATS!  I'd rather be able to toss it in and strap it down than store a bed extender (like I don't already have enough crap in the garage?) but testing that failed with both my T-13 and a Hobie Revo 13.

(It worked perfectly with a T-11, but like an idiot, I sold that boat).

I bought one off amazon a while back and ended up selling it a week later.  The issue is with small truck low to the ground, the thing would catch every speed bump (My 95 Tacoma sits low as it s stock, the extender only made it worse).  The one I bought was straight, no upward bend in it.   Avoid them if you can, I think even on full size trucks they would be an issue.

My truck probably sits a bit higher than your Tacoma, but why take a chance just to save a few pennies?  Good advice.  Thanks.
