Hobie Kayaks / 2021 OB cracked hull
« on: April 07, 2022, 12:02:53 PM »
While cleaning my boat for some upcoming trips I discovered a large running crack in my hull. The crack is at the under the right hand cup holder. I’ve already contacted my Hobie dealer to initiate a warranty claim and am hopeful that they’ll do what I’ve sen them do for others and give me a replacement hull. Over 2021 I took her out on 150+’ish trips, so it was well used. I am a little bit bummed that I’m having to cancel some trips right now, just as the bite is starting to rip. Hoping Hobie comes through and comes through quickly.

What are your experiences with cracked Hobie hulls and warranty claims? Help me feel better.

Cheers

Wife has mandated I clean up and get rid of stuff I dont need/use. I present to the fine folks of NCKA, my first crate, an ‘09 original creation, full of Scotty and RAM products, rod holders as well as misc items. I’ve switched my rigging to other brands and no longer need these. The price is FREE, with the catch that the entire crate needs to go. Willing to deliver within 10’ish miles of Alameda, but prefer you pickup if possible. No shipping tho.

Hoping this will help someone rig up, get out, and get bit.

What’s in the crate:

1. scotty rod holder w/ 10” extension & slip discs (2)
2. scotty cup holder
3. cannon rod holder
4. yakattack ram zookatube (2)
5. scotty rod holder w/ slip disc
6. ram rod holder 2007

Hobie Kayaks / Another 180 drive warranty claim.
« on: December 11, 2021, 12:52:31 PM »
After 125 or so trips this year, the Mirage drive gave out. I just dropped it off at Wind Toys up in Santa Rosa for warranty. Evidently the spine needs to be replaced because the bearings are shot. With the storms coming, I’m hoping for 2 week turnaround.

Posting mostly to serve as another marker for 180 drive issues. Even though mine was well maintained, it still broke down after extensive use. Not sure if Hobie banks on less usage or prioritizing cost savings over more robust engineering. But it does seem these drives are not built for punishment, even if well maintained. I wish the drive was built tougher, especially considering the cost.

I’m somewhat disappointed that it did not last a full year. Bought a 2020 OB 12/30/20, and she almost made it.

I am quite happy that Billy up at Wind Toys knows whats up and is on top of the game.

I’ll follow up with the resolution later on.

General Fishing Tips / Harvesting bass,....
« on: February 13, 2021, 10:33:00 AM »
I ‘m aware folks can keep 2 15+“ bass a day, but I kind have a problem keeping any when other fish are available, and taste better anyway. I was taught to not take them when I was a youngster, by my dad. So check me on this video, which appears like it is recently published:

At 4:10, I see 2 bass on the stringer when he puts on a third, along w some crappie. I have no idea if dude was culling (and why of no tournament?) or if he released them later. But sure looks to me like dude was keeping too may. And for me, altho legal, more than zero is being an asshole - unless fish has been mortally wounded (and is over 15”).

What do you all think about the bass treatment here? Is the youtuber YPV Adventures on here? I’m curious to check my bass bias here. Thanks.

General Talk / Low water and long ramps - what do you do?
« on: February 04, 2021, 11:11:41 PM »
With the water in most lakes at their lowest, I’m curious to know how you handle loading up your yak at the bottom of a long boat ramp.

If no one else is using the ramp I tend to just park perpendicular to the water, and kinda awkwardly plop the boat into the bed of my truck with bed extender, loosely secure it and then drive up to the top to unload/pack.

But what about a narrow little ramp like Capell up at Berryessa? The water is wwwwway down, making for a super long and steep one lane narrow ramp. I’d really like to launch out of Capell,...but that ramp. Is it just a no go situation, or are there some techniques y’all use to negotiate problematic ramps?

For Sale / Sold! Jackson Cuda 12 with fish finder & paddle - $500
« on: January 15, 2021, 06:49:38 PM »
I’m selling my 2012 Jackson Cuda 12 with rudder, that I bought way back from Headwaters in Lodi. With it I’m including a Lowrance Elite 4 fish finder and an extra Werner paddle I have lying around.

The boat is in great condition and clean. I’ll attach a few pictures here, and post more if you want. I am in Alameda and can put the boat in the driveway for anyone that would like to check it out and answer any questions you might have from an acceptable social distance. Hit me up with a message if you’re interested.

$500 for everything.

General Fishing Tips / Sportsman’s Warehouse,...when am I going to learn?
« on: December 19, 2020, 07:20:22 PM »
<gripe post>

Hey y’all, just a heads up, check your gear when you purchase/pick up, before you walk away, especially at biggun retailers like Sportsman’s Warehouse.

Sportsman’s Warehouse in Brentwood sold me an open floor model Lowrance Reveal 7, without telling me, and charged me full price. I happened to have a discount (not floor model discount tho!) and is why I bought it there,...but dam,...what the hell? Selling an expensive piece of electronics, a used one, without telling the customer?

I contacted the store and they will refund me in full. The fishing floor manager told me it was store policy to just sell whatever,...it all goes, even if it’s used, scratched, mucked up, with who knows what missing. The transducer has a huge deep scratch in it too. I’ve had bad experiences with these types of stores before,...when the fuck am I gonna wise up?

Now I’ve gotta drive my ass all the way back out there,...figure I’ll go soak some dough at Contra Loma while I’m out there,....but dam.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Seat back hydration
« on: December 13, 2020, 05:59:21 PM »
Curious to know if folks have used hydration packs (camelbacks etc) on their yaks. I’m in the planning stage in anticipation of purchasing a Hobie Outback soon, and was thinking of using a seat back cooler similar to what Perception Kayak sells (photo attached). I’ve googled it and found some folks in Texas placing hydration packs inside the hull due to the fact TX is balls ass hot. I’m thinking a seat back cooler would suffice. What say collective hive mind?

Also, I will be selling my Jackson Cuda 12 shortly to make room for my battleship.

Hope everyone is well and coping. Planning this boat and researching fishing stuff is helping my mental health out tremendously,....so thank you all.

Peace

Kayaks / Pedal power folks, need help picking a new yak.
« on: November 30, 2020, 11:56:18 AM »
The time has come for me to adopt the ways of the pedal power. Over the years I have really enjoyed my OK Trident 13 and my beloved Jackson Cuda 12. But as the years pile on and my back and joints age, I'm having issues on the water reaching things from a seated position.

I've found that my preference is cruising local, Gold Country and mountain lakes, trolling for trouts. A side passion is bass fishing. I have no desire to venture out into the salt - my fear of that big ass body of unrelenting salted water freaks me out, and I know better than to tempt fate - and mostly I just really enjoy inland lakes.
My dream boat appears to be a Hobie PA 12, but that price tag,...I'm not really sure I can get that past the household budget commander, even with selling off my current fleet. Other contenders from my research appear to be the Native Titan 12 and Wilderness System Recon 120 HD. I'm looking for stability, comfort and a good reliable drive system.

I'll be taking a trip up to Kayak City sometime soon to see a bunch of these boats (after watching a video posted by Headwaters,...hella bummed that shop is no longer,...it's where I got my Cuda way back in the days). I was hoping some of you pedal power folks might have some input regarding these 3 boats, or others that I've not keyed in on yet. I know there's a huge demand for new boats now, so time isn't really an issue.

Whatever advice y'all have is greatly appreciated.

Cheers

For Sale / Scotty #253 gimbal mount rod holder - pair
« on: November 18, 2020, 12:22:02 PM »
Winter cleaning of stuff I don’t use anymore surfaced these two Scotty #253 gimbal mount rod holders. I have no need for them, and if someone wants em, just pay for shipping cost (USPS flat rate) and they’re yours. Or pick up if you’re local to Alameda.

For Sale / Talic 3 kayak wood stand - hella cheap
« on: February 22, 2017, 11:26:03 AM »
Hey all,

I'm clearing out my garage and getting rid of my Talic 3 kayak wood stand.  It is solid, undamaged and ready to harbor your yaks.  Only getting rid of it because I built my own down by the waters edge and no longer have need for a garaged solution.  My wife is making me get rid of it fast, so I'm looking at $100 for the whole thing, obo.  My wife's anger can be your fortune.

I am in Alameda but happy to bring it to you so long as you're relatively near.

Thanks and tight lines,

Rob, aka Fishgr (been outta the game for a while with a back injury, just getting back on board!)
