General Talk / Hobie Revo daggerboard
« on: May 22, 2021, 07:20:27 AM »
Does the daggerboard make that much of a difference in terms of stability? also speed. Does it slow you down and by how much? Looking for advice from someone who has it. My 16 is a bit on the wobbly side but I am coming from a 32" wide kayak and need to spend more time on it. Just looking at ways to stabilize. I dont want the blow up AMAs. Thanks

General Talk / halibut / salmon rod
« on: May 19, 2021, 03:01:40 PM »
I am looking for a rod I can use for both halibut and salmon. My buddy just gave me a nicer yard sale reel and I want to pair it with a decent rod. I already mix and match all my gear as it saves me money and I truly dont think the fish care. Any suggestions on a good halibut rod that could also be used for sammys? Ideally under $100, but i'd spend up to $200 if it seems really worth it. THanks

I texted john the night before with a picture of my salmon net asking "should I bring this?". I knew he already had a net but he then responds with yes definitely what if we hook into a double. Well... we hooked into a triple. It was absolute madness. If we didnt have that second net I dont think we would of landed all three fish. We launched morro bay and the original plan was to fish somewhat inbetween morro and port slo but I heard word that the bite was on fire out of port slo so we decided to keep moving south. We had a terrible start to the day. One guy showed up late and hungover. It was the first time using brand new $800 a piece downriggers. Both down riggers were wired wrong and letting line out instead of bringing line in. So we had to rewire both plugs there on the boat offshore. I dropped my sunglasses in the water. I mean everything was not going our way. And then boom. Triple hook up and we put all three fish in the boat. We caught two more sammys throughout the morning and were headed in by 12. From talking to other friends on the water I believe this to be one of the best Salmon Openers in 10 years. People were killing it! I have posted a link to a video from that glorious morning that I just uploaded on my youtube channel. I honestly cant stop thinking about this and had to share. I got Sammys on my mind!!!

General Talk / Hobie AI pontoons
« on: February 16, 2021, 02:33:17 PM »
I am going to convert my revolution to a partial AI. I am looking for where I can buy the hobie pontoon that comes with hobie AIs. I am pretty sure along the way I saw a website that sells that individual piece. Option B is to build my own pontoon. Option C is to find one on craigslist or get lucky at a yard sell. But I want to build a pontoon off one side of my revolution with the trampoline tarp in-between me and the pontoon. Can anyone point me in the right direction to get this pontoon please? If I found just the pontoon itself that would be enough. I have access to a shop at work and was planning to fabricate a custom setup. Some type of aluminum welded deal. Also can anyone give me some idea of how much having the one pontoon off the side affects speed? I can get up to 7mph on glass water fully loaded with gear. In the ocean more like 5-6mph. Thanks,

General Talk / Kayak cushion
« on: January 16, 2021, 09:50:50 AM »
Any recommendations? I currently have some health issues that are making sitting down pretty painful. I am thinking about spring and kayak fishing and that will probably only make my condition worse. Looking for a good cushion I can sit on for my hobie revo 16

Hobie Kayaks / Hobie revo 2020
« on: December 01, 2020, 03:10:29 PM »
The biggest factor on why I decided to pull the trigger on the revo 16 was that they were discontinuing the model in 2021. I am extremely glad I made that decision. I just want to say that the hobie 16 is a beast of a kayak. I absolutely love it so far

Kayak Diving and Spearfishing / New to freediving
« on: November 12, 2020, 12:31:27 PM »
Any advice? 2021 I want to start my free diving career. Plenty of spots I already slay fish down here on central coast in kayak. I have a bay boat too that would be perfect to access local spots. My biggest concern is visibility and seeing a white shark. I had an encounter last year in the kayak that scared the shit out of me. Couldn't image what that would feel like underwater. I assume to free dive one has to shut off all emotion and be fearless. Complete control and that is something that definitely interests me. I grew up a swimmer and am very strong in the water but plan to train pretty good before first couple dives. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

General Talk / Kayak transportation question
« on: October 14, 2020, 02:58:47 PM »
How do you guys haul your 16 ft kayaks around? I have a bed extender hitch that works for now, but the kayak is hanging off a good 5-6ft. I plan to built a rack on my camper shell and mount it up there. Would a rack spaced at 5ft apart be enough to have a 16ft hobie revo on the roof of my camper? Thanks,

General Talk / went swimming
« on: October 07, 2020, 01:59:33 PM »
First trip in the brand new hobie revo 2020. Dropped the drive into the surf during the launch. Immediately went head first in after it, luckily saved it. Got through the swell and things seemed alright. I use a bucket to fill my live well because it is all homemade. As I was filling the live well I leaned just a little to far over. It was either hold on to the kayak and flip the whole thing, or let go and only I go into the water. I let go and took a dump. Thankfully, didn't lose any gear. Good way to practice self rescue... The kayak hauls ass and I was hooked up twice on halibut but couldn't seal the deal. Going to have to take a few trips to get use to the balance and how far I can lean over. I am coming from a 33" wide kayak to a 27" one.. Overall a good test run. I am fishing Santa Barbara county so the water is still warm and I wasn't shivering too bad.

General Talk / Hobie drive maintenance
« on: October 01, 2020, 10:18:44 AM »
Just got my brand spankin new hobie with the drive. What do you guys do as far as maintenance on the drive? I just watched a youtube video of how to completely take it apart and clean which is very interesting. I fish 30-40 trips a year and a lot of saltwater. I'm thinking to maybe take apart at the end of each season and re-grease everything. Anyone spray it down with WD-40 every trip to avoid corrosion? Let me know what you guys do. Thanks

Fish Talk / Fall Halibut
« on: September 29, 2020, 11:15:44 AM »
How deep? I have been catching them all year from 45-60ft. The last two trips its only been sharks. I have noticed some guys landing fish deeper. Do the fish move a little deeper in fall and then obviously winter? I was planning to go troll 80ft this weekend and see what happens.

General Talk / Fish finders
« on: September 28, 2020, 11:01:37 AM »
I need more kayak advice. Just bought the revo 16. My last kayak I used a garmin striker 4 as my primary fish finder. This worked wonders and lasted right about 3 years and costs $100. It is finally starting to poop out. My thought process is that since I am already spending big money on a brand new kayak, I have thoughts to get the next tier up of fish finder which is a garmin striker 5. The garmin striker 5 is $300. I can't wrap my head around taking that $300 fishfinder into elements as harsh as the ocean. In my mind, It would only be a matter of time to where that thing will get ruined. Is it worth it? For the guys that run more expensive fishfinders, How do you keep it safe from saltwater corrosion? Is there some type of after market plugs you can install to the back of the fish finder that helps prevent all of this? The only time I have found myself vulnerable is during surf launches and landings (which I do a lot of). If you are launching from a boat ramp or lake shore, keeping it clean and dry is totally feasible. But If you take a wave off the chest on a launch and your ff gets hit, how is the best way to keep it safe. Pretty much all my fishing is in the ocean. I am basically torn between getting a new garmin striker 4 ($100) or upgrading and getting the garmin striker 5 ($300). thanks guys
