Fishing Tournaments and Events / Re: MBK Fishing Derby!
« on: September 16, 2021, 08:03:39 PM »
Derby newb question since I've never attended one of these (or any sort of derby) at all in the past....

what happens if conditions aren't really suitable for kayak fishing? Like big swells and high winds - or is MBK are well protected enough that that sort of thing is rare?

Bring something to throw for perch and such in the surf!

There is good perch fishing walking north till you hit some good surf. Stripers are also starting to show.

Ocean conditions should be more than manageable this time of year.

Nice ride. Love me some aluminum boats. Been through a lot of different ones over the decades. Geez ! Did i say decades ?  :smt001

Love that live bait tank. I am actually on a project to install one on a newly acquired 17foot center console as well as an upgrade to a newer 50 hp 4 stroke. These boats are gonna be the death of me. lol

Heres a pick of a boat launch at a very dangerous cove.

Thanks for the pic of the live well. Just threw out the plans on the mickey mouse one i was planning. Great. Back to the drawing board.  :smt005

Cool old picture they're from the past almost forgot about the bell bottom era. I guess you could keep green sturgeon back then did you eat it and how did it taste?
 :smt001

Definitely cant keep a green sturgeon now a days. One of the best tasting fish i have ever eaten. I remember the flesh being pink like pork and firm.

Great thread for the possible use in the future. Haven't felt the need to use my SS as of late. I do charge it when not in use for a long period of time.  Seems like its that time of year again.

Guessing he is fairly new to SWS. There have been multiple sightings as well as attacks at that location.

Alex

Yeah, I saw one there several years ago, and I see them regularly here in SC - still a sobering reminder of where we fish.

Made me think of the time a GWS was chewing on that small skiff near Capitola a few yrs back. Was posted on there website.

It was several yrs back when the juvenile GWS were congregating near the cement ship. Someone out of the Watsonville airport was offering helicopter rides to the cement ship for several minutes to get a great aerial view of them. 99 bucks for three people. Couldn't get anyone to go with me.  Would have been worth the hunskie just to experience it.

Not sure if this was brought up already? Found it looking for sport Dungeness crab regs.

Interesting read about new regs for commercial crabbing.  .

General Talk / Throw back thursday

Throwing it way back. Mid 70's.

Wasn't from a kayak but what a thrill it was.

Was fishing from the shore on the south side of the mouth of the klamath river. The breaker waves were filled with either grunion or small smelt. Like black clouds scattered up and down the beach.

The redtail perch were on fire. So I launched a cast on my trusty 12 foot surf pole in hopes of catching an even bigger perch than i had already been catching.

My line starts peeling and is staying on the bottom. My first thought is a ray. As i lay some drag on to him my line starts raising two breakers back.

I start yelling out its gonna jump. 😆 By now a few people are watching as this beauty comes out of the water and starts to roll. All i can think is that its gonna wrap my line around those large diamond plates and hes gonna be a goner. After what seemed an eternity i landed it with the help of my Dad.

One of many great memories shared with my Dad who introduced me to the sport of fishing.

Good luck with the search for a new kayak Al.

Man do i miss my old ocean scrambler. Lightweight, great load capacity and a ruder to boot. Wasn't fast but definitely a work horse.  Don't think it would have taken much for a GWS bite to send it under though. Definitely a pool noodle yak.
